Suggestions for a visitor?
Hey everyone -- I'm crossing over the bay from McCovey Chronicles...and I come in peace.
I was hoping for some advice. I'm planning on taking the wife to see the Giants/A's game in Oakland on June 22. It will be my first game at Oakland, and I was wondering if you have some general advice/recommendations/suggestions. Where's the best bet to park? What food would you suggest for eating at the game? Also, what section of the stadium will get me the best view for my dollar? Any other things I should know in general?
Thanks in advance. Oh, and if there's already been a post like this in the past, I apologize, just please direct me to that page.

Saags
Ignore the dumb in game commercials, the sausages are really good. The first food item I buy every year is the Atomic Hot. (Ummm…atomic hot.) For a good beer (no chardonnay sippin’ comments here) go to The Field on the first level somewhere behind home plate. Guinness, Bass, Smithycks, Black & Tan, it’s all good. As for transportation/parking, I’m sure many will point how convenient BART is. But I suggest you drive and park in one of the many dark corners around the Coli. And make sure you wear some Gints gear so we know we have a visitor amongst us. You’ll be okay. Really.

Hi Unleash
I recommend taking bart and get off at the Coliseum station. Parking at the Coli lot was $15 last year and maybe more this year.
As far as seats I think the bleachers are the best deal for the money but get there early because it’s open seating.

sections 225 (third base side) and 208 (first base side)
single game seats are $24, and the view is pretty good. If you want to spend a bit more the plaza infield seats are nice especially sections 215-218.
I second the ribs. Also, I like Kinder’s sandwiches, pastrami sandwiches in Field’s Irish Pub, and the pulled pork sandwiches on the first level.
Take BART to the game.

BART
I agree that BART is the best way to go.
But if you want to drive, come early and park in the lot ($15). You can park in the Coliseum BART lot, too, usually fine, but I have had/known of vandalism of cars in that lot.
Sections 215-219 are good, (yes, OaklandSi!) 217 is right behind the plate ($35).
I like the Saag’s chicken parmesan dogs…you can also eat/drink in the Westside club w/o any special ticketing.

Shocking!
We don’t disclose the location of the Secret VIP Lot to Giants fans! …..of course, it does help to drive a 1988 Toyota Camry if you want to park in the Secret VIP Lot.

Bring in food
They let you bring in whatever food you want, provided you don’t bring in any glass bottles — one of the many perks of being an A’s fan. Go to your favorite SF deli, or if you’re driving stop by the In-N-Out near the stadium. I think the chicken fingers behind 117 are a good bet if you are used to Giants games and enjoy paying way too much for your food.
by swatnick on Apr 1, 2009 2:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
that's pretty nice of them
however, we’re not from the area and we like to make a point to eat food from each stadium to see what they have to offer. SF food is pretty pricey, yes, but it’s pretty darn good.

Maybe we all shouldn't assume the food is identical to prior years?
Maybe there will be something new and wonderful to dine on, that will only become known to us after this weekend. All you can eat tempura? A new species of sausage? Ice cream of the even-further-out-future?

Really, the best advice is to come early.
Esp because you want to buy Coloseum food. The walkways can get pretty cramped and no one enjoys a line. I also echo the BART suggestion, though I’ve never parked there.
by GoldenStateGuerrero on Apr 1, 2009 6:02 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Garlic fries are better in Oakland than they are in SF
But to avoid the lines, go to the garlic fries stand on the second deck, 3rd base side, rather than the one on the first level behind home plate. Much less crowded….

Arrival Time
I second the suggestion to arrive early; take in BP, walk around the park and pick up your food so you don’t miss too much of the game once the concession lines get long. Seating: I like what is mislabeled Field Level, but you may want to economize. The screen annoys me, so I try to get just to its left or right—-and keep my eyes open. Bringing food definitely saves $.

I agree about taking BART
If your location in SF is such that it’s massively inconvenient to get to BART and so you’ll be driving across the bridge, you might consider parking at the Fruitvale station and stopping in at the Vietnamese deli in the Fruitvale Transit Village for some good banh mi and spring rolls. If time permits you might also like coffee and beignets at the beignet shop; I think they’re best eaten on the premises because after about ten minutes they’re just a cold doughnut.
Or pay $15 to park at the Coliseum and suffer from tailgate envy.
If you want to eat at the stadium, I second the recommendations for Kinder’s, the other BBQ stand (although eating ribs and potato salad from a paper plate in one’s lap is a challenge), the pulled pork sandwiches, and Saag’s. The salads and cold sandwiches from the place near the Round Table stand are okay, and the latte vendor in the same section is good for chilly nights. Definitely to be missed: the fish and chips and popcorn shrimp; it was good the first year and nasty since then. If you don’t want an A’s souvenir cup, it is cheaper and easier to buy soft drinks from the guy in the BART station. There are several stalls and vendors selling lemonade, which is tasty.
Still hungry on the way home? If you parked at the Coliseum, there’s an In-N-Out across the freeway in the complex with the Wal-Mart.
by Englishmajor on Apr 1, 2009 7:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
+1 Vietnamese deli at Fruitvale
And you’ll only spend about $3.50 per sandwich.
by Rocktopus on Apr 1, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
+1 on parking at fruitvale bart
you’ll be pulling out of the bart station when people in the coliseum lots are still gridlocked….and if you’re hungry on the way home after ribs, pulled pork, and saags, i’m going to be impressed.

food question
I am serious here. I am a vegan, have been one for 11 years ( and a vegetarian for 17) and I do not know what the heck pulled pork is. What is pulled pork?

delicious
typically it’s smoked pork, cooked for a very long time, until it flakes apart. It can be done with a crock pot.
Carolineans make the best pulled pork, served with a mustard-vinegar barbecue sauce.
I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

by the way, Fruitvale BART parking costs $2 (if it hasn't gone up)
I park in MacArthur BART station as it’s more convenient to where I live, plus it’s free after 3 pm and on weekends (and only $1 otherwise) — but then you’d miss the Vietnamese deli…

I think it says alot about the fanbase here on AN that not one of
you suggested driving and tailgating. Tailgating is what sets the A’s apart from almost any other team in baseball. Bloggers don’t enjoy a few cold ones?

Doesn't seem like an option for a person visiting the Coliseum for the first time.
Especially if that person is going with his wife and his wife only.

but then everyone else in the car wants a hot dog, and it gets all awkward.

Tailgating
Never been a big fan of it myself, but what is with the groups I see tailgating as I go in, and they are still there as I exit? It can’t simply be alcohol.

I like to tailgate.
But when I do I usually get too drunk to concentrate on the game. Mostly I just chug a quick one as I cross the bart bridge.

Question for you roscoe, I drink coming accross the Bart Bridge as well, but I am unclear
as to when you can legally crack one open. Never get any flack but just curious where/when exactly the drinking can begin.
by 33SwisherSweet on Apr 2, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it's really legal.
But once at the top of the stairs it’s usually safe. I think it’s only the cops to look out for on the bridge. Just make sure you finish by the end of the bridge and before you reach the plaza.
by roscoe on Apr 2, 2009 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's an interesting question.
The matter of legality is going to be determined by whatever gov’t entity controls the walkway. I imagine that would fall under the jurisdiction of BART PD. Without knowing for sure, I’d say that there is probably a muni code that prohibits alcohol consumption in all areas controlled by BART. As an agency priority, I would imagine that they would take a dim view of drinking in any area where they are responsible for enforcement and much more likely to enforce the law.
On a side note, I also imagine that drinking is prohibited in the parking lot. But Oakland PD seems to ignore it all together. Priorities I suppose.

I believe that game is on a Monday. It gets pretty cold at the coliseum at night but of course you know the weather because your from S.F. Not sure of the weather at night in June. Take Bart early. Sit in the lower level, its much warmer because of the food on cold nights and you wont be bothered by the bugs that literally try to kill you on summer nights on the second level. Wherever you go in the coliseum is great and a wonderful deal though. Try the fish and chips, so yum.

the bugs swarm over our heads in 215. Usually night games. I really wish I knew why.

The bug thing is weird.
Last year they swarmed sec. 218-219. But only for one game and I never saw them again.
by roscoe on Apr 2, 2009 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the second level ..
wherever those huge lights are at, especially when its hot. I guess they’re attracted to the lights, but the bugs are so annoying. They look like giant ants on the ground and they fly too.
by SportySyd on Apr 2, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
BART is very convenient
but be forewarned if you have any claustrophobic tendencies that the walk back over the bridge can be overwhelming right after the game. If you park at the Coliseum you want to park in the lot closest to your seats: Lot A (66th Street) if you are on the third base side, Lot B (Hegenberger) if you are on the first base side.
As for food, I’m partial to the Saag’s sausages. Linguica or Hot Link. :) They’re relatively inexpensive (compared to the other ballpark fare), and very tasty, especially since they are served hot off the grill rather than pre-wrapped. The fish and chips are also good.
