Open Thread: Game 37 - A's at Rays
Oakland Athletics at Tampa Bay Rays, May 20, 2009 4:08 PM PDT
The A's take the field tonight coming off one of their best wins of the year. Last night, they combined absolutely superb pitching with one very timely hit, and they became the team we always envy; the one who takes advantage of gifts given, and just simply plays well.
The A's line up the righties against LHP Scott Kazmir tonight, as they replace Buck and Sweeney with Davis and Cunningham. On the other side of the mound, they will throw Brett Anderson, who will try to even come close to Josh Outman's sparkling performance yesterday. Anderson would be best served to forget all about his last start, where he received zero support from the team; defensive or otherwise. They owe him a great night.
Maybe they just needed to see how a great win felt. Maybe they can repeat tonight. Expect a long one; Kazmir is not known for economical pitch counts.
Your lineups:
LET'S GO OAK-LAND!

Time to make it two in a row!
No watching for me tonight, so let’s make this first hour extra super good!
Nico: Okay. We have twelve hours to make a really big pickle.
Just got back from Angels and Demons.
Yowzers, I’m surprised Dan Brown didn’t step in and stop filming.
They radically changed the ending of the film.
I won’t ruin it for those that still haven’t seen it, but yeah I wasn’t too impressed.
Books and films *should* be different
It’s a radically different medium, it only makes sense that the story would change accordingly.
But then again, that’s why I don’t watch many movies. I’m just not a film type of guy.

Blister, bad luck, had to look at our putrd offense in dugout for first 4 starts and puked
I said this before - I wouldn't be a bit surprised

His main problem was giving up way too many home runs. But for 6.00 ERA some respectable stats.

no, Kazmir's either really good or really bad.
He’s not AS MUCH a head case as Sean Gallagher, but he is clearly a head case. Regardless of whether this inept offense can get to him or not is another question, but we got the bad Kazmir tonight. Three hits and two walks already.

Bad joke from the radio
Would you rather Outman or Balfour as a last name for your pitcher?

I'm reading Ball Four right now!
well, not this second, obviously, but a fun read written by Jim Bouton.
Considering it was written in… what, 1968-69, I find it very interesting to see what is written about greenies in there.

he can’t possibly hit into a double play right? right?!?!
I don't think he can hit it hard enough to line out and have a man caught on base,
though I wouldn’t rule out Crosby getting tagged out at the plate on a sac fly…
Yay Cunningham!
Yikes, are there no appropriate nicknames for that last name.

HAHA that Haren trade was a great one for us
got solid 6 players and they all could be playing in oakland soon except CarGon
Rays did bad...
As pointed out by Ray Fosse on the TV broadcast, Kazmir had been getting Cunningham out on fastballs. Cunningham could not get around on the fastball. By throwing him a slider, he “speeds up the hitter’s bat”. So, instead of advantage Kazmir, he lets Cunningham get around on a pitch, and he hit it well.

Hey guys
Nice poke by Cunningham. Can’t say I’ve ever been prouder of Croz after watching him hit the ball over to move the runner. This guy be a late bloomer from a mental standpoint. He’s always been “the” guy especially having Ed as a father but he’s looking smarter everyday.
Of course the average could improve.
