GOG 2009 #14
It was a tough weekend to be an A's fan, but here in the GOG, we are not above a little bit of schadenfreude (spelled it right on my first try!), so let's consider the Tampa Bay Rays. One of the most talented teams in baseball, coming off a season where they made it to the World Series, with last year's RoY putting up MVP type numbers, a gold glove first baseman leading the league in home runs, and a left fielder on pace to steal 100 bases (and hasn't been caught yet). So I just have to laugh when I see that the Rays are below .500 and in 4th place behind Toronto, Boston, and New York. At least Oakland is earning their bad record!
All right, so that was my best attempt to put a positive spin on this upcoming four game series in Florida. Bring your optimism or your despair, it's time for the GOG!

Four game series @ Tampa Bay Rays -- May 18-21
Update -- answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 2-2 split
- Carlos Pena, he once was ours... Predict his H/HR/K [2 points each] 3 H, 1 HR, 4 K
- Shockingly, Scott Kazmir's ERA is worse than Brett Anderson (yeah, I guess that a lot of Anderson's runs have been unearned), who is matched up against him. Which of those two starting pitchers gives up fewer runs? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Anderson allows fewer runs
- How many errors for the Oakland infield this series? [3 points] 2 errors, one each for Cabrera and Kennedy
- Signs of life from Holliday? Predict his BB/H/Extra base hits [2 points each] 5 BB, 4 H, 1 XBH (game winning HR!)
- How many games does Aaron Cunningham start in the series? [3 points] 2 games
- James Shields leads the Rays starting pitchers with 75.7% percent of baserunners stranded. How many Athletics get left on base against Shields? [3 points] 5 of the baserunners allowed by Shields did not score, but 2 of those were stranded by J.P. Howell after Shields left the game. So I accepted both 5 and 3 as correct answers.
- How many swinging strikes does Braden induce in his start? [3 points] Only 3 swinging strikes!
- Does any Oakland player get a hit in all four games of the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes, Cabrera and Kennedy
- J.P. Howell, left handed reliever, strikes out 3 times as many hitters as he walks... this could be trouble. How many Oakland hitters does Howell strike out? [3 points] Howell gets 2 Ks
- Which team's pitching staff records more 1-2-3 innings in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Tampa Bay pitchers notch 15 1-2-3 innings, compared to 12 for Oakland pitchers
Game 1 starts at 4:08pm. Post your guesses!

Sorry about taking so long to grade this one. The scores this round were pretty good, with no one getting less than 3 points and a nice fat tail on the plus side of the distribution.

Your Scores
The victory for GOG #14 goes to mikeA, who is still in good position to challenge zaniac75 and nevermoor for the overall lead. Also, harenshair is having an incredible start to his/her GOG career, with 37 points after just two entries! You need at least 4 entries right now to be eligible for the AVG title, otherwise harenshair would be absolutely dominating that category.

not as optimistic as last series
but you could argue that predicting the A’s to win any games at all is optimistic
- 3-1 Tampa Bay
- Pena :: 6 H / 2 HR / 4 K
- Kazmir
- 2 errors
- Holliday :: 2 BB / 7 H / 2 XBH
- Cunningham starts 2 games
- A’s leave 6 on base against Shields
- Braden gets 12 swinging strikes
- yes (crosses fingers)
- Howell strikes out 5 in the series
- Tampa Bay
