What's the deal with the 9th inning bunt attempt?
Okay, did Geren & Co. really give Cabrera the sign to attempt a bunt in the 9th inning last night- or did he do it on his own? It was probably one of the worst bunt attempts I've ever seen and I was literally stunned that they would try such a bonehead move. And why can't a veteran like Cabrera lay down a bunt? It has puzzled me for years how the A's have been unable to execute bunts. Is there such thing as a bunt clinic? If so, it's time to bring in the bunt gurus and go for it.
As bad as it sounds, I was almost wishing they would pinch hit Bobby Crosby for Cabrera last night in the 9th-----almost.

dumb time to bunt
that’s for sure. I can’t imagine that was called from the bench.

I doubt that was called from the bench
I wonder if the one in the first (?) inning was called from the bench too. I think he realizes that he’s slumping and trying to do anything to get on base

We have no way of knowing for sure
unless, of course, Geren ends up telling us … but I felt like the bunt attempt in the 1st was Cabrera’s decision, too.
I agree, however, that not being able to get a bunt down is inexcusable. I’m not a “National League guy”, but there are times when a bunt is a good idea. Unfortunately, the A’s have one helluva time pulling it off. There are two things — fundamental things that should be fairly “automatic” — that the A’s are horrible at, year after year. One — bringing in a runner from third with less than two outs. Two – laying down a bunt.
It boggles the mind when millionaire MLB-caliber baseball players can’t lay down a bunt. These are the best baseball players in the world — most of them have been eating, drinking, and sleeping baseball for many years — and they can’t stick the bat out and let the baseball hit it?! Unbelievable. There is absolutely no reason why anybody in the lineup should not be able to lay down a bunt whenever asked. No excuse.
I needed a team so I wouldn’t turn into one of the eighty million pink hat-wearing Bud Light-drinking mulleted idiots at Fenway.

Rajai Davis should be a great bunter
…but he’s not. A perfect example of someone not availing themselves in a department that would benefit their skillset (speed).
