Why not show recently commented FanPosts on home page?
FanPosts are not working the way they need to IMO. If a FanPost was started more than 36 hours ago, it typically gets pushed off the front page even if people have commented on it recently. I think if a FanPost gets commented on, it should bubble to the top of the FanPosts on the front page.
A good example is skigurl's "The latest on CSN-CA/DirecTV/Dish" FanPost, which was started even though some of us commented a few hours ago with similar comments in the "no A's games on Dishnetwork?" FanPost. skigurl did the right thing by starting a new FanPost since the issue of Dish/DirecTV subscribers ability to receive A's games is a critical issue (for some of us). But we shouldn't need to start a new FanPost every 36 hours to keep this issue alive.
Why don't recently commented on FanPosts appear on the AthleticsNation home page? It feels like we are indirectly discouraging lengthy discussions by giving preference to recently started FanPosts over recently commented FanPosts.

have to get rec'd in order to keep them up top
My beef is all the one liner fanposts that are redudantly added or which should just be dld’d or fanshots instead. there used to be a better sense of etiquette on here in that regard.

The one-liner fanposts would cease if...
…more people actually paid attention to fanshots. It seems like 90%+ of people ignore them completely.
I find this unfortunate. Quite often there are things that could be brought up and start a good conversation that doesn’t require a whole essay to start, just a simple question or comment, and while I like the idea of separating fanposts and fanshots it just doesn’t seem to be working as well as designed.
I don’t do one-liner fanposts because of the etiquette thing, but I do sometimes feel left out because of what I mentioned above. I have a quick comment or question but don’t bother with a fanshot either because it just seems a waste of time. It’s like it’s all-or-nothing and the middle has been lost.

I read on a laptop
I need to remember to cruise down to fanshots. I think fanposts and fanshots should appear together where fanposts currently do. Distinguish them in some way. That would also alleviate the problem of people posting fanshots and putting in garbage copy to meet the length requirement because they expect fanshots to get little or no attention.

Would it be possible to use the same space, but add tabs for each type?
Kind of like the Narrow/Wide view tabs at the left side of the screen, but In this case clicking on one of them will display Fanposts, clicking on the other tab will display Fanshots. Both would use the same segment of the screen, but what gets displayed in that segment would depend on which tab is selected.
I know that I, for one, don’t usually look at fanshots because I usually forget they exist. This would place both in an easy-to-see place while avoiding further clutter of the front page.
Does that make sense to anyone else?

We want FanPosts! We want FanPosts!
I counted 100 articles on the Athletics Nation home page. Many of these articles are quite old (that said, I think we should leave the old interviews of Beane, Wolff etc).
There are only 21 comments on all of the FanShots on the home page. Some FanShots are almost 2 weeks old. If there is little or no interest in the FanShots (which are supposed to be videos), why give them as much space as the FanPosts? We should cut the number of FanShots by 40% on the home page, double the number of FanPosts, and bubble recently commented items to the top.

Quick note
My Dashboard —> Edit Settings —> Number of recent FanPosts to display.
I changed my FanPosts to 20 and my FanShots to 10, whereas they were both 15 before.

The problem is that 95% of the ANers will have that set to 10 and never see your comments. And of those 95% of ANers, only 5% will go to the FanPosts Archive. So you can comment on FanPosts that were started more than 36 hours ago, but few people will see the comments.
The best solution is to bubble up FanPosts that were recent commented on to the home page. And, by default, everybody should see more than 10 FanPosts.

Recently commented FanPosts should be at the top
For any FanPost started more than 3 days ago (like “no A’s games on Dishnetwork?”), you (and everybody else) would have to show 50 FanPosts on their home pages. 50 is entirely too many FanPosts to look at to decide if something has been commented on. I have started showing 50 FanPosts, but I am not happy about having to work around the design that says “new FanPosts are given preferential treatment to recently commented FanPosts”.
Maybe we could also have a Hot FanPosts section which collects the most commented on FanPosts over the last week. This would be the last week’s list:
Gallagher Out Of The Rotation? 163 comments
Any interest in Sheffield? 65 comments
Roster Headaches Coming Soon? 136 comments
AN Seeking Additional CGV Committee Members 87 comments
What are your thoughts on the starting rotation? 74 comments
GOG 2009 #00 88 comments
Opening Day 25 Man Roster Predictions 105 comments
DLD (3/26/09): Duke feels pain in minor league start 160 comments
Anderson Eyeing Starting Rotation (Game Recap) 82 comments
DLD 3.25.09 My Blog, Right or Wrong 76 comments
The above topics seem slightly more interesting than the Recommended FanPosts:
DLD – 4/2/09 – Devine done?
Jack Hannahan To Have Head Removed
DLD (4/1/09): Nico is Famous
What I Fear: Beane’s Self-Imposed Trap
DLD 3/31/09 Baseball is almost here! But until then . . .

DLDs always go to the recommended list
People have suggested that if someone recs today’s, for example, they unrec it tomorrow so that section isn’t filled with DLDs.
Last of the Ninth - Photography Site / jamesvenes.com - Blog
yup
and many people don’t recommend a DLD that’s already up on the recommended list….

I like the idea of the Hot FanPost section
because there is a difference between a rec’d post and a commonly commented upon post. I don’t think that recent comments should necessarily be enough to move a post to the top of the list because there are a lot of comments here. I like the rec’d section because it typically sorts the best posts, or at least the ones that strike a chord. I second the proposal of a new section.

I want to agree with the "bubbling up" of recently commented fanposts...
…especially since I have a recent one seeking help on my computer/tv/mlb.tv hook up that has since fallen off and I fear may have already been forgotten by others who were helping me, but there could be a downside too… people “bumping” their own fanposts just to keep them active.

change the settings
it still appears on my list of recent posts since I have the numbers set larger than the default
There's no crying in baseball!
The key thing here right now is while the options may not be perfect...
…you do have the ability to decide how many of each type you want to see by default.
If 95% of the people will never see what I said, they’re probably not following AN closely enough for this to be a major issue. For those of us who do, there are some who almost assuredly have changed their options (or will after seeing this).
I do think something should be done with the most active FanPosts but during the season the stuff with the most comments is, by default, gameday threads. Those are normally done as Stories so they can probably be filtered separately from FanPosts themselves.

But the home page has too much ignorable information for me, and I tend to visit every day. When I do miss a day or two, I feel that I have to dig through the archives to see what I missed. After 2 days, a FanPost is typically gone from the home page. Thus, a greatest hits “Hot FanPosts” would be useful.
“Hot FanPosts” and “Recommended FanPosts” would provide a good collection of articles for weekly or twice weekly visitors…it could provide them with stories that they missed through other sources.
By the way, thanks Flashfire for the info on settings!!

Or you can just click the "fanposts" button on top
It will show you all the fanposts.

How about we lose the adds so we have more room for both fanposts and fanshots?
No?
