Open Thread: Game 21 - A's and Mariners Chez Nico
Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners, May 2, 2009 6:10 PM PDT
Oh yeah. Sure a bunch of people said "Ooh, can't make that date," and sure four of the people who confirmed subsequently had things come up that caused them to join the cancellation list. Sure the weather is kind of iffy for a dead animal roast. Je ne care pas!
Trevor Cahill shoulders the pressure of pitching in front of the first Chez Nico of the 2009 season, and he reportedly has a few extra butterflies as a result. Following a stinker of a start 8 days ago and some extra bullpen work since, Cahill will try to get back on track against the team he scared hitless for the first 6.1 innings on April 12th. Jarrod Washburn, a l-l-l-lefty, makes the start against Oakland.
Meanwhile, in the latest turn on the roster carousel Santiago Casilla is on the 15-day DL (when confronted with proof, he will later admit that it was actually the 17-day DL), and Gio Gonzalez has been added to the bullpen. With the Rivercats, Gio posted the following stat line over 4 starts: 1-0, 2.12 ERA, 17 IP, 13 hits, 9 BB, 18 K.
Time to barbecue some dead animals, and then try to win in honor of dead animals Eric Chavez, Mark Ellis, Nomar Garciaparra, Justin Duchscherer, Joey Devine...

The A's have to win!
It’s a matter of honor. My Mother the Mariner fan just called to gloat over last night’s victory. Her best line was…Lopez hit the winning run and he’s not even a good player. Yeah yeah yeah… and my weak response? “Cahill is spotty because he’s a rookie. We still don’t know what to expect from him”. Gotta cover our bases.
Geren said that Mark Ellis also had an MRI and the left calf strain he incurred on Tuesday is relatively severe: He’s expected to miss four to six weeks.

I hope Petit is starting at 2nd for the forseeable future.
Patterson can’t handle it defensively.
It’s not good to see Davis starting though. Buck is clearly being platooned with a sub standard hitter.
+1
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
But not Buck, thank heavens!
(He can actually hit lefties.)

Oh come on Nico
Here’s to Davis’ 0-fer for the night. Although with only 39 AB’s tough for Buck to really get going with all the days off and now, another stud (not) LH pitcher.
Damn with Davis in
Sweeney can’t make a brilliant catch in center for a third straight game!
Although Slusser reports that both Sweeney and Davis are starting center fielders. Left handed Seattle bats should be happy
