today's A's starting lineup 5/17
In very small sample sizes here is how A's hitters have fared against the Tigers' starting pitcher:
Athletics hitters vs Armando Galarraga
2004-2008
Hitter AVG AB HR RBI
Buck, Travis .000 3 0 0
Cabrera, Orlando .333 3 0 1
Crosby, Bobby .000 3 0 0
Cunningham, Aaron .333 3 0 2
Cust, Jack .500 6 1 2
Davis, Rajai .000 6 0 0
Giambi, Jason - - - -
Hannahan, Jack .000 2 0 0
Holliday, Matt - - - -
Kennedy, Adam .500 2 0 0
Powell, Landon .500 2 0 0
Suzuki, Kurt .167 6 0 0
Sweeney, Ryan .667 6 1 1
apologies for the formatting. I can get it to look good until I publish it.
Perhaps Geren pays a little attention to minor league performance against Galarraga, since Powell is starting and catching. Then again, Cunningham is not.
Today's lineup according to Slusser:
Cabrera SS, Kennedy 2B, Jack Cust RF, Matt Holliday LF, Giambi DH, Sweeney CF, Crosby 1B, Landon Powell C, Hannahan 3B.

Oy.
What does Orlando Cabrera have to do to hit lower in the lineup?

I wish he wasn't right.
Although if you wanted to do it strictly based on merit to date, Crosby belongs in one of the top two spots.

Thanks for pointing me to the article, by the way
It’s kind of depressing that Suzuki and Sweeney both aren’t interested in hitting high in the order (or at least leadoff, in Suzuki’s case).

sure thing
I know that Crosby has a little bit of experience batting second, but I don’t know if he has batted leadoff.
Yeah
I’d think second would be a better spot for him, anyway. Who knows, though—maybe he’d chase fewer sliders if he understood his primary role to be getting on base.

He's chasing sliders way, WAY less then before
I think that’s why he’s been drawing so many BBs. Pitchers figure they can bounce a slider on 3-2 and get him to wave at it, and he’s finally recognizing it and taking it for ball four.
And I agree they should try hitting him leadoff.

The season has come to: Crosby batting leadoff and getting more AB’s than anyone else. That’s a recipe for a 100-Loss season.

I would give Cabrera the day off and this is what my lineup would look like today:
1. 2B — A. Kennedy
2. RF — J. Cust
3. DH — K. Suzuki
4. LF — M. Holliday
5. 1B — J. Giambi
6. SS — B. Crosby
7. CF — R. Sweeney
8. 3B — J. Hannahan
9. C — L. Powell

Would DH for Suzuki give him enough rest?
Since he’s not starting he’s probably on a scheduled day off, right?

That thought came across my mind, but we need his bat in the lineup.

they did that last weekend, didn't they
actually, since he’ll probably be catching all three games in Tampa Bay it makes sense to give him a rest. He could still pinch hit later in today’s game. Not only that, when they start both catchers they leave themselves open to problems. for example, if Powell catches and Suzuki DH’s, if Powell gets hurt they have to switch Suzuki to catcher, and then lose the DH for the rest of the game.
