Patterson and Cameron called up to replace Nomar and Ellis
From Slusser:
"It's not official, and the players aren't actually even here at the stadium yet, but infielder Eric Patterson and reliever Kevin Cameron are joining the A's for tonight's game."

Who do you all expect to see up here? I’m guess that we’ll call up infielders, perhaps Pennington and Pettit. Does anyone know how Barton is doing in AAA?

sportwriters with the team have said that the A's
will call up one infielder and one reliever.
The infielder will need to play/backup second and third base, so that leaves out Barton (who by the way is hitting way below .200 in Sacramento). The choices are Pennington, Petit and Patterson. The first two are stronger defensively, while Patterson has been the hottest player offensively in Sacramento.
As for relievers, Blevins can bypass the 10 day time minimum for players recently sent down, due to the injury issue (unless they strictly go by positions). Some people have mentioned Gray and Schroeder, who have both pitched well in relief but haven’t been seen as real mlb prospects as far as i know.
I’ve read that the A’s prefer to let Mazzaro and Gio have a few more starts before considering a callup for them — and both, even Gio (who has some pen experience) are more thought of as starters.

I’d really like to see Wimberly get the call.

he'd have to be added to the 40 man roster for that
meaning someone else would have to be removed. I think it’s more likely that Pennington, Patterson, or Petit get called up…however, Wimberly could get moved to Sacramento.

They could transfer Copeland to the 60-day DL.

or Duchscherer, for that matter
I doubt they’d rush Wimberly up when they have 3 options already on the 40 man roster. They may want to showcase one of those three in case a trade opportunity comes up.
But I guess we’ll know soon enough today…

Personally, I’d rather have them call up Petit over Patterson or Pennington.

DL for both
04/29/09
Oakland Athletics placed 3B Nomar Garciaparra on the 15-Day disabled list. Strained right calf.
Oakland Athletics placed 2B Mark Ellis on the 15-Day disabled list. Strained left calf.
Maybe they can do something like they did with Cage and Travolta in Face Off?

Cameron has 13 strikeouts and 8 walks in 11 innings?
Jesus, does the kid have any clue where the ball is going?

I’m guessing Cameron was called up because he has the freshest arm. Both Gray and Schroder pitched yesterday.

right, they can certainly call him up for a short while
then send him down and call someone else up

plus having to clear a 40 man roster spot
just beause they pitched yesterday doesnt have to make this move more complicated
heck, blevins hasnt been horrible in AAA and w/ outman back to sp they could use another lefty
gray is on 40 man, schroder has been a bit better too

gaudin now says..
he was open to return to oakland, but they only offered him a relief role. now he pitches 5 shutout innings a a starter for padres. i’d much rather have gaudin than waste time w/ guys like cameron/giese when geren will either barely use them or pitch more than they should and mess up games

I would have liked to see the A's sign him
and get him in shape to start…if healthy he’s got a good arm.

60 day DL for copeland?
considering duke is about to start a throwing program would they shift him to 60 day DL
since A’s dont like him, maybe they DFA petit
i’m sure gray wouldnt mind a DFA, just to get out of this depth chart and get a chance

they just did
makes sense since he’s not going to be available for Oakland before June.
I don’t know if they’re allowed to put Copeland on the 60 day DL, since he’d be dropped from the 40 man roster, and he’s a Rule 5 pick.

I like that Patterson's been given a shot.
He’s raking in AAA so he deserves it. He must know it’s pretty much his last chance though.
