Cunningham/Casilla Up.
According to ESPN's fantasy new updates, Arron Cunningham and Santiago Casilla up to the big club. Blevins down and Jeff Gray make room for Cunningham. I really hope they give Cunningham playing time as it doesnt make much sence to bring him up just to sit on the bench. Meanwhile our Pen gets stronger. Hope for Slusse rnow has her update in drumbeat blog over at SFGate.com. Lets hope Cunningham continues to mash.

Jeff Gray was sent down for Casilla.
Calling up Cunningham only makes sense if it’s to be a full-time replacement for either Sweeney (doubtful, unless you think he’s a centerfielder) or Buck (more likely). Odd that Blevins is the guy to get sent down instead of one of those two. What do we need with six outfielders (or five and a half, anyway)?

I forgot that even happened… thanks for the reminder. I guess we will find out in a few hours if not sooner.
It doesn’t look like another move will be happening if they sent Blevins and Gray down to make room for Cunningham. Perhaps Holliday just needs a few days and then they will decide what to do with all these outfielders…

Thx for the info DLJ.
That is interesting. The A’s management and the way they handle the release of injury info is suspect more often than not. It will be interesting to see what the broadcasters say about Holliday, especially if Cunningham ends up playing for him today.

I hope he does play
Calling a guy up to sit on the bench is fucking stupid.
The problem is, Cunningham/Sweeney/Buck is very likely to be the 2010 Opening Day outfield. I don’t get the point in calling up Cunningham now – Buck is barely playing, Davis is still on the team, Cust is still getting time in the OF.
Unless Holliday is hurt this makes no sense.

Just put Giambi at 1st everyday and Cust at DH
Stop putting Powell/Crosby at 1st. That will open up a spot in RF that Cust for whatever reason has been playing much more than he should.

Nomar should be back soon to spell him at 1B
No way should Nomar be playing even close to everyday though. So Crosby and Han will probably split most time at 3B.
by jakebmill on May 15, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Problem is
Geren still wants to get Giambi’s bat in the lineup on the days he’s not playing 1B, so he has to DH, and Jack Cust has to play the field.
Seriously, though, I can live with Jack Cust in the field once every ten days, or so

well, I agree
I don’t see the urgency to get his bat in the lineup, the way he’s hitting at the moment.
Thing is, though, neither you or I make out the lineup card (actually, probably a good thing, in my case), and Geren still has a boner for Giambi’s bat. or something

Way he's starting to hit at the moment
Is that he’s starting to slowly put it together. He’s starting to get that slugging percentage, OBP, and eventually average back up, so I don’t think now is the time to start giving him off days more often than not. He’s a good hitter, and he’s not going to get into his stride om the bench…

I don't think anyone is advocating benching Giambi

Not cunningham/sweeney/buck
I don’t think that will be the outfield in 2010. Unless Buck suddenly starts hitting major league pitching, I think he’s through with the A’s. You’re more likely to see Cunningham/FA or trade/Sweeney in the outfield in 2010, or possibly Cunningham/Sweeney/Doolittle.
When Nomar comes back, I have a feeling Rajai will be released and Buck will have a skootch more time to pull it together. But if he doesn’t, even in limited playing time, he’s gone.
by richwol1 on May 15, 2009 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think Rajai will be released, because he's the only backup center fielder
the A’s clearly do not think that Buck can do it, and I don’t think Cunningham has played there at AAA.
that would let me to suppose that they’re likely to keep him. Whether this is good or not, well, that’s another question

Am I the only one who doesn’t have a problem with this? I like Cust just fine in the outfield. Yeah, he’s not the greatest, but there are plenty of great hitters in MLB who grace the outfield with their crummy defense, and Cust is not the worst of them.
I don’t object to him as DH if that’s what’s available, but I don’t want to screw with the lineup just to make Cust the DH. Put the best bats in, and if Cust ends up in RF, so be it.
Incidentally, last year his bat was noticeably better when he was playing outfield, but so far this year the splits are the other way. Probably just random noise in both cases.

Hmmm...
Are people sure we’re sending down Gray and Blevins? Like others have said, that leaves us with six outfielders, strange since our bullpen is so overtaxed and we need the depth more in the IF than OF….it would blow my mind if Davis wasn’t DFAed (assuming no DL to another OFer). Who would claim him anyway?
Don’t know what this does to Buck unless we start playing him at third (when I heard this mentioned earlier on AN I hoped and prayed it was a joke). Does anyone think that Cunningham is better against RHP than Buck right now? Aren’t we still trying to contend? I’m confused.

the sending down of Gray and Blevins is official.
With Braden and Anderson starting this weekend, the pen is back to 8 pitchers.
Also, Nomar is going to be returning soon as well so that may be when they either DFA Davis or move Buck (or DL Holliday).
I am betting that if Davis is DFA’ed, he will likely end up back in Sac after clearing.
I agree. I don’t like this. Buck needs more of a chance than what he has been given.

As you don't need to DFA Davis right now
doesn’t it make sense to see how Cunningham looks at the major league level, for a bit?
As much as I really don’t rate Davis as a bat, he is currently the only backup CF (I really don’t think Buck can handle CF), and there’s definitely a case to be made for Buck to be sent down, get some playing time, etc; as it is Geren, just doesn’t seem to have confidence in him.
I’m not saying I’d agree with this happening, but I could see it going this way

Buck failed to get a bunt down or move a runner over against KC the other night. And that was the second time in, what, a week that he failed to get that done? He also misplayed Jacobs’ HR (or was it Crisp?) in the first game against KC.
So, maybe this is Geren holding Buck accountable.

A's website has Braden starting tonight
but Marty Lurie just said that Anderson is starting tonight.
So which is it?

it's Anderson tonight
according to Yahoo! sports A’s page

is anyone listending to the pregame on 860 AM
and hearing the phone conversation in the background? Sounded like the recording of the Forst show and I thought I heard something about rain…
by jakebmill on May 15, 2009 2:36 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, it's almost unlistenable
there have been multiple problems with the broadcasts on 860; the worst problems I’ve heard have been on Marty’s show.

Marty is broadcasting from the bay area
so his show shouldn’t be affected by bad weather in Detroit
by OaklandSi on May 15, 2009 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think I heard them say rain was to arrive by 9 PM.
Just what the A’s don’t need, more off days and games to make up.
by jakebmill on May 15, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
now it's raining in Detroit
according to Slusser.
She also says that Anderson is the A’s scheduled starter for tonight.

&%#$!
Also, they announced earlier this week that it was Anderson-Braden today-tomorrow. Strange that their site said otherwise. Fingers crossed that the blister doesn’t resurface…

the home page has Braden
but the preview written by Urban has Anderson…guess whoever is supposed to maintain the website hasn’t gotten around to the home page.

Yeah, I think it's supposed to be Mr. Blister tonight
and Branded-with “Bud Selig” Dude tomorrow.

GOOD LORD.
I would really like for there to be a game for me to watch tonight, thanks, Mother Nature.
Nico: Okay. We have twelve hours to make a really big pickle.

+1
this is a bummer if it gets rained out. Maybe we’ll have a full Saturday of A’s.

I scheduled my Saturday so I could watch the game.
Sad, I know, but I have lunch and dinner plans and the 4pm start time fit in perfecty.

on the pregame show Geren just said
“when you come up to the big leagues you have to perform”
wonder who this was aimed at…
by OaklandSi on May 15, 2009 3:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A player who shall go unmentioned
But we’ll call him “Bravis Tuck” just to put a name on him?
by worldblee on May 15, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
say the manager who continues to play
rajai/hannahan/crosby
by Asfan4ever723 on May 15, 2009 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
have you looked at Crosby's numbers this year??
Davis has 29 PAs, Hannahan 27.
Buck has… oops, watch out— 72.
by jasonthea on May 15, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes
up until a week or so davis was an unofficial platoon who buck was losing ab’s too
i’ll give hannahan a break somewhat since its poor planning overal relying on chavez/nomar to be healthy, but he was the worst hitter in qualifying abs in the league last yr. geren has a man crush on hannahan/davis due to defensive value.
crosby sucks and is irrelevant to the team’s future, i’d rather give petit/patterson/pennington etc a chance to fail and see them in extended playing time.

A player to be named later,
like when they demote the next guy. Buck or Davis, let the betting begin.
by jakebmill on May 15, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Buck can be optioned to Sacramento if the As want
Davis would have to be DFA’d since he’s out of options
by OaklandSi on May 15, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, but I am not convinced anyone will claim Davis
so he may just end up back in AAA and I wouldn’t complain either way.
by jakebmill on May 15, 2009 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Was he looking in the mirror when he said that?
Nico: Okay. We have twelve hours to make a really big pickle.

unless he's about to move holliday....
i don’t understand calling up cunningham. even if you dfa davis, you still have cust, buck, hollday, and sweeney.
If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.
