DLD 4/11/09: From Lurking to Linking
Hello AN!
Long time reader, first time DLDer. Man it feels good to be a linker. To answer Costello, I'll be on first today. Here's what happening on and beyond the internet:
KNBR covers the A's! Fitz and Brook check in with Rollie "best player to never earn a cool nickname" Fingers. Solid interview highlighted by Rollie's tale of being hit in the head by a pitch (à la Joe Martinez). Lowlight is Fingers promoting his HOF wine: Cooperstown Cuvee.
Home runs. Who needs 'em? From the excellent Stat of the Day blog at baseball-reference.com comes Best OPS+ with no homers. Number 2 on the list is our very own (from waaay back) Eddie Collins. devo* anointed him sixth best All-Time Athletic. Speaking of blasts from the past...
...from the annals of the truly strange, find out who Ty Cobb's friends are. Lots of old-time A's on the list; once upon a time the Georgia Peach was one! If you think the modern A's have a hefty appetite for over-the-hill veterans, you haven't seen the 1928 roster yet. Three 40+ HOF hitters and 44 year old pitcher Jack Quinn (247 career wins).
No matter how bad your (link) dumping skill, know that you're better than this:

*Question for all those English lovers out there: do you capitalize a lower-case name at the beginning of the sentence?

Incorrect
Grover (or devo, in this instance) is always capitalized at the beginning of a sentence. Proper grammatical structure always takes precedence over individual psychosis.

The capitalization has been discussed on a couple of occasions at least
but I can’t for the life of me remember what the verdict was.

When your name is Rollie Fingers, why do you need a nickname?
And The Chicago Manual of Style says, “…a name beginning with a lowercase letter should not begin a sentence; if it must, it should be capitalized.” But I agree with colin. You’re just asking for trouble when you write “Grover.”
...then Pennington takes over.

I bet this has been mentioned before,
but I’ll mention it again.
Why is the MLB Dugout Heroes ad a picture of a Giant? I’m on an A’s fan site, and I live in Los Angeles. It’s bugging me, although it probably has no right to do so.

Gaudin signs with San Diego
it’s a minor league deal. The Padres pay only $400,000 of the more than $2 million that Gaudin will be getting this year (the Cubs are on the hook for the rest). Although I had earlier supported bringing him back, it seems that ever since he tripped on a curb and hurt his back when he hit the dumpster his pitching has also been in the dumpster. Hopefully he’ll be able to recover and work out whatever pitching issues he has…I wish him well.
Also, the Giants signed former Angels prospect Dallas McPherson to a minor league deal. He has big time power, but has not yet impressed at the major league level….and by the way, former A’s third base prospect Jesús Guzmán is playing first base for the Giants’ AAA club at the moment – they have a player named Ryan Rholinger playing third base there.
by OaklandSi on Apr 12, 2009 7:03 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Sure his pitching was in the dumpster
So was Dempster’s pitching. But Dempster made his way out of the dumpster thus proving that the voyage on the ‘trip’ can be curbed. Perhaps we can still support having Gaudin back instead of giving his career the verbal lynching. Beware of hanging a Chad! Though, personally, I’m not in favor of having his ‘back’ on this one.
by LowcountryJoe on Apr 12, 2009 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps if Gaudin fell into a goodan
he’d pitch as well as Dempster. My reasoning:
Gaudin is to dumpster as Dempster is to _?

If there's one thing the Pads do well,
It’s dumpster diving for bargain players, especially relief pitchers. Over the last few weeks I think they’ve picked up Luis Perdomo, Ed Mujica, Shawn Hill and now Gaudin.

Nasty rant from the interwebs on name capitalization
Standing firmly on the pro-Grover side comes Idris Mercer. Enjoyable if long-winded rant on the subject, from whence came this gem:
But I would draw the line if Kathryn made a point of saying she preferred “kathryn” to “Kathryn”. To my mind, such a request would be asking for a fundamentally different kind of treatment from the ordinary courtesy we extend to somebody who changes their name or prefers to use their middle name. The spelling or pronunciation of your name is a feature of your name, but capitalization of proper nouns is a feature of the surrounding language.

Hmmmm....
I’ve known people to legally change their names to include no capitalization…I would think theirs would then not be capitalized, even at the start of a sentence…
There's no crying in baseball!
by gigglingone on Apr 12, 2009 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
The first word of any sentence is supposed to be capitalized, even names that have been legally changed to include no capitalization. That is basic English and my mother, a former English teacher, would not be happy if I in any way attempted or contributed to corrupting that part of the English language.

I rather like Bill Walsh's take on the subject
By a twist of cosmic fate there exists in the blog sphere a copy editor who shares names with a certain legendary 49’s coach. Perhaps the similar merger of sports and grammar on his blog and ours has swayed my opinion favorably, but I’m agreeing with his outlook.
Walsh’s theory approaches the issue by differentiating names used brand versus those used for the person representing said brand. There is the musical persona k. d. lang, but the Canadian lady behind the brand is still K. D. The theory led me to an insomnia induced rant epiphany.
An internet handle has two functions. One is a moniker through which at set of opinions and beliefs are given a distinct brand. The other is an alias representing a real-world individual. By Walsh’s logic, the choice to capitalize acts as a sign indicating which function of the handle one is referring to. Example:
1) Handle as brand: grover’s work on Oakland’s future cap space shows that it is quite feasible to retain Matt Holliday’s services for over $20 million yearly.
2) Handle as person: Grover lost his voice cheering for the A’s at the last homestand.
If we were in France I’ve no doubt this rule would be strictly enforced to maintain the language. However, this being America, free will and free press shall rule the day. If the people want lower-cased names at the beginning of a sentence, we’ll darn well have them.

A few days ago I posted the Novato Police log from the local newspaper
because it had a few funny recorded activities. I asked if the NPD ever had to do any real police work (as a joke, not a shot against them), and while this article says it was the Marin County Sheriffs department’s bust it still shows that some stuff goes down in Novato.
