I'm personally pulling for Fernandez

Got the chance to chat with him after a game in Lake Elsinore last year that I covered, then a little more in Lancaster the day after a start. Pretty nice guy. Big 311 fan as well. We’ve both been to 311 Day in New Orleans now. ;-)

Big gripe.

This team is fucking horrible. The next most interesting thing for Oakland will be who they will take with their top 5 pick next year.

I disagree!

It’s easy to watch a team when they are winning. I am going to watch every night to see what different and unique ways this can implode! Errors from every infielder? Check. Home run hitters hitting dribblers. Not a problem. 6 run leads given up. It’s easy! If you watch the A’s every night, you will see something you have never seen before.

BB is a very intelligent guy. No doubt about that one.

However, if he ran a business like he does this team right now would he make a profit? I know that some of these moves take time but Geren should be fired NOW and he should make some wholesale changes (like he did shipping Jeremy Giambi) to give the team a chance to respond. Sitting idle isn’t helping anything.

It's always interested me

Most British actors can do a very good American accent, but very few Americans can do a convincing English accent.

by Englishmajor on May 18, 2009 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I've known stage actors who were great,

But the standards seem to be low for radio voices.

I’ve known way too many Gilbert & Sullivan geeks, and nearly all of them do a passably good accent. I wonder if it’s a matter of audience demand. If you went on stage in a G&S show with a bad accent, all the G&S queens would rip you mercilessly. But do a crappy accent on a Pepsi ad and no one cares.

Go on the continent and they’re all at least bi-lingual.

It’s just because we have better actors.

by OldhamA on May 18, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Best way to pick up an accent is immersion.

I have a friend who lived in London for a year. That was about five years ago but even now she can pop into a perfect accent any time she wants to.

I wonder if it’s easier for British actors to immerse themselves in American accent than vice versa, simply because American talk is more ubiquitous.

That said, I think the real answer here is laziness. Developing a good accent as an actor is 99% study and practice. Either you care enough to do the job or you don’t.

It’s a lot easier to pitch well, or strike guys out, when it’s a blowout. You can see the stuff, the process, but not really whether they’re “ready for prime time.”

Funny thing about All Star teams

We’ve had teams in the past which were much better than this one but no obvious candidate for the All Star game. On the other hand, this year’s team is awful but we have three legitimate candidates. I think Cust totally deserves it, and both Suzuki and Bailey are perfectly respectable choices as well.

by iglew on May 18, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel like it's going to be Bailey only.

Unless Cust starts hitting for more power, he simply won’t have the numbers to make it as an outfielder.

Suzuki has a shot, but it’s going to be tough to beat Mauer, Victor Martinez, and Mike Napoli.

by Rocktopus on May 18, 2009 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

The only way I see him beating any of those three

is if Martinez gets knocked for not playing full time catcher or if Napoli starts getting fewer at bats because Vlad comes back and takes the DH.

Sizemore's hitting .220 with 7 HRs.

Cliff Lee is turning it around but it might be too late. I don’t think he makes it.
Martinez is hitting .401 with 7 HRs. Whether Sizemore makes it or he does not, Martinez should be voted in. He’s been playing some 1B so maybe he makes it as a 1B. But then Suzuki still has to beat out Napoli whose numbers are better, or hope they carry a 3rd catcher.
