Open Game Thread: Game 20 - A's vs. Mariners (cont)
I hated that last thread. The A's offense staked Dana Eveland to a five run lead, and he couldn't hold it through two innings. He's given it all back; 7-6 Seattle now. He IS out of the game; going to the sixth.

Will everyone quit bashing Eveland
He pitched like shit but he didn’t pitch like shit because you all said he sucked in the Braden v. Eveland thread the other day. Quit taking it so personal.
Root for the A’s to do something positive instead of bitching about Eveland.
75% of the bashing is Trainman

I am waiting for the A’s to score half a dozen runs
Also
I am not going to apologize for wanting the A’s to win.
It gets really annoying seeing someone who has no ability to suceed continue to fail and management continue to trot him out there.
That is all I am going to say about Eveland.
Yeah, Management is completely oblivious

by alea iacta est on May 1, 2009 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions
My thought at the time (but not posted here, so I can't prove it)
is that Geren’s decision-making was fine until the last batter, a right-handed hitter after Eveland was obviously struggling. And then Geren did what he usually does, try to coax one more out of a starter so he can get the win. I never have liked that, as it’s managing by emotion.
I knew the bullpen option was Giese, though, so it’s not as if I was giddy about that prospect. But at that point, everyone knew it was going to be another 5-inning outing. So I would have pulled him.
Giese gets the only 1-2-3 inning pitched by the A's so far.

regardless of the situation, you don’t bunt when the guy at the plate is the best hitter of the next three coming up. You want to take the bat out of Buck’s hand to bring Crosby and Patterson to the plate? Or do you want to let Buck swing away when even a grounder to second will help?

If he's allowed to play every day,
Patterson will KILL the A’s at 2B. He can’t field even routine balls easily (he’s already cost them a run with the non-DP) and alongside Giambi he creates a terrible right side of the infield behind several sinkerballers. And he’s a speedy player who hits 4 fly balls in 4 ABs. Petit should be playing 2B.
