DLD 5/20/09
So no one else will do it? We need another call-up from AAA to start a DLD? Guess I will have to do. Where have you gone Joe? Speaking of, the Red Sox version of the song passed away last week. He's one of the other two DiMaggio's that played MLB, and by all accounts Dominic was a great guy.
Here's a woman my wife would appreciate. After 23 years of glorious bliss she too has never forgotten a damn thing I've done wrong. Poor old guy, just when you think you've covered your tracks, karma comes along to remind you that she truly is a bitch.
And just because I hate these guys, here's a chance to make a little cash and give someone exactly what they've got coming.
For those of you who post regularly about TV programming, I offer you this. Seems we don't have the only Tyler with a blog.
For those of you who are wondering, why yes, this is indeed my first attempt at a DLD. I can't stand living in the past, so here ya go. I got nuttin.

That link to Dom DiMaggio was for you.
He was one of Ted Williams crew back in the day. He was also a central figure in the book, “Teammates” by Halberstram.

they should still DL him
no need to go w/o a backup catcher. DL him, call up Wrecker or Gal Rraga, and then send down Powell if the one up fails. Or, if they are good enough, say put Gallarraga at 1B.

It was just temporary because of some posters being a little banged up and tweaked.
It’s not that we don’t think you’re ready yet, but we’ve got some other guys who have been here longer and we have to figure out what they’re doing before we can think about keeping you on full time.

I don’t think alox would net us a front page level prospect out of their system (no need really, with 67M’s strong rookie year), but we could use a strong statistician to fill the gap left by PT. I say trade alox for a stat-head.

Keith Foulke: Douchebag.
According to the Boston Globe, 36-year-old reliever Keith Foulke is hoping to make it back to the major leagues.
Foulke is currently pitching for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. “Any big league city is better than being here,” he said Tuesday. “I’d even play for the Yankees. I still think I have something to offer.” Foulke posted a 4.06 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 23/13 K/BB ratio with the A’s in 2008, but wasn’t offered a contract by a single MLB club this winter.
No, Keith, you throw 75 mph and you suck. Shut up and go away.

by stormtown on May 20, 2009 11:14 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I really don't understand
how TV blackouts are beneficial to the owners. It’s an archaic system whose time has come. Why on earth would you try to actively hide your product from viewers? TV has changed drastically since they days when blackouts made economic sense. Today, all they do is frustrate would be fans and alienate current ones. Besides which, technology is rapidly approaching the point where blackouts are damn near impossible to impose.

It has to do with Advertising Revenue. They can claim that their TV Market holds X Million viewers
even if those viewers can’t actually watch the game.

you don't understand
The “TV Market” you control is what you define to your advertisers (and base your rates on) as the market area that the product will be shown to. It doesn’t matter if they can actually see the game or not.
It is a flawed system, and needs to be fixed. I am just telling you why they exist in that form in the first place. Really, it is a holdover from when games were first televised.

The most frightening baseball video. Ever.
Via Shysterball, Jim Caple writes about the 86 Dodgers. I’ll echo Craig’s recommendation – watch the YouTube video before you read the article. Bonus challenge: watch the whole thing.
Also, I too want to be a scientist.

AJ Hinch update from the last great hope of print media
The New York Times included an insightful piece yesterday about the only MLB manager with no coaching experience.
I remember thinking Hinch was an amazing prospect from the woeful ’98 squad ’caus he hit 9 home runs as a catcher. It was the first year I really paid attention to baseball and I had yet to learn that tons of catchers can hit for power while never walking of hitting for average.

The A's just moved Ellis to the 60 day DL
(meaning the earliest he can be reactivated is late June).
They did this in order to put Twins’ lefty reliever Craig Beslow — who the A’s just picked up — on the 40 man roster. No word yet, says Slusser, on who will be removed from the 25 man roster in order to bring Breslow to the club (unless he’s going to Sacramento?)

Breslow’s fastball tops out at 91 mph, but generally sits in high 80s, and he has added a cut fastball. He also has a plus overhand curveball (60–65 MPH), an average to above-average changeup, and a 78 MPH slider/slurve

But Breslow has a degree in molecular physics from Yale and is contemplating going to medical school when his baseball career is over, so at the very least, he must have good study habits and will probably get the clubhouse subscription to the New York Times reactivated.

according to the A's Ellis suffered a Grade 2 calf strain
here’s some info from a sports medicine website:
Grade 2 Calf Strain : There is partial tearing of muscle fibers. Full recovery takes approximately 5-8 weeks.
Ellis tore his calf muscle at the end of April. Even if it heals quickly he’ll still need some time to build up strength and flexibility in his legs. So it’s really not unreasonable for the A’s to decide to transfer him to the 60 Day DL.
