Swisher out-hits, out-pitches Nady
Checking out the ESPN scoreboard this morning, I had to check for more details when I saw the Rays clobber the Yankees 15-5. Wang only lasted an inning, and apparently the Yankees were desperate enough that they put SWISHER in to pitch the 8th! He gave up a walk and a single but managed to strike out Gabe Kapler (ouch), preserving his lifetime ERA at 0.00. Earlier in the game, he'd hit his third HR of the season, putting him three ahead of his main competition for a lineup spot, Xavier Nady. After being named the starting RF, Nady hasn't done much with it:
Nady: .280/.308/.440
Swisher: a completely sustainable .450/.542/1.150

Awww… Unicorn's optimistic. And a cheeseball. That’s cute. ~Whiteshoes40
The best part....
…Swish’s smile after striking out Kapler. It just makes me miss him all the more — no one plays with more heart or more joy.
Meh, whatever. We have Travis Buck and Aaron Cunningham!
Oh..
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
My favorite part is when he shakes off the sign against Kapler
The Yankees announcers could have some fun with it instead of sounding suicidal.

You guys know where to find my full commentary,
but I’ll say this:
He pitched from the stretch!

I want a full Pitchf/x workup of Swisher.

Kei Igawa
I actually thought it was Kei Igawa when I first watched live via MLB EI… then I saw the excellent command and downward movement.
LOL…Swisher went 1 for 3 with a homerun & pitched a scoreless 8th inning, including a strikeout. Haaahahaha!
I miss Swish…
P.S. Struck out by a switch-hitting, first baseman who throws an 80mph change-up for fun? Kapler might want to consider retiring.

Well, the batters weren't trying hard, it seemed
And nobody tried to steal.
Oh, and perhaps the best part...
Swish has a 0.00 ERA!

I wonder why
they don’t play him in CF. He’s gotta be better than Gardner or Cabrera

Defensively? Not a chance. You'd have to weigh up whether his offence
outweighs the difference in defence in comparison to what Gardner and Cabrera bring to the table.

Can NY Media, Fans, and Announcers muster up a laugh?
what a dreadful place to play
wow – that’s why it takes extra millions to get free agents to come there.

i'm sure this'll get taken down soon, but here's the footage

actually, thinking abot this, I’m kinda pissed with the Yankees – they’re like a sulky child taking their ball home when they start to lose. where’s the respect for the Rays? And the rest of the division?
am i wrong to feel like this?

No you are not wrong
that is exactly what I was thinking. I didn’t think Posada could complain more.
I'unno
The game is out of hand. Why waste your bullpen when you’re going to need them for the rest of the series? I can see what you’re saying, but I think it’s pretty benign. And an early highlight of the baseball season for me, anyway.
I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.
oh, don't get me wrong
seeing Swish pitch is amazing.
I just think that if it weren’t the Yanks, or one of the usual subjects, there’d be a lot more whining from baseball tonight about ‘the spirit of the game’, or somesuch.

Swish probably got a call from his agent
reminding him never to do that again. great way to get hurt. position players really should not pitch. they’re not prepared for it.

Jeez, listening to the commentary, did somebody die?
You lose a lot in baseball, you’ve got to have fun with it. Swisher is such a character you could tell he was enjoying it – unlike the commentators who thought it was disrespectful for Swisher to keep the strickout ball (which is insane, he’s never going to strike someone out again – it’s not his fault the hitter is terrible).
The comments by Posada are a joke too – he really needs to chill the f’ out. At the end of the day it’s a game.
this is the difference....
…between Big Ego Market teams and Small Market teams.
When you live in the NY fishbowl, you eventually end up drinking their media’s medicine. Some guys go narcissistic like A-Rod, other guys lose the joy that brought them up in the game. It’ll be interesting to see how Sabathia will handle it. At any rate, I’m very glad to see Swish be such an irrespressable spirit — his smile is an eff-you to the Sturm und Drang that often surrounds the Yankees.
It’s easy to root against pompous asses who seem to kill their golden goose with their hypercriticism. It’s even easier to root for guys like Swish, whose verve makes so many naturally smile. Maybe places like Oakland allow their stars the breathing room to be themselves without jumping all over their sh*t.
I know baseball is a business, and the business is to win. But it’s also entertainment, and on that level Swish is a HOFer. I missed him more yesterday than I had all last year. I’m a grown up and don’t begrudge Billy (or anyone else) the way things went down — but man I missed that impish smile.

That is the thing
I really don’t understand why the whiners can’t understand that sport is supposed to be fun, to bring moments of joy to people. That is why we fans pay so much of our money for, and devote so much of our time to, sports.

I don't think A-Rod went narcissistic in NYC
He was already that way when he got there. it’s just that, when it happens in new york, people care. not so with tx and seattle.

The game was over before Swish stepped onto the mound, it was only a matter of trying to stem the bleeding on the Yankees side of things.
Why not have a little fun when your team is in a crappy situation, and try to enjoy what Swisher did out there…I know I did.

Swisher said it right in the interview, you want to find something to smile about when you reach the end of a lopsided defeat.
It’s a 162 game season. You can’t let a bad performance ruin your game the next day.
Plus, the Yankees did the best thing for their RP staff by giving a guy a rest since their starter got rocked early. Swisher isn’t considered one of their nine starters anyway, so it doesn’t matter if he tires his arm out.

Nady
Isn’t getting benched. He’s not even struggling. We’ll see what the Yankees do when Teixeira comes back
Clear its radiance shine...
Nady might end up missing the season due to an injury.
or a good part of it. So Swish will be starting.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
Swisher is the very definition of Moxy
Totally cool outside of baseball too when I ran into him. His trade still hurts.
I hope NY doesn't ruin him.
I do love this man. I always will (even though he did turn down my marriage proposal at Spring Training in ‘07) I cringe when I see him in that uniform, but he’s having fun for now. I hope he can keep it up against those douchebags.
I know it was said once already….but they REALLY REALLY don’t deserve him. He has the A’s spirit and will always be an Athletic in my heart….

Nady's out the rest of the year probably
Looks like Swish won’t have to fight for that starting spot.
