Holy Grail Part II: Lastings Milledge
So if you've followed Beane's man crush going back 5 yrs now. The A's liked Milledge in that 2003 draaft,
So if you have followed Beane's man crush going back about 5 years or so, the A's have like this guy from the 2003 draft. He didnt quite make it to their pick and we had the honor of drafting future stars like Brad Sullivan, Brad Snyder, and Omar Quintanilla. Fast forward several years later, we experienced the never ending zito/harden/blanton/haren trade talks with mets during the deadlines and offseasons which never came into fruition due to the stubborn omar minaya never giving into the asking price of milledge. So this guy does have some milton bradley like issues but that has not prevented from acquiring similar players before. This is typical moneyball, exploit market inefficiences and attack when a stituation arises. Some might disagree, but i would take milledge over buck and sweeney. At worst, he's another OF option if and when holliday leaves via free agency or is traded. Milledge was demoted from nats due to some shaky defense and being late to team meetings. How ironic, his replacement is Elijah Dukes who's behavioral issues are even worse. So if the price is right, would you pursue milledge sort of in a buy low situation? Or maybe a swap for Barton who nats wanted this summer? Or dont even bother getting milledge if you are satisfied with the current OF depth?

Here's Duke nice track record according to wiki:
In 1996, Dukes' father was convicted of second-degree murder. One year later, Dukes was arrested for the first time. Dukes has been arrested at least three times for battery, and once for assault.[6] According to court records, he fathered at least five children with four women between 2003 and 2006.[6]
Dukes has received anger management training.[6] When Dukes was traded to the Nationals, the team also hired an ex-police officer in the role of "Special Assistant: Player Concerns". This person accompanies Dukes everywhere to ensure that he keeps himself free of trouble.[6]

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

I would take him
but really cheap,,,How about Raji Davis and some never be major A ball player. Lastings can be our 5th OF for the year, fill in for injuries and compete for a job come next season

Miledge just isnt very good.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

i have to agree. he's been playing in washington the past 2 or so seasons
what makes anyone think he’s gonna start putting up numbers in the coliseum?

log jams?
lets look at the depth chart
holliday likely gone in a few months or after 09
buck/sweeney.
davis i’m sorry he’s just not good
cust i’d be happy if he never plays in the OF for the rest of his career
cunningham has had 2 injuries that have cost him major progression time w/ the wrist and now shoulder.
hererra/mitchell are unfortunately like robnett. their hitting lags way behind their tools/athleticism
i do like dootlittle but we’ll see what happens in his AAA stint. same with brown in AA.
denorfia i actually like him better than davis as a backup
depending on the price, it wouldnt be horrible to see an OF rotation of sweeney, buck, milledge, cunningham in 2010 or so.

I'd rather have Delwyn Young, who was just DFAd

I still like Milledge
but I wouldn’t give up anything of too much value to get him. Right now he looks like a guy with a superstar mentality who can’t hit enough to play corner OF and can’t field well enough to play CF. He seems like a decent 4th OF who can’t handle a part time role.
He’s young enough to improve on some of his weaknesses but I wouldn’t bet a lot on that happening.
