4/9 Minor Athletics

 

It is a very bitter-sweet day as we all mourn the death of Nick Adenhart, yet still look forward to the opening of the minor league baseball season. Nick showed how promising his talent was. All of our prayers are with his family.

 

With that being said, here is the rundown for our minor league squads.

Denorfia CF: 2-3, 3 R, 1 BB (Trying to make his case in an already crowded outfield)

Barton 1B: 0-3, BB

Cunningham LF: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI (so is he)

Doolittle RF: 0-4, K

Mazzaro SP: 4 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (Only threw 54 pitches, so I'm worried about an injury. Anyone know his status? He was very stellar today.)

Cardenas 2B: 0-4, 3K (Yikes. He is young in AA: only 21, but if this turns into a pattern, he may need more time in Stockton. I'll be patient.)

Carter 1B: 1-4, RBI, K

Donaldson C: 0-2, BB

Brown CF: 0-3 K

A Leon RP: 1 IP, H, 2 K (not exactly sure when the A's are planning on stretching Leon's arm out for a starting role or if he will continue to work in the pen. He is an exciting player though.)

Sean O'Sullivan dominated on the mound tonight for the Travelers, an affiliate of the Angels. He's only 21 and has pretty good stuff.

N Johnson RF: 1-4, 2B, BB, K (I don't really know much about Johnson other than that he is somewhat old for Stockton at 24 and that he has a nice bat.)

Mitchell CF: 2-3, BB, SB (This is make or break year for Mitchell).

Spencer LF: 0-4

Ross SP: 4 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Alderson pitched for the Giants and showed why he is considered a top prospect. He pitched four scoreless innings. Villalona went yard on a 2-4 day.

Dav Thomas CF: 2-4, SB, R

Coleman SS: 0-4, K (he has a cool name: Dusty. It helps that he can hit...not today though).

Franklin Hernandez LF: 1-4, 2B (Keep your eye on this kid. He is tall and lanky. He has a nice line drive swing and is 21.)

Desme DH: 0-4, 2K

I have no idea who the pitchers are. 

Well we start out the season 0-4. Good things these games don't count...oh wait.

Even though it’s early, this is still some good information. Damn, though, that’s 0-3 for the day.

Mazz, Leon, and Ross are really the only bright spots for today.

I’d really like to see Leon start. I hope the A’s haven’t pigeon-holed him into a reliever position already. You can never have too many good starters.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Forst said they still see him as a starter eventually

In an interview Forst mentioned that they would likely leave Leon in the bullpen this year because he pitched in relief in the Mexican winter league. They wanted to give him a full off-season to prepare for starting so they decided to wait untill next year to stretch him out. I imagine they are trying to slowly build his innings up and don’t want to rush him.

He's still young so it's a good idea to limit his innings.

I hope they encourage him to throw at least three pitches though.

I’m interested to keep an eye on David Thomas in Kane County. He wasn’t very heralded coming out of college last year but he hit well in short season ball. If he can get off to a good start at Kane County he could start to jump up on the A’s prospect list.

He also started in CF over Mitchell LeVier (RF), so they must think highly of him.

Converted 1B Franklin Hernandez was in LF.

Chris Leer at the River Cats' official website had this to say on Mazzaro:
Sacramento starting pitcher Vince Mazzaro was perfect through four innings, allowing only two walks and striking out five before leaving with a 2-0 lead. Mazzaro, who was on a tight pitch count, threw 57 pitches (34 strikes) before being replaced in the fifth inning by Bobby Cramer.

No mention of injury.

maybe it's just me...

…but “perfect through 4 innings, allowing two walks” just doesn’t seem right.

And Mazzaro looked as good as everyone is saying.

Excuse me while I go finish drying out my shoes from last night.

It’s going to be an interesting year without Cahill and Anderson taking the hill 40% of the time. We’ll see who steps up.
