Giese Up; Blevins Down

According to Susan Slusser at sfgate.com:

  • The A's recalled right-hander Dan Giese, a onetime Giant, from Triple-A Sacramento this morning and they sent out lefty Jerry Blevins.
  • Giese said he can spot start and go long. He's also tickled that the A's head to New York on Monday - he was one of the Yankees' very last cuts before Opening Day.

Star-divide

This move leaves the A's without a lefty in the pen.  Blevins wasn't getting a lot of work and Geren was in danger of wearing-out Bailey, Wuertz and Casilla.  Good move!

Another long reliever is a good thing

(assuming the long relievers are actually allowed to pitch). Maybe a precursor to moving Outman to the bullpen? More likely AAA but I think if Outman is going to succeed, it will be in the pen where he can at least throw harder.

Yeah.

I have no Idea of what they are doing with Gallagher. Maybe hes pitching some side sessions to get pit ch count up.

"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

I think they'd need for him to pitch actual games

to stretch out — and that would be best at AAA level.

I'd agree with you but..

Who do we replace with him in the rotation? Gallagher? He’s been mediocre at best in his long relief stints. Gio? He’s been pretty terrible in AAA. I wish Mazzaro was seasoned enough to play him, but we can’t. Maybe when Duke comes back, our problem’s going to be solved there.

Marty had the scoop during his show (7:35 am)

when Vince told him about it.

I also posted it then in the DLD and last night’s wrap because I didn’t think it was long enough for a fanpost.

my bad, didn't see it in either of those places....

I always think roster moves are worthy of fanposts, whether or not there’s enough content. I think they generate a lot of discussion. There’s tons of rosterbaters around these here parts.

no problem, I agree with you

In the past fanposts that I’ve tried to post didn’t make it because they weren’t long enough, so I stopped doing them unless I had enough to write that wasn’t just filler.

by OaklandSi on Apr 18, 2009 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You made the right move.

I for one, don’t go back and read old DLDs or the game recap. This is newsworthy and deserves its own Fanpost.

If ever a game should have been called on account of wind, that one was it. Good thing Jerry Blevins didn't have to pitch; he's tall, skinny, and I could practically see one of the 40-mph gusts...sweeping him off the bump and pinning him to the left-field fence. --Mychael Urban

Who's the new 5th starter?

I agree that this has to be a precursor to Outman moving to the pen – there is no way Geren can get by with an all-righty pen in the AL.

But that begs the question: who is the new 5th starter? With the off days, we theoretically don’t need a 5th starter for a couple of weeks. Will they stretch out Gallagher? Or will there be another roster move and bring up one of the AAA rotation?

I'm wondering whether they will send Ducscherer to AAA to build up

his pitch count in preparation to return to the rotation…he should be ready to do this in a couple of weeks.

I'm not confident Duke will be much of a factor...

surgery provided no answers and the minor clean-up in the elbow may not make him whole. He either has a low-pain tolerance or there’s something the docs aren’t seeing. Let’s hope that I’m wrong

More from SuSlu...

Geren explained today’s roster move, and he said that it was more to do with Jerry Blevins struggles than anything else.

Also:
the A’s must be close to considering a roster move. They can’t go into New York down two men if Chavez and Garciaparra are both still iffy.

if Chavvy isn't fully ready to play on Monday

they can DL him retroactive to last Sunday (his last game) and call up someone.

by OaklandSi on Apr 18, 2009 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually I just read the news

that Nomar can’t play today because of that calf. Bets on which one – Chavvy or Nomar — will get DLed first?

by OaklandSi on Apr 18, 2009 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like Chavy will be back Monday,

so I’m betting he isn’t DLed. Especially because he played on that Sunday; otherwise he would have two more days retroactive to shorten a DL stint.

I'd prefer they'd just DL Chavy now regardless

IF he’s ready to play tomorrow do it in Sac and see if he holds up. If he does, in a week he can be back with the club, if it was just a tease, then he should be on the DL anyway and at least we maintain his current retroactive status in case it simply going to take another week to build himself back to playing level.

i think this happens

giese/gallagher to rotation
outman to bullpen

outman can go max velocity for 1/2 innings and be more effective…he’s 94-97 mph out the bullpen

The only other option would be Mazzaro

Gio didn’t seem ready yet.

giese is actually a decent pitcher

i guess

today he did not look good at all, I can see where if he keeps his pitches down he could be decent but when you throw 87 and are throwing it belt high you arent decent and definitely dont belong in the majors

Not today he wasn't...

Crap. 2ER loss.

If Ziegler blows a save... I'll flag his next post.
