Mixed findings thus far. We have had a lot of success offensivly, but the organization's highly touted offense has been in great flux all year. Gio is doing well at AAA, but we have something weird going on with Mazzaro and Simmons, who's ERA and Periferals don't match (Simmons should be better, Mazzaro worse).
Adrian Cardenas got promoted to AAA, but has yet to play due to rainouts. Chris Carter is behind him waiting for a promotion (as is the rest of the red hot Midland team outside of Josh Donaldson).
But the biggest supprise thus far has to be David Thomas, who was put 49th by AN this off season, only to tear up Kane County and get promoted to Stockton. Also breaking out from his ranking on the list is Dusty Coleman, who is on fire in Kane County, not that his fellow SS/3B Counterpart, Jason Christian, is doing bad at all.
Middle Infield is now a strength of the system, which is shocking, as this time last year, we had no good prospects at 2nd Base, Shortstop or Third Base at all. Now we have about half a dozen.
Hat tip to The Baseball Cube for the stats.

I'm pretty pleased with the way the offense has faired so far.
Carter looks like an RBI machine. Capra has pitched extremely well—a lot better than I expected after a tiny sample from last year. I really hope Christian, Coleman and Leyja pan out.
Still a very good looking system and De Los Santos, Weeks, Ynoa, Dixon haven’t yet made any appearances.

PItchers with command problems
Gio has been his usual self with the BBs in Sacto, but Hunter, Italiano, and especially Lansford have had no idea where the ball is going. Is Lansford hurt? Trying something new? It’s hard for me to understand why his numbers are so bad.
I’m really happy that Carter has taken a step forward. He’s always been streaky, and if he goes 1 for his next 20 he won’t look as great, but so far this season he’s been the Texas League’s Frank Thomas.
And thank you for putting this series together, Zonis. It’s a great addition to the site.

Carter's swing seemed a bit more level
a couple of weeks ago when I saw him. My guess then was that he was being coached to make more contact and less swinging for the fence. As far as power, he was bouncing a lot of line drives off the center field fence instead of clearing it. Stll lots of power. I think he will be fine and is actually hitting much better than last year at Stockton. Midland Rocks Hounds!

Isn't it kind of a disadvantage
to have your advanced-A team play in a place that’s so cold in April that you’re afraid to send your prospects there until a month into the season?

Kane County is low-A
The A+ team is in Stockton. It just turns out this year that more of our prospects would be heading out to A ball instead of being ready for high A. But yes, it would strike me as something a team would look in to. A swap of KC for a warm-weather city would be a boost because there would be less to worry aobut with injuries, rain-outs and the like.
You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

No, not really
There’s only two single A leagues – the Sally League and the Midwest. Every city represented in the Midwest League is cold. There is a Southern Division to Sally League and it has three teams in Georgia, but overall you could definitely say that the landscape of low-A is dominated by cold weather cities for most of the year.

Questions about fielding
Carter is listed as a 3B, Cardenas as SS, Doolittle as RF – any idea as to how (if?) they are playing these positions, as well as their more natural ones, for want of a better word?
It's never too soon to jump to conclusions
by alea iacta est on May 3, 2009 1:12 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Slusser reported the other day that Cardenas has been playing SS at AA, and that the A’s think he’s good enough there to be an option for them (“at least some of the time”) at SS as early as next season. Cardenas as even an average-fielding SS would be a tremendous prospect.
I think that Doolittle is a 1B because he pitched a lot in HS and college, and they wanted to rest his arm when he wasn’t on the mound. He was a successful college pitcher, so I assume he has enough arm to play RF.
Carter, I agree with — if he’s not that great a 1B, I don’t understand how he could be even a passable 3B. But I don’t know whether he’s actually playing many games at 3B. On the Rockhounds’ official stats page he’s listed as a 1B.

Carter
was tried at 3B at Stockton for several games in 2008. Not good. This year in Midland, he has played only 1B, and doing OK.
by redtopcowboy on May 3, 2009 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Slusser got it wrong
Cardenas spent most of his time at 2B for the Rockhounds, and he made all 3 of his errors when he moved over to SS. Considering that Josh Horton was his competition at SS, I’m not sure how committed the A’s are to the idea of Adrian Cardenas, SS.

Okay, that makes sense (except for the part about SuSlu getting it wrong!)
And it looks like Donaldson has been catching pretty much exclusively, right? Is his 3B experiment looks over?

I beg to differ
First, it was a member of the front office who told me they like what Cardenas had done at SS at Midland.
I just checked Baseball Reference and Cardenas played 26 games at SS, none at 2B this year.

Okay, color me confused!
First, Susan, everything I’ve seen tells me that you’re an excellent reporter. Like I said, the one part about grover’s post that didn’t make sense was the assertion that you got it wrong.
The link you gave, though, took me to the Rockhounds 2008 stats. I can’t find 09 stats for Cardenas on baseball-reference.com. His 09 stats on the baseball cube leave the position column blank. Not real enlightening.
So I went to the Rockhounds’ website and checked the box scores. Here’s what I found looking at the box scores so far this season.
Cardenas started the season at 2B — he played his first 9 games there, with Horton at SS and Everidge or Chen at 3B. Then, on 4/19, he played at SS, with Horton at DH and Wimberly at 2B. He played 7 games in a row at SS (Horton at DH, Wimberly and Chen sharing 2B mostly, though Chen also played some 3B along with Everidge), then on 4/29 returned to 2B (Horton going back to SS), and played his last 2 games before his callup at 2B.
So that’s a total of 11 games at 2B and 7 at SS, with one DNP. I don’t think Carter or Donaldson has played at 3B yet this year.

Begging is beneath you, and were I any less mature I'd be making a crude joke based on this set-up
If the A’s like Cardenas at SS so much the why did the Rockhounds give the bulk of the starts to Horton in April? Granted, Horton was a 2nd round pick in 2007 but he’s way down the food chain in terms of prospect status vs. Cardenas.
I’m curious to see how the River Cats line-up is going to shake out with Cardenas and Yung Chi Chen in the fold. Chen played a lot of 3B for Midland and I’m not sure how many more chances Pennington is going to get to prove himself a long term answer at SS.
Is Cardenas the answer to Oakland’s problems at SS? The bat looks great but Baseball America, Baseball Prospecus and John Sickels (basically, the top three independent minor league scouting resources available to the public) all question Cardenas’ range. The Phillies, who drafted Cardenas, did not think he had the range to play SS in the big leagues.

The A's could go a classic prospect route with Cardenas
That is, with few good Shortstop options in the high minors/majors, they could play Cardenas at Short till one of Coleman, Christian or Leyja are ready. Coleman and Christian are legit Shortstops, and both have come out of the gate hitting. If both get promoted to Stockton A+ sometime this year, then spend time at Midland and Sacramento in 2010, either could be ready as soon as 2011, which would give Cardenas just a couple years at SS in the Majors to see if he can stick, or if he would then be moved to 2nd Base to make room for Coleman/Christian and take over for Ellis, or move to 3rd Base to take over for the remnants of Eric Chavez and have Jemile Weeks, if he is ready by then, at 2nd Base.

I'd buy that
But my question remains: If the A’s are so thrilled with Cardenas at SS then why did Horton receive the bulk of the starts for Midland in April? ‘Cause there’s an obvious need in Oakland at SS by Opening Day 2010 at the latest and (SSS) it looks like Cardenas’ bat should be ready.
If Cardenas spends the rest of 2009 at the River Cats’ SS then never mind, question answered. But if Pennington gets the bulk of the starts then something isn’t right. I realize Slusser has a source telling her the A’s are happy with Cardenas at SS but if they don’t let him play the position in AAA why should we believe he’ll be the SS in Oakland?
Thus far in 2009 what the A’s FO says about Cardenas at SS does not match up with how they’re playing him in the field.

I stand corrected
Reading comprehension poor early in the a.m. Well, the fact remains a member of the front office said they like what he’s done at SS and they think he can play there some at the big-league level. To be exact, the sentiment was that he was about average there, which they felt was good enough considering his hitting ability.
Sorry to jump in with erroneous info, I should save that for the Drumbeat and the paper. :)

Midland Dreaming
I just wish Midland could have had DLS healthy in the rotation for one week before we lost Cardenas and Chen to Sac. DLS on the mound, with Donaldson catching, Carter at first, Wimberly at second, Cardenas at SS, Chen at third, Sulentic in right, Corey Brown in center, Putnam in left, Everidge at DH, with Benacka setting up, and Demel closing. WOW!
That AA team would not come in last in the AAA Pacific Coast League.
