Unfortunately, Crosby really is that bad . . .

I've been reading post after post on this blog about what a poor baseball player Bobby Crosby is.  I kind of thought that 38 doubles last year and his Rookie Of The Year season showed he must have some use to the A's.  I was wrong.

I doesn't matter how many hours he spent working out with McGwire and Holliday in the off-season -- the dude still stands 4 feet from the plate and can't handle outside pitches for some reason.

As far as contributing as a utilityman he's worse with a glove than a bat.  It's too bad because he seems like a good guy.  He even stopped warming up before a game last year to sign autographs for my daughter and her girlfriend -- then again, maybe that was because they are super attractive 19-year-old females?

Did you uhh... just call your daughter super attractive?

lol at least i'm not the only one who thought that was weird

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

I can also say

that Brad Pitt is an attractive man. It doesn’t make me gay. It’s strictly an observation. Any opinion on Crosby’s talents or mindset?

by BlueMoon on Apr 15, 2009 8:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Do you think Pennington/Petit could put up similar offesnive stats to Bobby?

If the answer is yes, then it’s probably time to eat the money and let Bobby go. Especially with Nomar/Chavez as fragile as ever. “Bobby Crosby” and “starting thirdbaseman” should probably never be in the same sentence.

by Darryl P on Apr 15, 2009 8:22 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The projection systems on the three:

CHONE:

Crosby — .239/.303/.357 = .660 OPS
Pennington — .233/.326/.308 = .634 OPS
Petit — .243/.294/.331 = .625 OPS

ZiPS:

Crosby — .234/.296/.344 = .640 OPS
Pennington — .227/.309/.293 = .602 OPS
Petit — .260/.305/.336 = .641 OPS

PECOTA:

Crosby — .240/.304/.357 = .661 OPS
Pennington — .218/.306/.304 = .610 OPS
Petit — .229/.276/.314 = .580 OPS

They think Crosby is a better hitter than Petit and Pennington, so it makes sense to keep trying him till it’s clear he can’t make the adjustments to 2B and 3B. I’d give it till Memorial Day.

I'm still hoping for Cardenas by the end of the year.

Orlando’s durable enough that a backup SS isn’t that important….and Petit is OK in an emergency.

Defensively speaking

The guy can only play 1 position. He is a terrible at 3b. A player who doesn’t want a ball hit at him shows no confidence.

by Arcman on Apr 15, 2009 8:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems really strange that a guy would be able to play short but be so bad at third.

Granted third had a lot to do with reflexes, but still, it just doesn’t make much sense.

by Darryl P on Apr 15, 2009 8:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's really only played SS in his ENTIRE career

And he’s just been working on 3rd and 2nd this spring and has gotten very little game action. Don’t crucify the guy for sucking at defense, he just started. As for his bat… yeah, he’s about as stubborn as they come. Six inches closer to the plate man, and lay off the low and outside slider.

by NateHST on Apr 15, 2009 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is a real good guy. I have been pulling for him for years.

Agree with both your statements about his defense and his bat 100%.

by easyraider on Apr 15, 2009 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great point.

Unfortunately with Nomar/chavez ailing, the team doesn’t have the luxury of letting Crosby learn third (or second for that matter). Since he isn’t going to give you much with the bat it might make sense to bring somebody up who is already a competent defender at those two positions.

by Darryl P on Apr 15, 2009 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not his defense

Its his attitude that bothers me. I don’t expect much from his bat but I do expect him to play with a positive attitude. When you say to the media I don’t want to do this it gives everyone a negative feeling. Nomar plays out of position and is a team player. Crosby needs to suck his pride and tell the A’s can I go to AAA and learn a new position. Instead all we hear is release me. Sorry but there are no open SS jobs in the major so do what you need to do to stay in the majors.

It's what is implied

The only reason Bobby is on the MLB roster is because he’s hand-cuffed himself to it. As a five year player he has the right to refuse an assignment to Sacto in order become a free agent and find a starting gig elsewhere making the mlb minimum (while A’s still pay the remainder of his salary).

If he gave 2 shits about this team he would waive that right, head down to Sacto for a month, and work at 3rd and 2nd every day in order to become a real utility player without making the major league squad pay for his learning mistakes. But he’s undoubtedly let Beane know, through his agent, that this isn’t an option. And so he continues to suck for the A’s in a bizarre game of chicken.

Just release him already- I’m tired of watching this play out.

What the hell do you want him to do?

Say, “Yeah I love being a backup it’s what I always dreamed about”? If he does that then people will get on him for striving for mediocrity. Honestly, I don’t think he’s a good player or that he’ll ever reach half his potential. But there’s really nothing he can do to win with the fans in Oakland.

at least he’d bring some value to being in the line-up. I’d love to see him move up to the plate like a man and take his swings — don’t want to see him swinging from the on-deck circle any more.

I think we may see Hannahan quickly

If Chavy and Nomar can’t go— they better DL one of them. Hannhan was rated like the 3rd or 4th best defensive 3bman last year— and how much worse than BC can he be at the plate? Or at 2B? I think Crosby’s days are numebred.

rather have Pennington

he can play all 3 IF positions well, and hit just as well (read: bad) as the Hannahan and Crosby.

I like Golf, but I'm not very good at it. For example, I have never gotten a Hole in One. But I did hit a guy, and that was way more satisfying. Or, the problem....

….is that carrying 12 pitchers means that outside the backup catcher and whoever isn’t playing from the RF/DH/1B/3B situation, the A’s only have room for 1 backup OF and 1 backup INF. Just drop a pitcher and bring up both Hannahan and Petit/Pennington.

which translates roughly into rock and roll and entertainment terms as

No, never, no way, no how.

You’re right that he could play there if there’s something funky with a late inning pinch hit / run situation or an injury where it’s too late to call someone up for the day.

He ain’t no shortstop no more. IMO he was never that good of a defensive shortstop even in his prime. I watched him a lot here in Boston. His only real strength was his range; his glove and arm were never really high caliber for a MLB SS.

And he no longer has the range.

Third he should figure out

But I really see no reason why he should EVER play second base. I know it’s unconventional to move your starting SS to a new position to accommodate a backup, but Crosby’s not much worse than O-Cab at short and I’d have to imagine, based on size and quickness, that O-Cab’s a much better second baseman than Crosby.

Cabrera's played 33 games (27 starts) at 2B in his career (1567 games on defense).

Cabrera is a two time gold glove shortstop

who is very consistent and durable at that position. He is best used by staying at shortstop.

Crosby is simply going to have to learn to play other positions adequately enough to increase his versatility.

Of course, if he was hitting this problem wouldn’t even have come up.

all crosby had to do was make minor adjustments – stand closer to the plate, work on pitch selectivity, tinker with his stance (which, thank god, he finally did…1-2 years too late). i mean, he was on a club with frank thomas, a HOFer who always makes adjustments. if the big hurt was willing to mess around a little, who the hell are you to be stubborn with an approach that absolutely doesn’t work? seriously, that’s all he had to do. put in the effort to make adjustments. his defense was fine. i think we’d even tolerate lower numbers (can they get lower for crosby?) if it was due to him getting used to the adjustments he was making. but he kept doing the same thing, every AB. nice guy, sure, but deserves no rope whatsoever anymore. he made his bed here.

Wood might play better 3b defense than Crosby, but do you think hes a longterm solution there?

Cardenas might be ready for 3b by the middle or end of next year and Wood has all sorts of bust potential. Do you really want to trade Simmons within the division for someone like that? You could probably get Friese or Craig from the Cards cheaper.

WRONG

If he gave a shit about winning a title for the A’s he would take his lumps at Sacto learning to play the position where he fits on this roster- utility.

Instead he’s handcuffed himself to the roster by letting it be known that he’d rather look for a starting SS gig on another team.

Why should he care about winning a title for the A's?

It’s a business, you’re in this for yourself – the A’s wouldn’t think twice about cutting him if they could afford to eat the $5m. He has a much better chance of showcasing himself if he’s in the majors as a utility guy (considering the fragility of our infield) than floundering in the minors learning new positions.

The 5th guy in a 1B-2B-3B platoon that features Chavez, Nomar, Ellis and Giambi is anything but a “backup backup”. He’s somebody that will get significant playing time and will be counted on contribute solid D at multiple positions in order to spell the fragile regulars. Unfortunately this specific, extremely important, role is exactly the kind of thing that Crosby is incapable of doing.

I don't agree that Crosby is the best option right now; Hannahan is

Cabrera is durable enough that you don’t need a backup SS to be on the active roster – just one to be ready if he were to get hurt, as any player can.

Hannahan plays an excellent 3B, also looks totally comfortable at 2B (I saw him there in ST and he looked 10x better at 2B than Crosby did, or does, at 3B), and can play 1B. He also walks, and is a better offensive player overall than Crosby – not that he’s a good offensive player, but he IS an upgrade over Crosby.

If Cabrera gets hurt you just let Nomar or Hannahan handle SS the rest of the game and then send Hannahan down in exchange for Petit. I don’t see the downside – if you’re ready to eat the $5.5million sunk cost, which I am. Send Crosby down, let him accept or refuse the assignment, and let Hannahan backup 3B and 2B.

Crosby’s misplay of the Lowell hit that tied the game yesterday is a play Hannahan makes easily – that he either fields or at least knocks down to save the run (any true 3Bman knows that you get in front of that with a runner at second and two out) – and that well could have cost the A’s the game.

I guess the downside is that Nomar or Hannahan at SS could lose you that game, and that Petit

would be a worse fill-in than Crosby, but your plan is a reasonable one.

I think I’d wait a couple of months to see if Crosby can gain comfort at 2B and 3B before doing this though.

Should I even bother...

defending him? I want to, I really do… But I also have to admit that when he goes in at third I hide under the covers. I thought he did rather well when he was at 2nd and 1st. But 3rd is just scary. I am trying to hold on to a little faith that things will come around at 3rd. I mean, he is brand new to the position. But faith is not enough to defend him with.

As for the offensive side… well… pretty much everyone is sucking it up right now. So really, there is plenty of blame to go around from that angle. I guess what I mean is, out alternatives to Crosby are not much better offensively.

He is not the MVP candidate that gammons thought in 05 (?). Are we going to call every journeyplayer bad? He looked like a star in minors and for a few months his rookie year. He is not a star. its too bad he has a terrible contract, but that is not his fault. It seems to me the guy whose fault the contract is figured out that it was a mistake and covered for it this winter.
