Wild Giese land in Sacramento

Ok, it's pronounced Giese like vice, but play along....   :)

A cool story about Giese in the NY Post

SuSlu story

Get the wikipedia skinny on Dan

The A's just claimed Goose Gossage Dan Giese off waivers....

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) – The Oakland Athletics on Wednesday claimed journeyman pitcher Dan Giese off waivers from the New York Yankees and optioned him to Class AAA Sacramento.

A one-time used car salesman, Giese, 31, retired in 2005 after spending six years in the minor leagues without getting a shot in the major leagues.

However, the righthander returned to baseball with the San Francisco Giants in 2007 and signed with the Yankees following the season.

Giese went 1-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 20 games during two stints with New York last season, including his first three career major league starts.

To make room for Giese on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated righthander Chris Schroder for assignment.

A little insurance for the bullpen perhaps. Beats selling jeans cars!

would rather had C.Gaudin

makes we wonder that I do believe the A’s offered Gaudin a minor league contract but Billy mut think he won’t resign with us so he signed this lump of coal. I understand chad is pissed off for being demoted to the pen when he was with us, but when you get cut from a pen job in chicago and the team is willing to eat 1.6 million to just get rid of you tells me he should swallow his pride and sign back with the club who made him successful = A’s

also, reportedly since Gaudin hurt his back last summer

tripping on a curb and hitting a dumpster, he hasn’t been the same pitcher.

Better to dive into a pool than a dumpster.

I think you're making a couple assumptions here that don't really fit

1) Beane doesn’t think Gaudin would sign here so he’s not going to even try, which assumes Beane wants him in the first place. If Beane wants him, he’ll make an offer and see what comes of it.

2) Assuming Gaudin still cares about what happened last year. This is a business and if there’s an opportunity for him he’d be silly to turn it down, especially if nobody else is calling yet.

I would rather see Chad come back as well Ryan

AN has always had an affinity for Gaudin, and lobbied for him to start.. Sad day.

Damn.

I looked at his numbers. He’s always put up pretty good numbers. In the minors, he’s always put up an ERA of less than 4 except 38 innings in AAA in 2005, and 6 innings in 2003.

Can’t hurt as a little insurance—I like the move, not that it was a HUGE move or anything.

Any Yankees watchers know why they dumped him?

Their bullpen doesn’t appear to be overwhelmingly stable.

Good WHIP, decent strikeout rate…

Upon further investigation...

He had a weak Spring (ERA over 6.00), and they seemed to be clogged with long reliever types. They kept Brett Tomko, though. Let’s hope he ends up in the rotation.

That first picture is of Ian Kennedy

Not Giese.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

To those saying they would rather have Gaudin

there is not a 25 man roster spot available for Chad right now. If he would take a minor league deal, then great, but I would guess a team like San Diego would give him at least a minor league deal — and with the state of their pitching staff that would be the much smarter move for Gaudin (not to mention if he gets a call up he can put up some good numbers in Petco before he becomes a free agent).

So really, Beane could offer the minor league deal, but why would Gaudin accept?

I'm kinda surprised they DFA'ed Schroder instead of Gray
