Charity, Anyone?

In the wake of Nick Adenhart's death, we talked about creating a forum for those in the AN community who wished to do something to help. At the time, we agreed to put those thoughts on hold to see if a charity might emerge requested by the Adenhart family, or the Angels, and it appears that one has emerged this week.

Kurt Suzuki has started a charity dedicated to helping his college teammate, Jon Wilhite - the only survivor in Adenhart's car - with the medical bills it will take to help Wilhite recover as best he can. Would AN like to make a collective donation to this fund as its way of doing something in response to the April 9th tragedy?

If so, the emphasis would be on participation, not dollar amount. Not everyone could make a substantial donation, even if they wanted to, and that's fine. 100 $5.00 donations would go just as far as one $500.00 donation. But everyone who wanted to could participate and as a blogfather I would be proud to be able to forward the results of strong participation, whatever the dollar amount might be.

Is this something you would like to see happen, and would like to participate in? I just thought I'd put it out there for discussion and feedback.

paypal will charge a fee for each payment received. why not use billpay?

youre looking at losing 3% plus a flat fee per donation if u go with paypal

Yeah, if someone knows a way to keep 100% of the donation

it would be great. I don’t use any of those services so I really don’t know what the options are. We could also have checks mailed to a central place and then just send on a ton of checks. I don’t care – whatever people like, whatever works.

I'm old school. I'd rather mail a check.

"Check is in the mail"

Now where have I heard that before?

A big envelope full of checks

from AN would make a nice statement. We could write our checks to the Jon Willhite Recovery Fund as directed in the MLB article, and Nico could accumulate them for us and maybe find an opportune moment to present the stack to Suzuki. I think it’s a great idea.

Sounds good - I'll put up a post soon

with info about how to mail checks. I’ll collect them and send them on in one swell foop.

Health care costs would be covered by car insurance in this case, I think

Regular health insurance won’t cover costs associated with car accidents (which are covered by the injury coverage in a car insurance plan) or with workplace injuries (which are covered by worker’s comp). Even if Wilhite has insurance, the costs for his care would be covered by Adenhart’s car insurance company, up to whatever limit was in the policy he bought.

Check works for me too

Maybe we can “pass the cap” at AN Day as well. Thanks Nico, for the suggestion.

My two cents.

Make your checks payable to the Jon Wilhite Recovery Fund, account 3980643658. Whoever banks at Wells collects them and deposits them their local branch.

Honestly, I was hoping for more than two cents,

but at least you’re participating.

I'm in

Are we still sending the checks to one central location to be collected under AN?

I think that's the way we'll go

I’ll put up a separate, front page fanpost soon with info.
