5/18/09: Stress Relief DLD
The biggest event of my job is tomorrow, and I'm at the point now where I'm not sure what I have left to do, but I'm certain there's something I should be doing, but I can't figure out what, so I'm creating a DLD. Wear it.
Typos at work are a bad thing. Or maybe they can work out for the best....
When changing your name, be sure to include all proper punctuation and spaces.
If you are going to mess around at work, don't do it in view of the company web cam...
This is one of my most favorite comic strips ever. And my work nightmare for tomorrow. If there is a sudden freak snowstorm in the Bay Area tomorrow, you'll know that it's all my fault.
And now I have to get back to work and try not to fully panic before tomorrow. But use this for your dumping purposes. We need something to do besides think about those games this weekend.....

Agreed, C&H is one of, if not the best, comic strips ever.
For anyone who loves it, here’s a searchable archive of the strips.

Very unusual occurence
D-Rays pitcher bats 3d in game, in place of DH, and goes 1-3 with a double.

I never knew the DH was actually optional.

Rays
The unplanned lineup change didn’t hurt the Rays in the fourth inning, though. Sonnanstine came to the plate with Michel Hernandez on second and two out and lofted a double over Cleveland left fielder Ryan Garko’s head to give the Rays a 7-3 lead. It was Sonnanstine’s fifth career hit, and his first for extra bases.
Can we sign Sonnanstine? We could sure use a hitter.
Enjoy the game

So, has anyone noticed that the new 860 Xtra Sports has a new color motif?
I say we start emailing for local shows instead of the syndicated stuff that is going to eb played now.

word
I wouldn’t mind a near-future rotation of Duke, Braden, Outman, Anderson and Gio. Gallagher gets some long-relief (real, Dan Giese sans-injury style long relief. Not that fake “Bob Geren hates Sean Gallager” long relief he did to start the season). Eveland stays in AAA, joined by Cahill so he can work on keeping his pitches down AND for strikes.
Hmm, that rotation might stand a chance.
by cityplANner on May 18, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Geren just said on the pregame show
that Gio would be used as Giese was, and as Gio himself was earlier this season. Geren said that Gio can “throw up to 100 pitches, like he did in Seattle.”

The answer to our SS woes?
I’m not going to hold my breath, but one NY columnist has postulated about the Mets trading Jose Reyes if they don’t make the playoffs this year. Rob Neyer links to the column and discusses the merits of the idea.
I don’t think this will actually happen, but if it did I think this is the kind of trade BB should explore. As noted in the article Reyes is 26 so he’s entering his physical prime. His current deal pays $9M for 2010 and an $11M club option for 2011 ($0.5M buyout). With all the money coming off the books after the next 2 years, the A’s should be able to afford to re-sign him which would take care of that position for the next 5-6 years or so.

Unlikely that the A's could afford him
It looks like a good trade idea, but man, it would probably cost a fortune in prospects.

I've seen that
other writers think that Reyes is one of the cornerstones that you just don’t trade. They think that if the Mets get broken up the older players will get traded first.
by OaklandSi on May 18, 2009 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's such a dearth of SS talent that it'd be pointless to trade Reyes.
They just need to stop making him such a focal point of the offence – he’s a very good defensive short stop. It’s not like they don’t have the money to bring in players around him, Wright and Beltran.
by OldhamA on May 18, 2009 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes. There are very few good SS's available, as we have seen all over, especially when it comes to acquiring one when you are desperate
They have a Good SS, for a good price, at a time when most teams would settle for “terrible” at SS.
This isn’t the late 90’s, early 00’s. We no longer have Jeter, ARod, Garciaparra and Tejada manning SS as young, strong superstars. Now we have an injured ARod playing 3B (but still very good), Jeter who can no longer handle the position (though thats been true for a while), Garciaparra who can’t stay in the field and can’t hit anywhere close to his prime, and Tejada, who is staying on the field but lost most of his skill. Each player, besides ARod, are seeing the end of their careers in sight within the next few years, and possibly as soon as next year, none of them will be at Shortstop. Even Michael Young.
Now we have Reyes, Ramirez and Tulo. Then it falls off considerably.
There are some good or decent SS’s coming up. Escobar(s) and Andrus come to mind. But none will be Superstar level players.
That leads to two things. First, they should lock up Reyes long term. Second, if they do trade him, they will get a massive haul.
I just hope that one of Leyja, Coleman, Christian or Cardenas can become good SS at the MLB level. Cardenas already looks like he won’t be able to man it defensivly. Christian has been moved to 3B, not because he’s a bad SS, but because the A’s believe he can play 3B and it seems they want to keep him with Coleman, who also plays SS (presumably better). But Leyja is an unknwon defensivly, is still very young, and hasn’t even gotten out of extended Spring Training yet.
Don't believe in yourself.

The question is, how much does Minaya know this?
Obviously he knows that Reyes is a valuable player to trade, but does he view him as a Manny/Holliday/Bay type or a Haren type when it comes to a trade? If he thinks of him as a Haren type then there’s no way the A’s should trade for him. But if the recent trades for star players are used as a guide (as NateHST has been discussing in his FPs) then a deal becomes more possible from the perspective of what the A’s might be willing to give up.
Pretending for the moment that a deal for Reyes would require prospect + pieces as recent deals have, would Anderson or Cahill + 2-3 lesser players/prospects be worth giving up to get Reyes? I’m no good at judging the relative trade value of players versus keeping them, but I would assume that one of those 2 pitchers would have to be included. I would guess the Mets would want a potential SS in return (Cardenas) and maybe a 1B (Carter or Barton if he has a bounce back year in AAA) with the question marks about Delgado’s health. Would Cahill/Anderson + Cardenas + Carter/Barton be too much given everything else Oakland has in the system? I understand it would be tough to give up those guys, but those are the positions that the system has some depth and they’d be getting back a superstar in his prime at a position of need.
