GOG 2009 #12

What's with all these two-game series? Sure, some of them were full length series cut short by weather, but I think that it's all a big conspiracy to make me write more GOG questions and grade more answers. But just wait until some four game contests roll around. I'll be on easy street!

Star-divide

This particular annoying short series is against the surprising Kansas City Royals. Well, maybe not that surprising, since I totally picked them to be the most improved team this year. Anyway, the Royals formula isn't that all that secret. Decent offense, decent pitching, and, oh yeah, top it off with one dude who is putting on one of the best pitching performances of all time. Fortunately, Oakland won't be going up against Greinke in these two games (though it would be cool to go to Vegas and wager a thousand bucks that he will throw a perfect game... I mean, it would be pretty much guaranteed, right?) and without him the Royals look a lot less like a team that should be at the top of the AL Central standings. So let's go A's!

Links

  • Probable pitchers
  • Royals stats
  • Graded results for GOG #10 and GOG #11 are finally posted. I updated the code I use to tabulate scores, so the tables are way cooler. You can read about it in the GOG #10 fANpost.
  • Dumbness of crowds part 2 is brand new! (and part 1 is here)

GOG #12 :: Thank God It's Not Greinke (33 points possible)

Two game series vs Kansas City Royals -- May 12-13

Update -- answers are included below in bold

  1. Series outcome [3 points] 2-0 OAK
  2. Pitchers duel, 24 and under edition :: Who throws a better game (in this case, better will be decided by WHIP), Cahill or Hochevar? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Cahill's WHIP of 1.5 beats the pants off of Hochevar's WHIP of 4.5
  3. Jose Guillen, formerly Athletic. Does that mean he's slow and out-of-breath now? Predict his AB/H/HR [2 points each] 7 AB, 1 H, 0 HR
  4. Mark Teahen was in Moneyball, so he must have been written by a computer names Billy Beane. How many walks does he draw in the series? [3 points] zero BB
  5. I hear that bringing Kyle Farnsworth into a game is like throwing gas on a bonfire. To update that simile, would bringing him into a game against the A's be more like throwing gas on a pile of very cold fire-retardant chemical? Question :: How many earned runs for Farnsworth in the two game set? [3 points] Farnsworth did not give up a run (1 IP)
  6. Another new series, another new A :: Predict Kennedy's AB/H/RBI [2 points each] 7 AB, 2 H, 0 RBI
  7. Will there be any outfield assists in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no outfield assists
  8. Which inning do the A's score the most runs in, putting the two games together (i.e. if they score 1 in the first inning of game one and 4 in the first inning of game two, that counts for 5 total)? Which inning do the Royals score the most runs in? [3 points each] The 2nd inning was best for Oakland (7 runs total). For Kansas City, it was a tie between the 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th, so any of those answers were correct.
  9. With Joakim Soria on the DL, does the Royals bullpen blow a save in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no blown saves (no save opportunities)
  10. Oakland has a putrid 52% success rate on stolen base attempts (successful on 11 of 21). How many stolen bases do they attempt in this series? [3 points] only 1 stolen base attempt, and it was successful (Suzuki)

This one is posted early, so your guesses all better be extra good. Deadline is Tuesday at 7:05 pm.

Results

Oh my god, I must have made the questions way too easy on this one because everyone scored really, really well. Enjoy this feeling while it lasts, because I think that things aren't going to look so rosy when I grade the Detroit GOG.

Your Scores

Seriously nice job by harenshair, who showed up for his/her very first GOG and posted the best score we have seen all season, eclipsing the 20 points that oblique scored way back on GOG #03. Of course, there is now a 4 GOG minimum to be eligible for the AVG title, so I guess that harenshair will just have to play some more.

The rest of the rankings got shaken up a bit, on account of some many points being scored this time. nevermoor is sneaking up on zaniac75, who is holding onto the overall lead for now. Early season leader micdog2001 paid the price for forgetting to post an entry this series and falls all the way to 11th!

whoops

misread question 8. I’ll say 6th inning for both teams.

by swatnick on May 12, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I've never done this. I'll try I guess.

   1. Series outcome [3 points] 1-1
   2. Pitchers duel, 24 and under edition :: Who throws a better game (in this case, better will be decided by WHIP), Cahill or Hochevar? 1 if right, -1 if wrong] Cahill
   3. Jose Guillen, formerly Athletic. Does that mean he’s slow and out-of-breath now? Predict his AB/H/HR [2 points each] 8/3/0
   4. Mark Teahen was in Moneyball, so he must have been written by a computer names Billy Beane. How many walks does he draw in the series? [3 points] 0
   5. I hear that bringing Kyle Farnsworth into a game is like throwing gas on a bonfire. To update that simile, would bringing him into a game against the A’s be more like throwing gas on a pile of very cold fire-retardant chemical? Question :: How many earned runs for Farnsworth in the two game set? [3 points] 1
   6. Another new series, another new A :: Predict Kennedy’s AB/H/RBI [2 points each] 7/2/0
   7. Will there be any outfield assists in the series? [1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
   8. Which inning do the A’s score the most runs in, putting the two games together (i.e. if they score 1 in the first inning of game one and 4 in the first inning of game two, that counts for 5 total)? Which inning do the Royals score the most runs in? [3 points each] 3rd, 5th
   9. With Joakim Soria on the DL, does the Royals bullpen blow a save in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no
  10. Oakland has a putrid 52% success rate on stolen base attempts (successful on 11 of 21). How many stolen bases do they attempt in this series? [3 points] 3

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.
