Help with a term paper
Hey, long time AN poster here. Im in a "business ethics (yes, my school did get screwed over by Madoff, so its a bit of a touchy subject)" class in a college, and we've been assigned a term paper on pretty much anything we want, so I want to do a paper analyzing different cases from the business of baseball. Obviously the Furcal controversy is one of the cases I'd want to look at, so does anyone know of any good articles summing up what happened from all sides. Also, if anyone has any other good articles on other cases (Pedro Alvarez/Eric Hosmer, Denny Neagle, etc.) or any other good suggestions, thatd be much appreciated.

Try this
But in all seriousness Ken Rosenthal I think has the best insider break downs of these kinds of situations. His article on Furcal is really balanced IMO. He also had some good stuff in his archives about Alvarez.

Moneyball
Michael Lewis’s book MONEYBALL is all about the business of baseball, and how Billy Beane tried to come up with a business model that works in baseball.

Payoffs and the Washington Nationals scandal
What about something about the signing bonus scandal involving Jim Bowden, Jose Rijo and the Washington Nationals? I can’t find a specific link right away but it involved shadiness in signing Latin American prospects and pocketing signing bonus money or something like that.
good idea
There is an article in ESPN The Magazine about it too
on newsstands now?

I was just spent the weekend visiting a business school I may attend, and I sat in on a class in corporate responsibility
There was a slide presented with a breakdown of a poll (I can’t find it on the internet right now) of the reasons why people behave unethically. The top reason, if I remember correctly, was “pressure to achieve unrealistic goals”. Looking down the list of reasons, I couldn’t help but wonder how steroid usage in the Majors could be compared to the discussion of traditional business ethics. Is it one and the same?

Corporate responsibility is always and interesting topic...
…to go on and on about for a term paper because half of the paper can have an injection of one’s own biases and is sure to get both the writer and the reader fired up over.
If anyone, including hardenaman365, wishes to do a paper on that, a good starting point that covers three separate views on the matter can be found here. From there, it would be easy to adopt a view and find additional articles to reinforce that view; and you’d be able to do that because you’ve presented various sides and showed the tensions between them.

could steroid use in the majors be compared to business ethics?
yes and no. yes in a more fundamental level that they are both cheating to get ahead for themselves and screwing other people on the way
the impact and methods are very different though. A company (or employee) acts unethically, the impact is much greater, could bring down the entire company if severe enough, where one player won’t screw over an entire team to its knees. Also usually to cheat in corporate life you need a partner except in rare circumstances, so a lot of your work is based on convincing others to join in or stay quiet.
the other difference I would say is that in companies there are specifically ways to try to prevent those cheating, while in baseball, its really not that discouraged, until the press gets a hold of it and holds them accountable. I hope I made some sense, not sure if I did

Yankee stadium and Citifield funding?
the Anti Trust issue in baseball?
the implied terrirotial rights of San Jose?
The Fremont fiasco?
My favorite one would be Jeffrey Loria screwing his Montreal Expos co investors and becoming majority owner of the Floria Marlins
Minnesota Twins stadium funding?
the business of “Posting” Japanese players?
The pre-agreement of contracts with to be draftees?

The Anti Trust exemption
would make excellent fodder. I think its been ruled on twice by the Supreme Court, so the documentation would be rather expansive for research material.
