GOG 2009 #07
What a difference a couple of games can make! Yeah, any sort of true-talent estimator won't be especially impressed that the A's won two of three at home against Tampa Bay (of course, the same true-talent estimator also won't have given up on Matt Holliday ever hitting another home run), but my rollercoaster baseball emotions are quickly out of a deep valley. Braden is really pitching, the A's actually averaged a home run per game over a three game series, and I no longer feel like Geren is actively trying to sabotage the team (even if he persists in batting Sweeney and Cabrera 1-2).
So now that we've all got some good vibes flowing, here is a three game series against the Rangers that has the potential for the A's to both claim second place in the division and maybe even climb back to .500. Rejoice, for the end of April is nigh!
Oh yeah, I should say something about the Rangers too. Well, we all know this story. They have scored 116 runs this season to Oakland's 71. Their second baseman has as many home runs as the A's. And… their staff ERA slots in just below horrible at 5.99. The Rangers even called up much-hyped pitching prospect Derek Holland (grand total of one start in AAA) to try improve matters (he has pitched well in two ML starts, but the A's won't face him this series). Ok, enough about the Rangers, here's the GOG.

GOG #07 :: Clawing Our Way Out Of April (35 points possible)
Three game series @ Texas Rangers -- April 28-30
Update -- answers added below in bold
- Series outcome [3 points] 1-1 tie
- Same old Rangers hitting, same old Rangers pitching :: How many runs do Texas score in the series? How many runs do Oakland score? [3 points each] Texas scores 7 runs and gives up 8
- How many different third basemen do the A's use in the series? [3 points] A's use three third-basemen (Nomar, Crosby, and Hannahan)
- Our ace! :: Predict Braden's BB/K/ER [2 points each] 4 BB / 6 K / 0 ER!
- Long question alert!! So I was just reading this article over at Beyond the Box Score and evidently Gil Meche made a comment about the mound being a bit small at the Rangers home park. So the article-writing dude checked up on fastball velocities for pitchers who pitched at Arlington and elsewhere. He found that, with the exception of Fausto Carmona, pitchers do see their average and maximum fastball velocity dip a little. Does this trend hold for the Oakland starters? More specifically, do Anderson, Cahill, and Braden all see their average fastball velocity dip below their 2009 averages? (for plots of pitch speeds in their previous starts, click here, here, and here) [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] No Pitch-fx data for Anderson, for some reason, but the average velocity on Braden's 4-seamer was a full 1 mph below his 2009 average, so the answer is yes
- Ian Kinsler -- Really really good, or just really good? Predict his H/D(oubles)/HR [2 points each] 1 H / 0 D / 0 HR
- Holliday hits his first HR in an Oakland uniform off of a) Millwood b) Padilla c) Feldman d) Rangers bullpen e) no home runs [3 points] d) Holliday hit his first HR off the Rangers pen (Jason Jennings)
- Can you spell Saltalamacchia? Just kidding, that's not the real question. The real question is :: How many hits does he get in the series? [3 points] 1 hit
- Shortstops old and new :: Does Elvis Andrus or O-Cab get on base more times in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Cabrera
- Does Andruw Jones play in the series? Does he get a hit? [+1 for each right answer, -1 for each wrong] Jones played and got one hit (you didn't need to guess how many, just whether or not he got any hits)
- Wash v. Geren in a strategic duel :: Which manager makes more mid-inning calls to the bullpen? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] Wash made more mid-inning pitching changes
Ok, your answers are all due by first pitch time, which is only seven hours from now! To make up for posting this GOG late, I can offer you the fact that I have already posted scores and stats for the last GOG.
Results
A postponed game means that scores were indeed low, but not by as much as I was expecting. Also, make sure to check out the histogram, because this one was just a nice, fat bell curve and totally justifies me describing the distribution by just a mean and standard deviation.
Overall scoring statistics
- mean = 5.97368 points
- standard deviation = 3.08866 points
- mode = 6 points
Your scores
Nice work by crb29 and zaniac75, who tied for first place on this one. Also, zaniac75 seems to be running away with the season lead. For the lead by AVG category, I'm going to add a minimum number of GOGs requirement soon, but I haven't gotten around to it. Then zaniac75 will probably lead that category too. This GOG was graced by celebrity as baseballgirl joined in for her first time, and did very well. My next goal is to get Keith Law to play.

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

another game postponed
sigh…
In case anyone is curious, I’m just going to grade this DLD exactly as written (same thing I did for the series @ LAA to start the season). So your score will get screwed, but we will all be screwed equally. The reason why I tried to get people to update their answers for the Yankees series is because game 1 was announced to be postponed before the deadline for submitting entries had rolled around. In that case, I didn’t want the people who procrastinated on their entries to get a big advantage over the ones who posted early.
