Need help coming to Oakland for 1st time

I am bringing my family to Oakland to watch a game in June.  I was looking at tickets in the MVP level behind home in row 19ish.  Approx how far behind home plate is that?  I know there is a lot of foul territory back there!  Any othere suggestions for a good section to watch the game?

Also, any reccommendations for local resturants in the Fishermans Warf area.  We will be staying right around there.  Thanks for any info!!!

There's not much foul territory right behind the plate

Row 19 will put you something like 7-8 rows from the first row and the MVP sections go 20 rows deep.

I think sec. 118 puts you right by the ladies room if you have any elderly folks w/ you.

Grannies love the A’s too.

And she chose those seats for that specific reason. ;)

Fisherman's Wharf is generally not a good area for food

It’s pretty touristy and locals avoid it. But Chowhounders have compiled a list of what’s decent here. Fortunately, you’re close to North Beach, Chinatown, and the Ferry Building, where you can get good eats.

by Englishmajor on Apr 19, 2009 1:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Good point.

It’s also very expensive because I’m sure they have to pay some pretty steep rent.

The first row of section 118 is actually row 12 so you will be nice and close if you are in row 19.

Skip FIshermans Warf and come eat in Oakland. There are lots of great restaurants on Piedmont Avenue or at Jack London Square. Cocina Poblana at Jack London Square is supposed to be really good. If it’s seafood you want I highly recommend Sea Salt in Berkeley.

A lot of places seemed to close early around that area.

Is that still the case?

I think they are staying open later now.

The Jack London area has been going through a redevelopment and is becoming damn nice! I go to the farmers market there most every Sunday.

Restaurants

I would recommend you take advantage of the remarkably diverse options available here. If you want Chinese food, many will tell you to go to House of Nanking (and it will certainly be good), but the best Chinese food as far as I’m concerned is the R&G Lounge.

I can’t recommend too many great places around the Wharf, for pretty much the reasons Englishmajor details. Here are a couple of recommendations outside of the Wharf, though:

1) Mexican food. You really ought to go to a taqueria while you’re here. Mexican food in the rest of country is silly and pointless by comparison. The two best, in my opinion, are Taqueria Cancun (Mission and 18th) and El Farolito (MIssion between 23rd and 24th).

2) German food. Suppenkuche (Laguna and Hayes) is one of the best German restaurants there is.

On the Oakland side of the bay:

1) Asmara restaurant (51st and Telegraph). If you’ve never had Ethiopian food, this is a good place to try it. Beware if you order a mixed drink, as it will have a pile of alcohol in it.

2) Le Cheval (8th and Oak?). Fantastic Vietnamese food, and an Oakland institution.

Finally, if you’re looking for fast food, and not familiar with the awesomeness of In N Out Burger, it is highly recommended.

Or take Billy Beane's recommendation and

go really upscale with a place called Fatapples.

+1 on Suppenkuche. That place rocks!

Also Speisekammer in Alameda has excellent German food and more importantly excellent German beer!

Same ownership.

Used to live within walking distance of Speisekammer. I miss such easy access to pork fat laden awesomeness.

+1 on House Of Nanking!

Mexican food: Zonarosa on the Haight. Amazing burritos! And there are plenty of great ethnic joints in the Mission district.

For a truly great steak and service, The Acme Chophouse at ATT Park is the bomb! Ask for Big John and tell him “M-Rod says hello!”. :)

Have fun at the game……107 is usually where my seats are at.

fisherman's wharf

if you have to stay there, ok… but to me, it’s the place where SF puts its tourists so that they don’t infiltrate the real SF… you could walk from there to North Beach and have Italian food a ton better (and cheaper).. SF is great to walk around, so be sure to get out of the wharf area..
if you like that nature thing, go (by bus or car) to the sutro bath area and walk along the cliffs and beaches of northern SF, great views of the bridge.. or, cross the golden gate bridge and head to muir woods (the bottom loop with the big trees is awesome, but so are the trails that wind up the hill from there). all the east bay ridge parks are great, but my favorite is Redwood Park, which is not too far from the colliseum — take Redwood Rd up the hill off of HW 13, or Joaquin Miller park or Roberts park or Tilden………
If you are into architecture, there are a lot of really beautiful neighborhoods of berkeley, oakland, and piedmont to walk around in..
great food everywhere!
happy trippin’

looking good

These all sound like excellent places! I like to eat local and not in chains. Even though In-n-Out is the best!!!!! Got my tickets last night. I am from TN and always pick a city to go watch the A’s in. This year it is their home! Thanks alot and keep the ideas coming.

I would agree with the comment

that you should stay away from most of the stuff in the Fisherman’s Wharf area – pricey and just not that good.

Everyone has different tastes but I would HIGHLY recommend checking out Zachary’s Chicago Pizza in Oakland. From the Coli you can take a Bart train to the Rockridge Bart station where Zachary’s is just a short block away. Best Pizza in the Bay Area IMO.

by oaktownmario on Apr 20, 2009 8:59 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Also, if you like Thai food

I would recommend this small but excellent Thai restaurant a mile or so from Zachary’s called Sabuy Sabuy. The staff are really friendly and the food is great. And be careful if you ask for something spicy cuz they will oblige and make it spicy.

BART

I know you didnt ask for this info, but I would HIGHLY recommend that you take BART to the game. You can take the BART right at embarcadero and it stops right at the coliseum.

As an added plus, if you have kids who arent used to taking trains, they will love it (I have 4 kids under 12, and they think its the coolest thing to take a train).

We usually stay with friends when we come down from Eureka for a game, but at least once a year we stay in San Francisco in Union Square, near the financial dist or the embarcadero, and even though I am from the bay area, I LOVE doing fisherman’s wharf and China Town. My kids think it’s the coolest thing ever to eat at the wharf. Maybe its just me, but when my kids are that highly entertained, my mission is accomplished and the quest for the best restaurant goes out the window.

I guess it all depends whether you are going with grannies, a group of people your own age, or kids.

Good Burgers Needed?

Try Taylor’s at the Ferry Building for really good simple burgers and shakes. One interesting item is sweet potato fries. Yummy.

I rock!! Guitar Hero said so
