Prospect Status - April 22nd

    I have decided to dig out the Top 50 Prospect Chart we all made during the off season, wipe the dust off it, and put it to use. I will use the list to keep track of our minor leaguer's performances through out the season. Every couple weeks  I'll post the list again, with the updated line. That way, we can see how well we chose our prospect list.
    Key:
    Letter Grade = John Sickels Letter Grade
    BA# = Baseball America Top A's Ranking
    Mi# = Minor League Ball Community Prospect List Rank
    BP# = Baseball Prospectus Top A's Rank
    #X = Baseball Prospects Star Grade
    S# = Scout.com's Top A's List

    SC = StatsCorner
    FG = FanGraphs

    NOTE: FIP or wOBA stat will be placed for the level the prospect spent the most time at. FIP will be used for Pitchers, wOBA for Hitters. .000 or 0.00 indicates that the stat is unavailable.

    Format: Place. [StatsCorner] [Fan Graphs] [2008 FIP/wOBA] [Player] [Level] [2009 FIP/wOBA] [UP/DOWN (from last post)]

  50. [SC] [FG] [4.02] Ryan Webb, RHP [AAA] [6.97]

As you can see, quite a few players on the list have yet to play this year, for a variety of reasons. Most are in Extended Spring Training, either fixing their swing or motion, or recovering from injuries. Others, like Michael Ynoa and Robin Rosario, have yet to arrive from the Dominican Republic. Others, such as Rashun Dixon and Nino Leyja, are being held back till Short Season starts in Vancouver, or at least until Kane County warms up above 35 degrees.

The entire list suffers from Small Sample Size Syndrome, so take all those numbers with a grain of salt. Just as Craig Italiano will not likely end up with a 5.38 FIP, Adrian Cardenas will not likely maintain a wOBA close to .500.

Matt Sulentic played in AA

He made his first start today in AA and went 0-4.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Looks like you're getting wOBA from Fangraphs not Stat Corner

Zonis, would it be useful to add PA and IP or is that too much of a pain and/or not very important?

I was actually thinking of adding that

probably next time.

It’s good to keep an eye on the young ones.

Looks like pretty much all of our top pitchers

With the exception of Simmons are struggling. Cahill, Anderson, Gio, Mazzaro, Outman, Hunter, Ross, etc… all have high FIPs. Not a good April to be a pitcher in this system I suppose.

Anderson

Anderson has a 4.10 FIP at age 21 in the majors. He’s not setting the world alight but it is still pretty good – I wouldn’t call that struggling. Mazzaro isn’t doing too badly either.

Of course

Well that obviously isn’t so great but I suppose giving up 3 homeruns will do that

It'd be nice

to see Buck hit right now. Is Chavez unavailable or something?

Gregorio Petit

Petit is in MLB? Is that a typo or did I miss a call-up?

Im looking forward to follwoing...

Shawn Haviland and Anthony Capra in Kane County this year. Both throwing very well so far. Haviland went 6IP 2H 2ER 1BBs 7Ks so far and has walked two batters in 17 innings while striking out 19.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

Haviland is an interesting guy

Not many 33rd round picks out of Harvard do much in the pro’s, but he’s off to a good start. Another interesting guy is Ben Hornbeck who was picked right before Haviland in the 32nd. These were the last two guys picked to actually sign with the A’s last year.

Hornbeck is a 6’ 5" lefty pitcher from Kansas State. He only has 10 IP in Kane County so far but he has only given up 1H, 1BB and has 13 K’s. He struck out 45 in 35 IP between Vancouver and Kane County last year but walked 19. I don’t know anything about what he throws but he seems worth keeping an eye on.
