Open Thread: Game 6 - A's vs. Mariners (cont.)
After having some control issues early in the game, Trevor Cahill has settled down, keeping the Mariners off the board. In parallel, the A's hitters are making Bedard look like something special, matching Cahill zero for zero.
We head on to the 7th inning with the two teams scoreless, and the A's needing to go out on top to avoid being swept on Easter Sunday. Let's see what Cahill has in mind for our heros...

they're not undead, though
I was on your side, until a someone explained to me at some length why it is not a zombie film.
Basically, because they’re ill rather than resurrected, they’re not zombies.

yea, but its also a bit misleading.
Dude OPSed .794 and .786 in 2005 and 2006, and he hasn’t really been healthy since then.
Well, that's the point
.800’s a low benchmark to begin with…..and he hasn’t been healthy.
RagingHarden: Yeah if you get 20 starts out of me I'll be shocked. Like, I'll wreck my drawers.
by walk off bunt on Apr 12, 2009 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions
there's no way anybody could tell the difference between a .794 and .800 OPS hitter of the course of a season.
it’s essentially the same thing. And for the A’s, and third baseman .800 OPS would be only somethign to dream about.
That says less about Chavez and more about the lack of a solid 3B in the organization for the last several years.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
you are correct.
poor point to make on my part. But still. It is ridiculous to say that Chavez hasn’t OPSed .800 since 2004 when he put up .794 and .786 lines in the seasons immediately following. It’s just using the number .800 as a completely arbitrary cut off.
All the same, i will agree with the premise that Chavez has been injured crap for a long time.
My point wasn't really analytical.
I used a goofy stat that, while misleading, nevertheless does illustrate the general downward trend in Eric Chavez’s career.
This:
“All the same, i will agree with the premise that Chavez has been injured crap for a long time.”
is all I was getting at.
RagingHarden: Yeah if you get 20 starts out of me I'll be shocked. Like, I'll wreck my drawers.
by walk off bunt on Apr 12, 2009 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions
yea, i get what you were saying.
I was just surprised when you listed that stat, so i went to look it up and thought it was worth mentioning that he effectively did OPS .800 in ’05 and ’06.
800's not that low for a 3rd baseman
Only six AL 3rd basemen OPS’d over .800 in 2008… A-Rod, Longoria, Blalock, Blake, Mora, Guillen.
If Chavez is close to 2006 form this season, we couldn’t do much better.
Right, and "good" Chavez is better than all but A-Rod in that list.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
