Dodged a bullet - nice job.

Just a note: The big mistake, IMO, in that inning was not pitching Crawford away. Single to left = 1st and 2nd, single to right = 1st and 3rd. In that situation, you pitch him away and try to overpower him.

Win or lose, this is a great game.

Games like this is my answer to those guys who argue we may as well blow up the team if we can’t “contend” this year. No matter what the W-L record at the end of the year, a great game is a great game.

To be fair

I’d hope that we don’t dump Outman, Bailey, or Wuertz in the blowing up process – they are all positives for us this year.

Yes.

Lots of excitement. Suspense right up to the end. Good performance by Outman. Excellent drama in the Bailey inning.

You have to look at the big picture

The two guys who have bunted are two of the highest average hitters on the team. They have bunted to set things up for Crosby, Cunningham, Cust (not a high average hitter), Holliday, and Giambi. The first two are bad hitters and the last three drive guys home from first as well as from second.

Springer is not terrible.

He’s playing poorly, but it was a good signing and he should play better as the season progresses. He’s actually striking out more than he normally does, but is doing pretty much everything else much worse. Maybe he hasn’t adjusted to the AL but I have to believe his BABIP will come down from .348 and some of the HRs will turn into flyouts. His track record is too good to believe he won’t do better.

by Rocktopus on May 19, 2009 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Go back to the almost certain 3 run homer than Sweeney took away in Texas

and work back from there and you will See Springer is pitching like Dana Eveland from the right side.

by Trainman on May 19, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know about that.

Yeah, his BABIP is high, higher than he’s used to, but his FIP (which doesn’t have any effects from BABIP at all) is almost two runs higher than his ERA. Plus, his xFIP (FIP with a normalized home run rate) is a tad higher than his regular FIP. He’s actually doing better than average with respect to HRs and flyouts.

by danmerqury on May 19, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

He might be doing better than average.

But he’s not doing better than HIS average. He’s producing a higher percentage of fly balls than in previous years and more of those fly balls are being hit for home runs.
He’s playing uncharacteristically bad and I expect him to improve. The only thing that worries me is that the velocity on his pitches is down, but it’s not a significant decrease and he’s not having trouble striking hitters out. Anyway, I don’t think he’s a terrible pitcher, I just think he’s pitching pretty terrible so far.

by Rocktopus on May 19, 2009 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

It's OK, he's just making it interesting.

WE'RE WITHIN 8, BABY!!!

Winning one game does that to me.

It's nearly 11am where I am right now!

I miss watching live games in the evening.

I was going to buy a copy of The Power of Positive Thinking, and then I thought: "What the hell good would that do?"

Did I hear this right?

According to the Rays broadcast Springer was the first captain in the Big Leagues, in 1992 with the Yankees

Who was the first guy to cross the union line?

That guy who used to catch for us??

Damian Miller?

Yep.

He was left off the official World Series photo of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Talk about a powerful union. Obama couldn’t break it up if he tried.

All I know about T-Long is that he had one of the most

amazing catches I’ve ever seen and he let strike two go by in the playoffs. I have blocked out everything else.

I don't think so.

He’s not old enough. Strike was when? 1994? T Long’s rookie year was 1999. He’d have been a pretty young scab.

I think Shane Spencer is another, though.

He's left out of the video games, too.

A lot of merchandising stuff is negotiated through the union.

Giambi needs to grow the stache back...

If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

Holliday being interviewed

Said The Lord gave him strength to hit it out.

Said he questioned the first two pitches but didn’t know if they were strikes until he looks at replay.

Praised Outman and said his change and slider are getting better
