DLD--4/8/09--Do we do these anymore?

Listen, you AN monkeys, I dunno who the hell you think you are, but we do these, every weekday, during the season.  You don't need to have a PhD, or any talent at all to post them.  All you gotta really gotta do is get one up before the next guy.

I am a sign monkey.  I obviously have great need for an HTML Monkey.  In my capacity as boss monkey in my sign shop, I don't often have time to make these.  And our core base has taken some hits as of late.  And the rest of the veterans around here have moved into a state of gelatinous ambivalence toward maintaining any of the old guard ways, especially given the manic pace of game threads--we had ~2,600 posts last count for our victory on Tuesday.

But that changes.  Now.  We post a DLD every frickin' day here.  It's what we do.

Part of being an Alameda creature was always Day on the Green.  I cannot suggest buying any of these, as they are kind of expensive (If I played guitar, I'd be Jimmy Page...for $1,750?!  American?), but it looks like the NKotB shot from '90 goes cheaply, and would look nice on that accent wall in your den.  BTW, if you like classic rock and you don't know about Wolfgang's Vault, y'all better axe somebody.  Seriously.

This is begging for an ANers wall, I think.  Well, a wall and some frames.  And it's being sold out of my hometown, where I went to high school.  Seven degrees of separation, indeed.

Englishmajor last night called Giambi "Graybeard."  I think this is an excellent nickname for him, and am using my DLD bully pulpit to throw my support behind it.

Jim Caple asks Greybeard some vapid questions.  My favorite moment of the filler piece?   "And you have to cut your hair and shave your face."

Apparently, Selugworth (thank you, MB) wants us to know that baseball cares that we'll all soon be living in houses made of slag and eating shoe leather.  Among the "values":

Pittsburgh Pirates Buc Night: A new promotion on April 15, where fans can purchase $1 seats, $1 hot dogs, $1 12-ounce Pepsi and $1 popcorn.

No word yet on whether fans will also be spared having to watch the Pirates.

So, we've won one and we've lost one.  And real baseball, whether I've got to listen to Vince screaming at me or asshat announcers from out-of-market via Comcast MLB Package, rocks.  I LOVE baseball.

Oh, and we all need to say a prayer for Roy.  According to the Chron:

STEELE SIDELINED: Roy Steele, the A's main public-address announcer since the team arrived in Oakland in 1968, is unlikely to handle PA duties the first month of the season because of poor health.

Like 67Marquez says, next to BK, Roy is the A's to me.  Get well, Roy.

(and even though we didn't need him last night, you too, Matt)

This is the part of the post where we dump!  Dump, Monkeys!

Philadelphia Inquirer story on South Jersey dude Andrew Bailey

Nothing too memorable, although it does mention that his parents flew out for opening night, so they were there for his ML debut.

BTW, Sean Doolittle grew up about 10 miles from Bailey.

Why are any of us awake now

And should it be Graybeard or Greybeard? I know I wrote GrAy last night but now I’m thinking GrEy looks, well, greyer.
I don’t function well on less than four hours of sleep. Time to head over to Starbucks. But first I need to add some personally selected links to this fine DLD.
San Jose Giants to be on TV although it’s on the Comcast Hometown Network which I’ve never heard of and I’m pretty sure I don’t get.
Marine Layer liveblogged last night’s San Jose City Council meeting. In a slightly related story, the East Bay Express looks at the Uptown Oakland housing development that used up some of the land that might have gone to a ballpark.
Larry Baer of the Gnats is on Forum today at 10 AM if you want to call in and ask him something about why his team sucks and Randy Johnson doesn’t wash his hair often enough.
The New York Times has a nice story about the Bemidji State hockey team. I’ve been to Bemidji. Go Beavers. The Times also has an article about new-style banh mi which includes a chef’s offhand remark:

"I could never get away with this in San Jose," said Mr. Hua, referring to the city with a large Vietnamese-American community in Northern California, where he grew up. "New York has a history of being open to creative ideas."
Oof! Which hurts worse, San Joseans, the diss of your creative acceptance or the fact that the NYT thinks its readers need to be told where your city is? Now I’m hungry and Starbucks doesn’t serve banh mi. Did I mention I don’t like getting up at 3 AM?

They also are the Fox Saturday games on 7/4 (@ Cleveland) and 7/18 ( vs. The ChiSox).

In case this has not been mentioned

The A’s home opener Friday night (as well as Monday’s game against Boston) will clash with Warrior home games. I have no link, just an e-mail from a friend:

The Golden State Warriors and Oakland A’s will each be hosting games on Friday, April 10, and Monday, April 13. Because the teams share parking lots, heavy traffic is to be expected.

Fans are asked to be aware of increased traffic and activity around ORACLE Arena and Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on each of those days. Both Warriors games begin at 7:30 p.m., while both A’s games begin at 7:05 p.m. Please plan on arriving at the arena earlier than normal if possible.

Oddly enough I saw the Giants both times. You going to Camden yards? We took in Citizen’s Bank on a trip to Baltimore to see the A’s, 45 minutes or so down the road. I liked PNC as ballpark, however the onfield product was less than exciting, not much of a crowd. Citizen’s has a good buzz going as Phily fans get riled up easily. Plus you get to see the Phanatic do his thing.

That's sad.

But they don’t say if the man was an A’s fan or Slegna fan.

Nope. I feared some Oakland bashing...

But no Green was involved, who knows what could have started it. Halos Heaven assumes it was a conflict of fans, but no reasons are known as of yet. Just a horrible thing to happen.

Enjoy the game

HH Comment says it was all Angels fans
My friend Julianne ( the girl in the skirt at tailgating ) saw the whole thing. Her and her friends saw it on the news and they asked for anyone with info to call, they did. She saw one guy say something to another guy, then that guy came up and punched him HARD in the face, the guy was already unconscious before he hit his head on the railing HARD. Then when he was down on not moving, another guy came and kept beating him. The dood that Julianne was with actually pulled the last guy off the beaten guy. Then they both left, and the other guy was just laying there in his own blood. They were all Angel fans at the Bud Area. She said it all took place in 20 seconds. F’n stupid.

Holliday not in tonight's starting lineup either

according to Slusser

Holliday told her he had the stomach flu, and while he’s not in the starting lineup he could be available to pinch hit.

She also posted the starting lineup, at least as of 3:39 PM:

Ryan Sweeney RF, Orlando Cabrera SS, Jason Giambi 1B, Eric Chavez 3B, Jack Cust DH, Kurt Suzuki C, Travis Buck LF, Mark Ellis 2B, Rajai Davis CF.

what the secret to a successful DLD LB?

I posted two last week because no one else would and I only got 51 comments each (a lot of which were mine). I posted tons of links but didn’t have much commentary, maybe that is why. Any tips?

Braves bullpen falters

They had a 10-3 lead in the 7th and then they gave up a 1 out single, hit ryan howard, then walk, single, single, walk, walk, walk, single, walk, and finally a rbi groundout. 8 runs with only 3 hits, none for extra bases. Then gave up another run the next inning and lost 12-11.

weird

But his last entry on his ESPN blog had something interesting about players who did nto do well in the minors

I’m in for half on Holliday. He struggled in his first high-A season and his first Double-A season, then struggled more in his second Double-A season … and yet, oddly enough, the Rockies promoted him to the majors early in his next season, even though he’d posted a career .750 OPS in Double-A and had played only a few Triple-A games. And you know what he has done since then.

the latest on Joey Devine

according to Slusser, Dr. Andrews wants to run a bone scan and a CT scan on Devine’s elbow. Apparently the MRI didn’t turn up anything major, which is good; at the same time we know from past experience (Dotel, for example) that sometimes serious problems don’t show up on an MRI. (Dr. Andrews was the surgeon who operated on Dotel and also on Tim Hudson.)

I think this will be my last DLD post today , sorry if over posted.

I wonder if the Novato Police ever have real police work to do? (although I probably shouldn’t complain about that huh?)

Novato CA Police log

5:53 a.m. A Lamont Avenue resident called police because three mirrors fell off the living room wall, and the resident thought that was suspicious.

11:13 a.m. Police caught two 13-year-old skateboarders who had spat on a window in the 1500 block of South Novato Boulevard. They apologized to the person who reported their spitting and were released to their guardians.

4:06 p.m. A resident of the 500 block of Entrada Drive reported that she had house cleaners come, and when she returned home her credit cards that she hides under a mattress were missing.

I was a kept man/drunkard for

a blistering hot summer in Pennsylvania, around Harrisburg. I grew up in Indiana, went to school in Muncie, til they threw my drunk ass out. I split to California, lived in CCC for about three years, relocated up north, lived in the North Bay for about fourteen years, moved to Chicago for grad school for about two years, went back to NorCal/NorBay (blew up my Honda just outside of Laramie, so I spent a week there—BTW, if anyone is ever tempted, towing a trailer behind a Honda from Chicago to California is NOT a good idea), thought seriously about relocating to Berkeley and buying season tickets for the rest of my life and being one of those old guys who has the hat full of pins and the walkman in his pocket and a cooler and a chair cushion, but FAILED to act upon instinct and wound up here in the ASSHOLE of hell, otherwise known as Florida.

Everywhere else, I’ve not lived there.

Colorado sportwriter says A's interested in Gaudin

at the big league level as a reliever

the Padres are reportedly also interested in him as a reliever.

The Rockies are interested in him as a starter, but he’d need to get stretched out at AAA, according to this same writer — who also thinks Gaudin is more interested in starting.
