Does anyone thin Geren will be on the hot seat??

I was wondering if Bob Geren will have to worry about his job security if the team continues to struggle?

I did read Moneyball and know that the 'importance of the Manager' was not rated that high according to the author's perception of Beane. Yes, I also know that he received a contract extension. Furthermore, I understand that he is friends with Beane.

All of that being said. He did take over a playoff team that had several winning seasons and has had 2 straight losing ones. This fact would usually have meant the loss of his job in many cities.

This post is not meant to argue in favor or against changing the manager. I am merely asking IF the team has a bad year will he start to get more and more of the blame? If the team struggles and underperforms will the stress start to build on him? Would the owner panic if the team is in the cellar in June?

Just wondering what the fans thought about Geren's job security.

I, too, have generally supported Geren...

I, too, am starting to rethink my position. The guy seems clueless this year.

Of course, that could be because nobody on the team besides Cust and Suzuki can hit. So, maybe it’s Billy’s fault. I’m willing to consider that as a possibility.

On paper the roster is much better than last year's team, at least offensively

But I don’t understand what he’s thinking with the way Buck and Gallagher haven’t been used, and now Gallagher’s down in Sacramento.

Some of it goes back to who puts the roster together but I’m losing a lot of patience with Geren’s lineups and use of the bullpen.

I am definitely with you on the lineups bit. The two guys with the highest on-base percentage were hitting right before the bottom of the order tonight.

Miller Huggins

couldn’t win with this team. Chavez and Crosby are well below replacement level players and are getting major at bats. Hannahan was hitting .130 in Triple A and was called up. This says it all.

I agree that Geren hasn’t distinguised himself though. Allowing Buck to rot on the bench is perplexing.

by DKNJ on Apr 24, 2009 8:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I was never all that impressed with Geren

When the players perform, it’s hard for a manager to screw up, but when the team is struggling every little thing becomes much more magnitized. I think the way he has handled things — line-ups, playing Davis, Powell at 1B, CROSBY at 1B, instead of Buck, and the killing/overmanaging of his bullpen (do we really need a situational lefty when we’re down 3 in the 6th?) make the A’s incredibly hard to watch.

I’m also afraid his rope will be way too long. If the A’s don’t turn it around soon, and Geren keeps making irrational decisions, I think something will need to be done. Either get a different hitting coach or replace Geren (no idea with who). I think he needs to be given until mid-May, and if it’s still bad by then, Beane needs to look into doing something. Bad starts are understandable, but a bad month and a half, full of bad decisions and unexplainably bad hitting, would be too much to take, especially in a winnable AL West.

No, not at all.

What’s more disturbing is that Billy Beane seems off his game. After all, none of these personnel decisions are actually Bob Geren’s. I’m not sure Beane cares very much anymore.

I'm not so sure.

I mean, I just don’t see Beane making all the moves he did this off season if he didn’t care. He’d just sit back and let the kids develop, I think.

Over the years I have had this rough general theory that it’s far easier to build a team than it is to maintain a good team or even re-build a team… if that makes any sense… and Beane’s record isn’t doing anything to disprove that theory.

Just a theory, mind you, and as with any theory your mileage may vary.

Beane

Beane obviously has to take some of the blame but Beane isn’t the one continually batting Giambi and Nomar above Cust and Beane isn’t the one continually misusing Buck and choosing Crosby and Powell over Buck.

by DeJay on Apr 25, 2009 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a weird but consistent pattern on this forum

that whenever anyone fails at something it is assumed that they don’t care. Holliday isn’t hitting because he doesn’t care. Geren makes bad decisions because he doesn’t care. Billy Beane’s transactions don’t work out because he doesn’t care.

Is it really so hard to believe that someone does care, does try hard, but makes mistakes or slumps nonetheless?

A fire needs to be lit

This team seems lifeless. I highly doubt Bob will go anywhere as he seems to be given a little extra rope due to his personal friendship with Billy.

But something needs to be done. Not quite sure, maybe they cut Crosby, make a trade, sign a veteran starter.

The organization really needs to take a look at why the team consistently not only underperforms in April, but appears dead doing it. Following the longest spring training in history, the A’s have opened the season looking unprepared and uninspired.

are we forgeting injuries?

Geren doesn’t have his corner infielders. Garciaparra can’t play, chavez has had his problems and Giambi can’t play first everyday.

How do you manage that? he has HAD to play Powell and Crosby at positions they aren’t used to. I don’t see how this is Gerens fault. The front office should have made a move a week ago.

and the Gallagher thing, it’s not difficult to see why Geren lost trust in him, and again the front office should have made the move a week ago…

I’m not a big fan of Geren, but so far this season it’s been all “worst case scenario”.

Sadly, I don't think his job is in any jeopardy at this point.

To be fair, I have to admit I’ve never been fond of Geren as the A’s manager, but I always thought he’d do at least a competent job and wasn’t completely down on him either. I had initial bias because his hiring stunk of nepotism, and because I really thought Ron Washington would’ve been great for the job and should’ve been Macha’s successor.

In the past couple seasons, there hasn’t been overly much to fault about Geren’s management of the team. Ok, there were plenty of questionable game-management decisions, but that would be the case with any manager.

The thing that has concerned me the most about Geren is the less obvious stuff, like how we works with his coaches and with the players- does the team have a cohesive feel to it? Are the players motivated and does everybody seem to be on the same page? Are personality issues handled well enough that we never hear much about them as fans?

It takes time for patterns to emerge, just like it takes time for a manager to establish himself and create a clubhouse culture and all that; we’re now at the point where it’s fair to look at Geren’s tenure and make some judgments.

I don’t like what I’m seeing.

There’s a definite pattern of marginalization of players that he can’t connect with or get to follow his lead emerging; I firmly believe that’s why Carlos Gonzalez was traded away (there were incidents at the end of last season that became pretty telling) and I suspect that’s why Buck has been riding the pine and why Gallagher was left to rust in the ‘pen pretty much since the season’s start as well. Those are just some most glaring examples- I suspect there is much more little stuff along these lines going on behind the scenes with other players, too.

Aside from that, there’s the fact that players and even coaches are fully aware that Beane and Geren are best buddies, and I doubt there is any trust between the players and manager because of this. You can’t talk to the manager openly if he’s going to report everything to the GM and part-owner of the team, can you? Coaches can’t question Bob’s decisions even if they think it would be constructive, because it could mean their jobs.

Then there’s the managerial disposition and personality issue. Geren likes to come across as a relentlessly positive, sunny guy- but this is diametrically opposed to what he actually projects with his body language and general demeanor, so it rings false. What he actually projects is a very controlling and taciturn, and at times short-tempered and gloomy, disposition. This has nothing to do with whether or not he’s a good guy in general, and is no reflection of him personally- but the temperament displayed by a manager has an impact on the team, and if it doesn’t ring true… well, it’s hard to be a convincing leader and build a cohesive team if nobody buys into what you’re selling.

I don’t think Geren is in a good position with this team, which seems terribly ironic- you would think it couldn’t get any better than being on great terms with the GM if you’re a manager, yet the converse could actually be more correct because if you’re too close with the front office then it’s hard to genuinely connect with the coaches and players.

Or maybe I’m saying I don’t think this team is in a good position with Geren.

Either way, he’s not going anywhere anytime soon, but that might cost the A’s a chance at contending in a wide-open A.L. West this year and farther down the road it may also cost them the chance to build a young, cohesive team that can compete for championships for several years in a row like they’ve seemingly been aiming to do through their rebuilding efforts.

I cannot disagree with anything you said here.

While I do think there is alot of conjecture here, I think you’re going in the right direction.

What I’m starting to wonder is… how bad would it have to get before Beane would fire his friend?

Side thought: If the manager is NOT all-inportant, as Beane seems to have implied in the past, isn’t the poor performance thus a poor reflection him Beane himself?

I absolutely agree there is plenty of conjecture in what I wrote, and I hope I couched it

sufficiently as being in that realm- but if not, allow me to concur with you on that here to make it clear.

The problem, of course, is that from a fan perspective all we can really do is hazard guesses based on what we observe and form opinions based upon what becomes public knowledge through reporting and what we ourselves perceive through direct observation.

At any rate, we’re not the arbiters of Geren’s destiny as manager of the A’s- that’s for the front office and ownership to decide, and they have much more information and direct observation to work from than any of us, obviously.

As to your questions-

1. I think Geren gets at least the rest of this season to manage the team, and probably well beyond that before Beane would “reassign” Geren to “a different role” or do something of that nature

2. I don’t think Beane really believes that the manager is irrelevant, and if he did think so at one time in the past (Moneyball being several years old now) I suspect further experience has probably softened that opinion a bit (or he wouldn’t have canned Macha and been so determined to put a like-minded Geren in the role who he could feel confident would make him proud in the dugout.)

3. To address the other part of your second question- I think the moves the front office made to assemble the current team are plenty suspect, and some of their roster decisions haven’t been anything besides puzzling to many over the past couple years, frankly. I don’t think Geren or the players themselves shoulder all the responsibility for how the team has played so far this year- I think the front office has plenty of culpability as well. Take third base, just as an example- is it really sound logic to expect Chavez and Nomar to platoon there all year successfully? Is it really sound thinking to count on those two, considering their injury history, at all? Where is the proactive effort to get a real replacement for third base in case Chavez is really done and because Nomar will ultimately spend more time hurt this year than playing if past history is any reasonable predictor of future health/performance? I love both those players, have for years- but I sure wouldn’t count on either to be a major contributor in 2009 or even stay on the field much.

Can we please play out April?

declaring Chavez done after two weeks is premature, we all knew going into this season that it was going to take time for him to be back to normal. If he’s still playing like this in June, fine, we can start talking about him being done but come on, it’s too early for that now.

I know everyone is frustrated with that last road trip, but that was what, 6 lefties in a row? we got a righty tonight and we beat him.

And do you really think Billie Beane would hesitate to fire Geren if it was the best thing for the team? Really? then you and I have totally different perceptions of him…

around here these days. I for one don’t doubt Mr. Beane’s ego for a minute. I think he’d fire his own mother if the choice was between him looking bad or appearing incompetent. Also, I think I’ll wait and see the body before I declare Giambi’s career dead.

Considering how little Chavez has played the last two years,

and considering how many lefties the A’s have faced, it’s definitely premature to write Chavy off based on his first 30 ABs. The wincing when he throw the first on Friday concerns me, but if he’s healthy I believe Chavez has something left as a hitter.

Geren only a smalll part of the problem

Still Bill – great posts above. If there is a claim against Geren aside from the strange lineups, it’s how he interacts as a leader with his players, coaches and superiors.

That said, the division is there for the taking this year. The Angels are dealing with big injury problems and a depleted pitching staff. The Rangers absolutely can’t pitch, although they can definitely hit. The M’s are probably playing above their heads at the moment (I’m pretty sure Russell Branyan will not hit .350 in 2009), and actually come close to mirroring the A’s futility in some offensive categories.

There are a few glaring problems with this team. One is the youth/ability/injuries of the pitching staff. So, far the starters have not been that good while the bullpen has been very sharp. But how long can a bullpen go on pitching 4+ innings every day? Given the fact that the ERA is under 4 and the A’s are above average on the mound, I would give Geren a PLUS for the performance of the staff. I think he’s done well with what he’s had to work with.

The offense has been atrocious, to say the least. The A’s rank near the bottom in just about every major offensive category. The slugging percentage of .311 is just horrifying, and doesn’t even approach the next-worst Mariners at .361. Building a team that doesn’t shape up well against lefties doesn’t bode well for winning 85+ games, as teams will always make sure they throw their southpaws against you. I don’t think the manager has a big enough impact to keep stars like Holliday, Giambi, etc. from hitting dingers. This is just a duplication of last year’s offense (except worse) so far, and that’s more of a reflection on Beane than anyone else.

I was against the Holliday trade when it was made, because this team should be very competitive 2 years from now. I figured Holliday’s stats would drop significantly in Oakland, thus diminishing what he could bring in a trade later this year. Plus, if he gets injured in June/July, we are screwed. I would have loved to see those 3 guys (Street, Smith, CarGon) dealt for a good young player whom we would have controlled for the next few years.

My big complaint is, I think the starting staff is not ready to contend (even with healthy Duke) and the lineup is proving very weak. I would have preferred the A’s to concentrate on building for 2011 rather than putting this mediocre #!&$# on the field, and trying to win this year. I know it’s still very possible, but I think this would have been an even better team down the road if we were in total rebuilding mode now. And that falls on Beane, not Geren.

add to above post

Also, (and it’s been said before) Geren led this team to a good record in the 1st half last year with minimal talent before the rug was pulled out from under him. I’m not saying the decision to fold in ‘08 was wrong, but I think he’s shown that he is capable of producing with less-than-stellar talent.

by Athletic Supporter on Apr 27, 2009 1:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I remember reading an interview at the time

(not sure if it was with Beane or Forst) that they considered that the first few months of last season the schedule was weak, and that they didn’t think that the A’s would be competitive in the second half so when certain trade possibilities came up they decided to go for it. I have no idea whether Geren was kept informed of that thinking.

by OaklandSi on Apr 27, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I said this at the Time of Geren's hiring

But there is a huge problem with hiring your best friend to be an employee (particuarly a very important employee), Bob Geren is no longer (or shouldn’t be) Billy Beane’s best friend. He has to be now considered an employee and Billy has to totally detach himself from any friendship he has with Geren and be wiling to fire Geren if it becomes necessary, even if it damages their friendship. This is an extremely difficult thing to do, especially if the employee is your best friend. I said it at the time of the hire and I’ll say it again, I thought this was a pretty sketchy hire. Having the GM and Manager be best friends makes for a very difficult working relationship. Is Geren really going to be willing to tell Billy what he thinks (if he thinks Billy is wrong)? Do the players believe that Geren won’t tell Beane whatever they say to Bob Geren the manager?

No way Geren gets canned no matter how bad a job he does. As long as Billy Beane is the GM these two are a pair. Why do you think the A’s have no actual manager with experience? A veteran manager is going to run the clubhouse as he sees fit and with the current management thats not going to happen.

Geren is the kool-aid and we've all been drinking it for too long.

Jack Nicholson once proclaimed “This town needs an enema!”
Was he referring to: a) Oakland, b) the A’s, or c) Bob Geren.

The answer d) all of the above!
