Ervin Santana on the DL

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/rumors/post/Angels-say-Santana-could-open-season-on-DL?urn=mlb,146691

Angels keep pace with the A's rotation, and like Duke, it's an elbow issue whose initial diagnosis is not too troublesome. These elbow ligament injuries can be nagging, however... and we may not be hearing the last of it.

Now that a spot may be opening up in the halo rotation, Pedro Martinez may be finding himself a more viable free agent. It also may be good reason for us to take a closer look at making him an offer.

Latest news is it's worth that it was thought before...

From Will Carrol at BP:

" Bad news on Ervin Santana. He has a "small" tear in his UCL. He’ll rest and undergo treatment before a decision is made on the next step. Surgeons disagree on how complete a tear must be before doing Tommy John surgery, in large part because every arm is different. More, the forces put on those arms are different. Santana’s going to be risky, even if he’s able to come back. Very few pitchers are effective in the short term, with many showing control issues."

tru

it’s a very high impact motion… especially when you consider how many throws a pitcher makes between warm ups, bull pen, games, practices etc.

Process vs. Results

From the other thread, Santana’s newly minted contract might be the perfect example of when the process was good but the results might not be if Santana misses a lot of time or doesn’t return as the same pitcher.

Saunders is now in question

Left-hander Joe Saunders is still showing the effects of shoulder tightness that slowed him earlier this spring. And while he said his shoulder issues are not serious, the Angels remain concerned, according to the Los Angeles Times.

this AL West race is getting hot before the season has even kicked off.

Possible Saunders Injury

I want nothing more than for Saunders to be healthy ALL year. I don’t want any excuses when re regresses to his true level—- 4.50era. He won the lottery last year, and boy did the Angels fanboys eat it up.

as for Pedro...

according to rosenthal, he is too rich for Oakland’s blood…

One executive tells Rosenthal Pedro Martinez seeks a contract similar to the one John Smoltz received (a $5.5MM base plus $5.5MM incentives). Rosenthal’s speculative candidates for Pedro include the Dodgers, Marlins, Indians, and Mets. He says the A’s, Orioles, Nationals, and Brewers are out.
