Convert Eveland and Outman into relief pitchers now
Would anybody else like to see the A's send Eveland and Outman to the pen? Both guys have a better chance to be excellent throwing just 2-3 innings. The A's need LH relievers. I've seen enough of them starting games. Better options Mazzaro, Gio, Gallager, Duchsecher hopefully soon . . .somebody with a future as a starter or even an old vet like Pedro.
Sucks that Angels are off to slow start and A's can't capitalize at plate or mound.

Outman yes. Eveland is the best bet to eat innings in the rotation.
You’ve got three rookies in the rotation — Cahill, Anderson and one of Gio or Mazzaro if you move Outman to the pen. You can’t plan to get more than 170 IP out of these guys.
You need someone to eat innings Eveland threw 189 IP last year between AAA and MLB. He’s a better bet than Gallagher to eat innings. Gallagher did go on the DL last year for a shoulder problem.
Sure if Eveland sucks for the first 10 starts or so you could move him down, but I’d move him off the roster before I moved him to the pen. I’m not sure he has a great out pitch to succeed in the pen, nor does he have great control.

Eveland has been so bad thus far
If he has one more start like the first three, he needs to be sent to AAA. Eating up innings is only a good thing when he not getting torched doing it. So far the only thing he looks like he is eating is the Buffet before and after each game.

Can he be sent down w/o passing through waivers?
Hasn’t Eveland used 3 options already? NSJ?

Eveland didn't use an option last year...
He had one remaining, and he was sent down…but he was sent down for less than 20 days, preserving the option.
He could be sent down again, if necessary. Good planning by the A’s organization to preserve that last year.
Sorry for the delayed reply, C Fan…work has me swamped lately and I don’t have the opportunity to read every thread anymore. Hope all is well, I always enjoy your posts.

The FIP of 3.85 and tRA of 3.58 don't support your position.
He’s been unlucky not bad. That’s not to say he can’t be bad later.
FIP:
Eveland — 3.85
Braden — 4.32
Cahill — 5.25
Anderson — 5.89
Outman — 6.62
tRA:
Eveland — 3.58
Braden — 4.43
Anderson — 4.45
Cahill — 6.90
Outman — 9.24

I was caterwaluling about this in a different thread, but
Eveland’s FIP and tRA are slightly ridiculous. It’s only because he hasn’t given up any home runs in the miniscule amount of innings he’s thrown. The HR weights in those stats are huge – and are only further amplified in small samples. Eveland’s WPA/LI is -.5 and Braden is +.2, which is a safer reflection of reality considering the sample size.
Eveland should definitely be starting, mind you, but he’s not some secret statistical gem that should be making our heads explode with magical math.

Yeah Eveland is more of a 4th or 5th starter
than a bullpen arm

Agree. Outman could be a far better reliever than he is a starter
Eveland is best served starting, where at least he can provide innings at the back of a rotation. I see him as a #5, though, which makes him totally replaceable – but I see him as a “basically replacement level starter,” not as a particularly useful reliever.

Your replacement level is very high then, if a 2.7 WAR pitcher qualifies.
The projection systems see him as averagish not replacement level. Replacement level is Edgar Gonzalez. Your bias and/or emotion is showing.

I agree
There seems to be a massive gulf between perception and reality when people talk about 4th/5th SP.

I see #4 and #5 as being distinctly different,
in that a #4 starter is pushing towards being a #3 while a #5 starter is pushing towards being dumped (a “#6”). Kind of like there’s 4+ and 5- and nothing in between.

Gallagher
Should be in the rotation. The A’s need another righty until Duke ids back. Having 4 lefties hurt the team in matchups with the yanks who kill lefties.

What about matchups with teams that kill righties?
I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.

Do you mean you're actually suggesting that Gallagher pitch on a more regular basis than he is now?!?!
Next you’ll be proposing that Buck should be in the line up!
I was going to buy a copy of The Power of Positive Thinking, and then I thought: "What the hell good would that do?"

I would never say that
Why would I want Buck to face lefties when in 2007 he hit lefties and had more power against lefties than righties. I would never say that Geren doesn’t know his own player and what is good for the team.

I'm really fed up with this whole situation. I mean at least tell us why Gallagher
is not pitching!?! WE deserve an explanation. Is he going to the rotation, going to be optioned, or is he hurt? What!!!!?!!!!?!! What’s in Geren’s mind anyway!?!
He hasn’t pitched in over a week! I need answers! NOW!!!

the A's are secretly hoping
gio/gallagher get their stuff right and help at some point. both came over in major deals w/ sparkling minor league track records at age 22/23. both were considered workhorses, no injury issues, and at least good bets to be 2/3 types eventually. instead both have had injury issues which has stalled progress and very worrisome control issues. they were the reasons A’s were willing to trade the injury prone harden and the known mediocrity of blanton. plus later the reasons why even anderson/cahill were rushed a bit. i ‘m not a big eveland fan, but he is a 5th starter unfortunately he’s expected of more than that and he’s not providing it thus far.

Eveland is not alone...
…in being a 5th starter. At the present time the ENTIRE ROTATION is nothing but 5th starters, and almost all of them would be better served honing their craft in AAA at Raley Field. The only pitcher on our staff who can claim to have more than MLB 5th starter ability at the present time (not talking about the future) is Duchschchshschshchshsherizer, who has what, half a season of effective MLB starts under his belt? How sad. With the current rotation, we are more in contention for last than we are for first. I want this team to win with every fiber of my being, but I cannot help but think we would be better served by sending the rest of MAC back to SAC where they can learn not just to get by but to DOMINATE. Holliday should be swapped for prospects that can help us in ‘10, not sat on for draft picks that “might” help us in ’13. Everyone who thinks we signed the ’02 versions of Giambi, Nomar, and OC is gonna be disappointed. These guys are all on their last legs…and here we are depending on them to be major cogs in the machine! We have precisely ONE player -Suzuki-who is above average offensively at his position (of course, I’m not counting Holliday, who is a three-month rental), and our defense is spotty. We have a ton of guys hurt and more piling up every day. The lone bright spot has been the bullpen, but at this rate, they’ll be toast by Memorial Day. I would love to see playoff baseball in the East Bay again too, but this group has an awfully long way to go to get there…maybe I am just venting some of the frustraion we must all be feeling. I feel much better now. Thanks and God Bless.
P.S. Maybe it’s time Geren gets the axe, whaddya think? :-)
