DLD (4/1/09): Nico is Famous
Many A's fans were happy to hear the team may remain in Oakland, their home of 41 years.
"I'd love to see them stay in the city where they belong," said Nico Pemantle, who manages a fan Web site called Athletics Nation. "But I have sympathy for the owners. There's a lot of passion among A's fans to keep them in Oakland, but there's also a lot of empty seats at the Coliseum."
Free agent designated hitter Frank Thomas is reportedly not quite ready to retire, according to a report by FoxSports.com.
Thomas, 40, has not set a deadline to decide his future and will wait until the All-Star break before making any other determinations.
That's all I got, dump away!

I don't know if Nico's got another year in him.
But it was nice to see Big Frank’s vote of support for staying in Oakland.

Great, babs
you gonna pay for it?
and do you measure that wonderful support from the people of Oakland based on empty seats in the Coliseum when the team is contending?
I vote for relocating the team to Boston for personal reasons. Otherwise, I’d love to see them stay in Oakland . . . IF THEY COULD AFFORD TO. But they can’t. And they won’t.
ergo my sigline.

Selig's mission in life is.. without a doubt
pleasing Barbara Boxer.

You know, it might be kind of interesting to read

"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers."
Politicians need to stick to working on issues they have some knowledge about (which could possibly be nothing)
and quit the grandstanding and making idiotic recommendations (A’s staying in Oakland/dealing with Dellums) and making cameo appearances (see Oakland Police Funeral).

Hah. Not a chance.
In Chicago there may be rampant corruption….but at least they’re competent.

My GOG (Guess-the-Outcome Game) fANpost has aged its way off of the list on the right-hand sidebar, but there is still plenty of time to make your predictions.
Also, GOG #01 will be coming soon — Friday maybe? — so keep your eyes peeled.
Thanks colin
I think a lot of people are waiting (like me) to make their guesses. I mean we don’t actually know the starting rotation yet!

Interesting trade
I wonder if this has something to do with the 40-man roster crunch. I could see the PTBNL being one of the fringe guys like Gray or Schroder. I kind of doubt the chance to acquire Rocky Roquet was the main factor behind this trade.
Patterson?

Yes, I tried it.)

do you guys want the a's to stay in oakland,
or would a vicinity move be cool?
I don't like you Detroit.
In short
As an Oakland native who has rooted for the team for my entire life (well, since age 4 or 7, depending on when I can justify calling myself a fan) I would prefer Oakland. However, if the team has to go to San Jose or Fremont or whereever in order to remain in the bay area then I am cool with it and will live with it while remaining a fan. I certainly prefer that to moving out of area, which would cause me to no longer be a fan……..
I don’t live in the Bay Area anymore (or California… or the US) but my fandom is tied to being from Oakland, just like the A’s.

Pretty much exactly how I feel.
I grew up a Yankee fan, and dumped them for the A’s when I moved out to Oakland. Oakland means something to me, even though I don’t live there anymore.

“but there’s also a lot of empty seats at the Coliseum.”
There are also a lot of empty seats in many ball parks that are newer and have teams that win 70 games and don’t tarp off the third deck.

Yeah, but it's not fair to say
that Oakland fans generally come out in big numbers. They don’t. There are 12,000 fans for a lot of weeknight games – it’s just a fact.

The thing about "rooting" against Oakland...
It’s difficult to do when there are so many nice people on this site who are passionate about the city. To be fair, the population of the city itself is not that large, yet I suspect the residents have supported the A’s far out of proportion to their actual numbers.
Although none of that changes the fact that SJ would be far more beneficial to the team as far as business goes.

Heck, Atlanta wasn’t even selling out playoff games, when Oakland was selling Mt. Davis seats to thiers.

We did lead the League in attendance in 1990'ish:
We have also turned a profit every year, a pretty nice one, actually, and in these economic times are in a better financial situation than teams with albatross’s of Stadium payments hanging over their heads. The team only pays 500k a year for the Coliseum.
The tarps have hurt attendance…Period. That was ownerships call.
Putting the Town down will hurt it too. Those are on Lew.

Totally agree with both those last two sentences
The A’s did draw well in the Haas family era. It took a winning team, and an incredibly community minded and philanthropic ownership, to pull it off but the Haas family proved that it’s possible.
