GOG 2009 #01

After an endless spring training, it's finally time to start playing games... and I have absolutely no idea of what's going to happen. But that's the beauty of the GOG. Make your uninformed guesses here so that I can grade you harshly!

Star-divide

There is no better way to kick off a season than to face the Angels, who will almost surely be the main competition for the AL West crown. (Well, I guess it would be better if we got to do it at home in Oakland.) Will this series even begin to answer all of the questions about the division?

...drum roll...

GOG #01 :: Starting Off With A Bang (42 points possible)

Four game series @LAA -- April 6-9
Update -- answers have been added below, in bold

  1. Series outcome? (4 game series) [3 points] 2-1 Oakland
  2. Dallas Braden, opening day starter?!? :: IP/ER/K? [2 points each] 6 IP / 3 ER / 3 K
  3. Four games down, 158 to go :: At the end of the series, what place is Oakland in for the AL West race? [3 points] 2nd place
  4. No more K-Rod :: Fuentes IP/K/SV [2 points each] 2 IP / 1 K / 1 SV
  5. Moneyball vs Smallball :: Which team draws more walks in the series? Which team steals more bases? [1 point for each correct answer, -1 point for each wrong answer] Angels had more SB and more BB
  6. A's-Angels games are close and low-scoring? With these pitching staffs?? :: How many total runs scored (by both teams) in the series? What is the run differential for the series? (i.e. Oakland +3 runs) [3 points each] 23 runs total, Oakland +1 (12-11 total score)
  7. Which team commits more errors in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Oakland committed more errors
  8. How many innings does the A's bullpen pitch in the series? [3 points] 9 IP
  9. Cabrera vs his old team :: H/R/RBI (for the whole series) [2 points each] 2 H / 0 R / 0 RBI

  11. Early Season Animosity :: How many HBP in the series? [3 points] 1 HBP (Giambi by Saunders)

The deadline for responses is opening pitch of game 1. Don't forget to make your predictions for GOG #00. Also, coming (hopefully) next week -- wisdom of crowds analysis of your predictions for 2009!

Results

It wasn't clear how to grade this one, due to the postponement of game four. I ended up just grading every question as it was written, which makes it impossible to get #1 right, and very hard to get some of the other right. After I finished grading, I noticed Jjjsixsix's useful comment below. I could regrade things using his guidelines, if people are strongly in favor of that. Poll added below.

Overall scoring statistics

  • mean = 6.29787 points
  • standard deviation = 3.21623 points

+11 run differential

with an odd run differential, the total number of runs in the series would always be odd

Of course, there’s no rule saying that GOG answers have to be consistent. You could just be hedging your bets…

I haven't decided

I’ll probably just round off the IP numbers, but I guess I might decide based on how easy the question turns out to be.

Maybe it would be a good idea to count partial innings for single game stats (i.e. how many innings Braden pitches), but then round off for larger numbers (like the number of inning thrown by the A’s bullpen in the series).

Well, I’m not going to commit yet.

you left something out from Cabrera’s line

If I don’t hear from you, I’m going to assume that you meant 0 hits, 2 runs, and made no guess for RBI.

colin-

i don’t know if you’ll come here, but i don’t know how you’ll deal with this.

my suggestions:
1. credit for either 2-2 or 3-1 A’s
2. fine
3. 2nd and only 2nd (with ties) because that’s where we would be in the end
4. ugh, no clue. good luck with that one.
5. fine
6. # * 3/4 and round? if you have it in a spreadsheet or SPSS or something, it’d be simple. else, obv not.
7. fine
8. # * 3/4 and round
9. same with 4, i might throw it out. o-cab sucked anyways.
10. whatever he had gets credit, whatever he had +1 gets credit? or toss it.
11. # * 3/4 and round

not that you have to take any suggestions, but just a way of coping.

thanks

I just ended up grading every question normally. So no one got the series outcome right, everyone guessed too many bullpen innings, etc. It’s harsh but fair, since it applies to everyone.

Sort of interesting, even though there were only three games, everyone still underestimated the number of at-bats for Nomar. Highest guess was 9, but he got 10 at-bats in three games.

by colin on Apr 10, 2009 5:49 AM PDT up reply actions

there will always be the risk of missing a game

due to weather. (hopefully not for the reason we missed this one.) whatever you do, it needs to be consistant throughout the season to cover any missed games.
