CSN, DirecTV get A's on the air
http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_12078814 says:
A's look good tonight for DirecTV
The 11th-hour deal promised by all sides appears to be happening, and DirecTV will carry A's games on Comcast SportsNet California after all.
DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer said the "vast majority" of Bay Area subscribers would be able to see the season opener tonight against the Angels as negotiations wrap up to get CSN California carried on the same access tier as CSN Bay Area. (Check Channel 698 to make sure; that has always been a condition of agreement from CSN's side, but Mercer said only that "we're negotiating" Sunday night.
DirecTV is usually the domino that leads other providers into agreements, so the A's should have no distribution problems.
CSN California is Channel 89 on Comcast Cable and Channel 721 in high-definition. It is Channel 409 on Dish Network.

Of course
I can’t believe how much attention this got from AN. Of course they will agree to show A’s games. It’s all about the benjamins.
Male egos got in the way, and those can trump benjamins
I think it was a legitimate story and concern for DirecTV subscribers.

Is there anything particularly relevant about
the fact that the egos in this case were male? Are you suggesting that if any of the CEOs involved were female it would have gone differently?
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers."
I don't know - there have been so few test cases
But yes, I think the male and female egos are a bit different in general, just as testosterone (known to correlate with aggression) and estrogen are different. Of the last 130 CGV complaints on AN, 129 are against male users. My personal experiences in “the real world” with males in power has been consistent with my comment above. Boo testosterone!!!!

to be fair,
the male to female ratio around here’s a bit skewed, no?

Exactly
After what is happening in Portland with the Blazers, the A’s DirecTV scared the heck out of me.
Plus, DrecTV,and Dish, never agreed on the MLB Extra Innings package, so there was no
reason to think they wouldn’t screw this up too.

Um what?
If you faced the possibility of not being able to watch virtually any A’s games despite living less than 10 miles from the stadium due to the greed of corporate jerks, you’d give it attention to.

…placed by CSNCA listed both DirecTV and Dish as having the games…
But don't you know...

I just wish U-Verse would give me the damn HD Feed. :(

I'd appreciate any Direct TV subscriber out there who can answer this....
Assuming the A’s do get the deal worked out, is Channel 698 only available with the sports package (like I have now) or can I ditch the sports package (and thereby save $12/month) and still get 698.
Thanks in advance.

If you live in the Bay Area you shouldn't have to pay for it, it should be included. But...
if you live outside of Bay Area or California you’d have to pay for the Sports package. :D

Slusser: conflicting information
Susan Slusser says:
I’m getting conflicting information on the Comcast talks with DirecTV about airing A’s broadcasts on CSN California as part of basic-tier programming, like CSN Bay Area’s Giants broadcasts. Tonight’s broadcast from Anaheim is a go on DirecTV Channel 698, but considering that Comcast is offering its affiliates the first 25 games free, that’s not surprising.
Comcast is telling me that they believe a deal is in place as of this morning after productive talks over the weekend, while DirecTV said that the sides are “still in negotiations” but that most DirecTV customers in the Bay Area will receive tonight’s broadcast.
All parties (including the A’s) had anticipated that an agreement would come together at the last minute, and it appears that may be the case. It’s certainly in everyone’s best interest, judging by the volume of e-mails I’ve received on the topic, and I know the A’s and Comcast have been flooded, too.
by BillyWannabeane on Apr 6, 2009 11:04 AM PDT reply actions
The "volume of e-mails" that Slusser, the A's and Comcast have received
is nothing compared to what they’ll get if whatever agreement they have to show tonight’s game and possibly the first 25 games somehow falls apart and we get the dreaded blackout message on 698.
This from Comcast SportsNet today at 11:30 am:
<Thank you again for your feedback. Our impetus for moving the A’s to their own network on Comcast SportsNet California so A’s fans can enjoy more A’s coverage than when the A’s and Giants were both together on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. A’s fans this season will see 145 A’s games, the most ever televised in the team’s history, nearly two times as many games in HD, and the most extensive pre- and post-game coverage available anywhere.
We are happy to announce that tonight’s Opening Day telecast of the Oakand A’s vs. LA Angels will be available to DirecTV customers on Comcast SportsNet California channel 698. Further, fans in the Bay Area will be able to see the network on their Choice Level package, whereas Comcast SportsNet California has formerly been available on only the Sports Pack level to fans in that region.
Thanks, and go A’s.
Sincerely,
Marisa Veroneau

Ken Pries told me a while ago that Opening Day would be available on DTV and other networks.
I don’t know whether this email from Marisa states that Non-Opening day games (ie the rest of the season) will be available on Direct TV. I guess I’ll have to wait till tomorrow to find that out.

they are offering mlb extra innings for a week for free on direct tv
it says that blackouts apply in oakland for the a’s games,
is that just oakland or is that the entire bay area

Well, considering I get the Marlins games blacked out,
and they’re a good four hours away, I’m going with the latter.

no deal yet beyond this week
according to Slusser:
(04-07) 10:43 PDT ANAHEIM — Though CSNCA’s Opening Night telecast from Anaheim was shown as part of DirecTV’s basic-tier programming, DirecTV and CSN have not come to an agreement for the season. The A’s said they have received no indications that CSN and DirecTV have a deal in place beyond showing this week’s games. CSN is offering the first 25 games free, but DirecTV has not confirmed that it will air anything beyond this week

My Dad couldn't get the A's game on his Dish Network last night (lives In El Sobrante, CA)
I told him to turn to channel 409 but it said not available or something. I think he just has the basic package, does he need something else to watch the A’s this year?

Where is CSNCA+ on Cable
is it 410 ?

Anyone know..
what channel CSCA+ is tonight on DirecTv? Will it be available on the Choice Package? don’t want to miss Cahill’s debut!
698 & 698-1
you may have to go into your channel set up menu & manually add the channels before you can see them in the guide.
You can still just click 698.
698 is the normal CSNCA channel...
…tonight is on the alternate, because of exciting Kings hoops on 698. I think that this happens twice more, Thursday, and one of the Boston games, and then that’s it for the season.
(This is for DirecTV only).
Don't hold me to this, but I think...
…tonight is 652 for DirecTV. That’s the “RSN Alternate” listing that I found for tonight’s game (Kings hoops on 698 for DirectTV viewers).
It better be 652...
…that’s what the TIVO is set up to record.
and I dvr'd 410
I hope I get home in time to change it.
The menu information had our game on 4 or 5 channels

Bad news for The Dish
The Dish only carries games on CSNCA, not CSNCA+ or CSNCA-HD. Most of the A’s games will be broadcast on the latter two channels. Tonight, for example, it’s the NBA on CSNCA. The Dish says they hope CSNCA-HD will be available “soon,” but not tonight.

I have Dish and I watched on CSNCA-HD last night
Typically, a Dish HD sports channel says “available soon” until game time. If you have Dish, you need the Bay Area regional sports package to get CSNCA.
by BillyWannabeane on Apr 7, 2009 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
I am watching CSNCA+ on Dish channel 446...444 on 9th and 13th
like Slusser said…at least according to Dish’s guide. FWIW, one reply I got from Dish support indicated they didn’t know they even carried CSNCA. And their second reply entirely misunderstood my question. I have found Dish support frustratingly uninformed. Whereas the Comcast and A’s replies I got were coherent and thoughtful.

Roger that
The Dish network rep told me the A’s were not going to be on any channel. Thank goodness for Nate, who had better information than the Dish employee.

It shouldn't have been so hard.
It was right on the guide. I checked 409, saw it wasn’t there, skimmed through the alt channels which are the 440’s and 450’s and there it was.
No HD last two nights on Dish
…though the A’s did look pretty d**n good to me last night. :)

Still Blacked out in Northern Cali on DirecTV
I live in Humboldt County and cannot get any kind of concrete answer from either CSNCA or DirecTV as to why they are blacking the games out up here. They both blame each other.
Sounds like DirecTV
is very nervous about losing a lot of customers in the bay area en masse. So they give the game locally and black out other markets? Don’t know, just speculating.

blacked out in Northern california
I live in eureka, ca area and am blacked out, bad.. I talked to csnca they say direct tv is to blame, I talk to direct tv, they say the league is to blame. wtf!!!!
CSNCA's response to my question why Nor Cal can't get A's games on Directv
Hi,
I apologize for the confusion. While DirecTV has recognized the value of Comcast SportsNet California ’s A’s coverage in many parts of Northern California , unfortunately they have not included our A’s coverage in your community. We are presently negotiating with DirecTV to change that because like you, we want to make the A’s available to fans in your community.
You may wish to follow up with DirecTV to express your interest in getting the A’s on Comcast SportsNet California on your DirecTV line-up by emailing directvcustomercare@directv.com or calling 800-531-5000.
Sincerely,

No game in Eugene!
Still blocked out in Eugene. If I go to the Extra Innings game mix I can watch the Angels feed on a tiny screen, but everything else is blocked out. How come in the year 2009 I can not watch a game of a team 10 hours away?
