Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

GOG 2009 #03

The season has barely begun, but this already feels like an important series. The A's are coming off a sweep at the hands of a division rival and now have to face one of the consistently best teams in baseball -- the Boston Red Sox. Of course, what really makes this series important is that my girlfriend is a big Red Sox fan. Every day I walk into the apartment past her collage of player photos. Well, let's just say I've got my fingers crossed for a sweep.

GOG #03 :: Bleach the Red Sox (36 points possible)

Three game series vs BOS -- April 13-15

Updated to include answers in bold

  1. Series outcome [3 points] 2-1 Oakland
  2. Does any game in the series finish in less than 3 hours? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] yes, games 1 and 3
  3. Does Boston or Oakland get more hits off the bench in the series? [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] ChoCoBoCro 1, Boston 0
  4. The Knuckler :: Predict Wakefield's H/BB/K [2 points each] 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  5. Holliday's first HR in green and gold :: Against a) Lester b) Matsuzaka c) Wakefield d) Papelbon e) none of the above [3 points] Holliday still hasn't homered, so the answer is e)
  6. Which A's starter has the best pitching performance this series? [3 points] Anderson :: 7 IP, 2ER, 5K, 2BB, 5H
  7. Spotlight on Sweeney :: Predict his H/R/TB [2 points each] 2 H, 1 R, 2 total bases (both hits are singles)
  8. Does clutch exist? :: Does Ortiz get any hits in this series when a game is close and late? (from Baseball-Reference -- Late & Close are PA in the 7th or later with the batting team tied, ahead by one, or the tying run at least on deck.) [+1 if right, -1 if wrong] no, Ortiz did get a hit in the 8th inning of game 3 but the Sox were already up by 2
  9. Does Wuertz's hot start continue? :: Guess how many Red Sox he strikes out [3 points] 1K (Chris Carter, looking)
  10. How many walks for the Greek god? (in case you haven't read Moneyball*, I'm talking about Kevin Youkilis) [3 points] 2 walks
  11. This is me pulling my hair out :: How many at-bats do the A's get with RISP? How many of those at-bats result in hits? [3 points each] Oakland gets 28 at-bats with RISP and gets 9 hits

Answers are due before Braden's first pitch Monday night. Scores for GOG #02 will be added to that fANpost once I write a bit of code to do it (this means no sooner than tomorrow).

*Ok, I was glancing at the wikipedia article on Moneyball and… they're making a movie of it?**… starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane?… seriously? I loved the book, but does anyone else think that this will be the worst movie ever? Bonus GOG question: Will the movie adaptation of Moneyball be the worst thing ever? [+1 if you say yes, -1 if you say no]

**I'm sure this has already been*** mentioned on AN (like here, sort of. Actually, I think monkeyball is just years ahead of the rest of us.)

***also, I just wanted to add that I'm using Pozerisks and loving it!

Results

This was a wild one. Average score was much better than the last two GOGs, but the standard deviation was larger and we still have one person score less than zero. Eight people scored 12 points and oblique turns in the best score of the GOG season to date, with 20!

Overall scoring statistics

  • mean = 8.08889 points
  • standard deviation = 5.02639 points
  • mode = 12 points!

Your Scores

I'm feeling pretty good about my code to generate these tables now, but there is definitely still plenty of room for human error. So if you see something wrong with your score, let me know.

Besides oblique's awesome performance, I also want to point out the intense battle between micdog2001 and zaniac75 for the lead in overall points. micdog2001 won GOG #01 with 16 points, but zaniac75 was only one behind. Since then, they have been exactly matched, with scores of 11 and 15 for the last two series.

I've been an A's optimist in GOG 0 through 2

so it’s time to shake things up a bit.

1. 3-0 Boston
2. No. Boston too busy scoring many, many runs.
3. Boston
4. 4/1/7
5. E
6. Eveland
7. 2/1/3
8. Yes
9. 0
10. 4 (Who hasn’t read Moneyball?)
11. 13/2.

Extra credit: Beane immediately trades Holliday after Wednesday’s humiliating 13-0 loss.

on the Daisuke thing. It was only non-annoying for like the first 2 times I saw it. I mean, it’s an ok mnemonic for not totally butchering the Japanese pronunciation, but at this point we all have a decent idea of how to say his first name.

yeah

I meant to clarify that one. And I really should have, seeing as I screwed up on my own GOG response and only managed to fix it right before the game started.

How about #3?

is it pinch hits or hits by bench players?

I was going for

all hits by players who weren’t in the starting lineup for that game. So defensive replacements who later get an AB would count.

Sorry about the unclear questions this time around.

no problem, it's not like your getting paid to do this.
