DLD 5/14/09- A Voice in the Bay??

The A's radio Flag station is changing to all sports, starting with syndicated shows.  I wonder if in the future, they will have local shows, and an actual morning show, so we can hear A's centric radio, instead of the Murph and Mac giants show.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/14/SPB817K94C.DTL

The A's radio channel, KTRB 860, is going all-sports Monday. The station will have syndicated shows on the air whenever the A's are not, beginning with "Todd & Tyler's Radio Empire" from 6-10 a.m. weekdays

I hate hate HATE modern representations of colisseum combat

Thumbs down doesn’t mean death. Thumbs down means “we’re so unimpressed by your defeat of this guy that you don’t get to kill him. Sucks to be you”
Thumbs up doesn’t mean life. It means “hey, you rocked that guy: way to go! Now you get the pleasure of finishing him off”

The incorrectness of the thumbs up/down says a lot about how current culture projects on cultures that preceded it.

Well, since you brought it up....

gladiator deaths weren’t as common as many believe. Seems sports owners have faced similar problems throughout the centuries….namely, it costs a lot of damn money to train these guys. You can’t have them whacked every time there’s a tournament. Ticket prices would go through the roof.

My understanding is it was open palm vs fist

and no thumbs at all.

I’d really like to see a reliable classical cite on this. You can find dozens of “mythbuster” type web pages debunking this myth (not all of them consistent with each other), but if there’s one with proper referencing to a contemporary source, I haven’t found it.

Well, I spoke too soon.

After writing that I was inspired to look a little, and I find this, from Juvenal.

Footnote 5 explicitly supports the idea of thumb down for life and thumb up for death. My Latin isn’t good enough to be sure, but it looks like the text itself is unspecific, saying only that the thumb is turned.

And here is a fairly detailed scholarly discussion of the problem (from 1892, 20 years after the infamous painting), with lots of sources.

I lovez the Internets. There’s a whole lot of bilge to wade through but it’s still so much better than it was. In my youth I’d have spent a day in the library chasing this down.

It's an interesting one

I’m going to have to try and remember some references to this in Classical literature, but bear this in mind – the ‘Roman’ world wasn’t just a twenty year period, it lasted for hundreds of years, many generations and spanned many miles. So customs changed and differ a lot, depending on your source. As such, you may well find contradictory evidence as to what the various hand gestures mean.

Hm, I’m pretty sure there’s something in Ovid about it. hm.

It's never too soon to jump to conclusions

by alea iacta est on May 14, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was actually

If I remember correctly… thumb up pointing to the throat, similar to throat slash gesture those NFL dudes were doing for a while minus the “slash” part. The thumb was a “stand in” for the sword.

Thumbs down was more thumb down and pointing away from the body. Again, thumb stands in for the sword in the gesture.

I think I first saw this explained on the History Channel by some professor or something.

I’ve conversed with professors who have been on History Channel programs, and a common theme is complaints about how the program selectively edited them in order to promote an argument that really isn’t what they were saying at all.

The ones I knew were medievalists.

THC loves to play up certain fashionable romantic aspects of history, to the point where it really distorts the picture. Can’t say I blame them, though. It is entertainment, after all. And it’s still a big improvement over learning history from a Russell Crowe movie, which seems to be the primary alternative for most viewers.

History v. Film

Whenever I see a “historical” film, I always go seek out just how historical it really was. Many liberties are taken in most cases to make a good story, most people probably don’t care and those who do look into it and learn a few things. So it does serve a purpose either way. With the internet you can usually get multiple sources which help form a clearer picture of the “truth.”

Sadly we watch THC for, well, H. So we assume it’s all “approved” history. Ideally one should never accept just one source, and those inclined to learn more will look into things more. THC can spark that interest.

Enjoy the game

move all the inmates to somewhere with lower real estate values

San Quentin is in a gorgeous location in Marin County. The real estate market might not be what it was a couple of years ago, but some developer will pay a lot for that land if they move the prison.

Related rant about putting prisons in poor communities is probably too much on the political side.

by colin on May 14, 2009 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

now to bring it back to the A's

San Quentin’s current location would also be a beautiful place for a ballpark. Right on the bay, with views to the east bay and San Francisco.

Lots of reasons why it would never ever work:
*surely an expensive parcel of land
*no public transportation, 101 already has horrible traffic
*I think that Marin probably counts as Giants territory

But, as a Marin native, I can dream.

It’s a lot easier to stop someone from building something than it is to uproot an existing institution.

I’m sure that plenty of Marin-ites would be happy to see San Quentin go. And then they would battle pretty much anything that someone tries to put in it’s place.

I can hear the signal fine on my little radio when at the Coliseum, unless I'm in the can under all that concrete

but then they thankfully play it over the speakers there.

I get it OK in my home in Fremont.

It doesn’t come in very well at my folks’ place in Petaluma.

Comes in OK in the car most of the time.

Comes in like crap, if at all, on BART with all that electrical interference.

So I don’t have it too bad, but it would be nice not to have to even think about a bad signal.

I live in Oakland

and get poor reception at home. In my car the reception is good unless I happen to go up a hill.

At Chez Nico (north Berkeley) I was struck by how poor the reception is.

Reception was pretty good in Napa, but the A’s also have a local affiliate station up there so it’s not necessary to listen to KTRB there.

During Marty Lurie’s program there are frequent hiccups where you hear a different canned program (not his). Last week they had a transmitter problem that knocked out most of his show.

by OaklandSi on May 14, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

reception in Albany and Berkeley is good and bad

street by street! You drive away from my house, and it improves 100%. Parked in the driveway, I only get good reception on the car radio if I stand outside the car, and hold the aerial. Then I listen through the open window….

That looks like real sanity right there!!

I drove West from Placerville to Berkeley the other day. Reception quality waxed and waned. Some areas of the Central Valley were more clear than sports around Oakland.

All sports! What an improvement over the self-important drivel they had on during non-Athletics time.

Can't hear KTRB - in Oakland

So, I’ve gotten used to not being able to hear KTRB at the Coliseum, and for some static while driving around. But last night in the flats around 9:00, I couldn’t hear it at all. This morning round 8:30, about a mile from the Coliseum, I couldn’t hear it at all. This evening from about 5:45 – 6:00 from the Oakland border to the Berkeley campus, I couldn’t hear it at all. We’re not talking some static – it sounded like the station was off the air.

It really doesn’t matter what the format is, if you can’t hear it.

by JohnDoe on May 21, 2009 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm
so we can hear A’s centric radio, instead of the Murph and Mac giants show.

I enjoy their show, it’s good morning radio without all the dumb-ass stuff. “Todd & Tyler’s Radio Empire” already sounds bad. Yeah they love the Giants, but the show is listenable unlike the previous John London show or that crap on the Bone. I fear more stupid s***.

I seem to be in the minority, but I have zero reception problems with 860 from Walnut Creek to Alameda, and I suppose I would give the A’s Flagship a shot. Good luck.

Enjoy the game

I get 860 just fine as well

Comes in great in Napa. I couldn’t disagree more about Murph and Mac—imho its the some of the worst radio I’ve ever heard. I find it totally unlistenable. In fact, almost all of KNBR is horrible. I can stomach some of Rod Brooks and Damon Bruce but little else. It will be refreshing to have options other than KHTK in Sac.

Watching this as well (back and forth with the Gnats)

It took me a moment to figure out why Harden was wearing #42 with no name on the jersey.

Harden leaving the game after giving up a double to A-Roid

That part of Harden I do not miss at all.

I was too.

I was sitting surrounded by Yankee fans so it was cool to see the Yankee fan disappointment when their idol blew it.

Watching Mutts and Gnats

Some bozo wearing an A’s sweatshirt just interfered with a ball in play and got his ass tossed from the stadium.

Did it hurt the Giants?

Cause if so, then I’d say he’s a good A’s fan.

No

The batter hit a double down the 3B line. The fan was sitting by the bullpen and reached over the wall to try to catch it. There was a runner at first at the time. The umpires ruled ground-rule double, so runners were at 2nd and 3rd. The Mets ended up scoring two runs in the inning with two outs – the next hitter drove in the runner from third with an infield single, the runner on second advanced to third, then scored on a wild pitch.

One could argue that the bozo saved a run for the Gnats because of the interference since the umpires did not allow the runner on 1B to score. I will always feel that a fan who interferes with a ball in play is no fan at all.

I'm with you,

unless it’s a smart fan that does something to help his team…

For example, if Steve Bartman were a Marlin fan in enemy territory, he’da been a g**damned hero to all twelve Marlins fans!

Wilson

Great seeing that horses ass blow a save (tie?) and get gestured back by Frankie, And how great is it to see Frankie in Mets garb, far away and in another league.

Enjoy the game

Please excuse me, but I'm going to have a tantrum now:

He stinks he stinks he stinks and everybody’s second cousin who’s got a buddy on the club says that they hear that nobody likes him and he’s a suckup, and really, if your manager’s not a genius, then he’s a fall guy, and this guy’s not a genius, so off with his figurative head.

BB

We have all been lead to believe that Bean doesn’t put much stock in managers (gee, Howe, Macha, Geren – whats not to like?) So Geren is what you get. I just don’t understand that philosophy. 3 ex-A’s coaches are up high on that list and Trey Hillman was in the running at the time as well. Injuries and youth aside, just how far will you go with Geren? Two years now of directionless mediocrity. The team is seriously lacking in fundamentals; no one can bunt when needed, players playing out of position with little experience (this is the major leagues, you can’t just throw guys out there.) To me the sloppy play and lack of game/situation awareness point to the manager.

Enjoy the game

According to the Palm Beach Post, “at least two pairs of Marlins” shared a room during this week’s series against the Brewers because they’re scared of the ghosts that haunt The Pfister.
