D L D - 3.9.09 - Case of the Mond-A's
Mondays are no fun.
Editorial in the SJ Merc: San Jose leaders must work together in pursuing the A's
Public participation early is critical here because the previous administration, while identifying a great site for baseball, railroaded the idea with too little involvement by neighbors. A ballpark can't be built without community support. Even if no public money goes into it, a public vote is inevitable for a project this big.
We believe San Jose residents would like having the A's play downtown. They've seen the Sharks and the arena enrich city life. And while some neighbors will fight a ballpark, others have moved downtown for a more urban experience. Condos near AT&T Park in San Francisco don't suffer from proximity to that great ball field.
Old man Randy Johnson shakes fist at A's, Giants win
Also, the A's triumphed over the Indians. Brett Anderson went 2 2/3 allowing two hits and striking out one.
via mlb.mlb.com
"The better hitters I face, the calmer I am," Anderson said. "Every time out it feels a little better, especially when I start and can get back on a routine."
Anderson is in the mix for one of two spots in the A's rotation.
"There are so many talented guys going for those spots I can't think about it like that," Anderson said. "Most guys have never seen me so I wanted to come in and showcase what I can do."
Oakland manager Bob Geren liked what he saw.
"He was very solid," Geren said. "After a leadoff walk he pitched well. He's not afraid to pound the inside part of the zone."
SF Chron's Bruce Jenkins says what most of us already know, that "Moneyball" is pretty much passé now.
But it was fascinating to watch Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra stroll into a conference room together for a news conference at Phoenix Stadium the other day. These are quality veterans with a mural of postseason history, and Beane's strategy - waiting until he could sign each man at a one-year bargain - was masterful.
He might not be through, either. The A's draw ever closer to a team capable of passing the Angels in the AL West ("We want to take over," as Cabrera said), and another starting pitcher or two just might do the trick.

Didn't see this posted, but here's a great story from Joe Posnanski about a Royals scout
Six months later, Art Stewart was at a ballgame, and he saw another scout making a move on a beautiful young woman. He heard the woman spurn him by saying, "There’s only one team, and that’s the New York Yankees." Art worked for the New York Yankees at the time. He stepped in.
North Carolina def. Duke, 79-71. Also... can someone who knows more about college basketball help me with this? If this Stephen Curry guy is such a great player, how come he didn't go to a better basketball school? Was he not that good in high school, did he have character/work ethic issues, etc.? I keep hearing about him.

So if I get a midget
(either through legal channels or perhaps something far darker), would he dance around me like that? Like if I wanted to go down to the 7-11 for a Slurpee and a Big Bite, would he prance around me the whole way there? Could I get him to wear the jester outfit?

Cheapest way for HD CSN-CA
Does anyone have Dish network and able to get CSN-CA (in HD) for less than $55/month? I have to bundle a bunch of packages to get it. (Where’s a la carte dammit?)
Whats the word with DirecTV and CSN-CA? Still not going to carry it for Bay Area people?
I really don’t want to go with Comcast. Are there any other cable or sattelite providers I can go with in Milpitas?

kind of strange. I’m very close to the road and the road’s a busy road, and the county’s pretty much a bunch of a-holes, just vulturing around, waiting to write tickets, so signage outside the sign shop’s kind of uninspired. Though for Christmas, I did do a big picture of a bunch of dachshunds with the words “Happy Holidays from all the Weenies at Quiksigns”

Stephen Curry
He wasn’t recruited by any ACC school for a scholarship. Even his dad Dell Curry’s alma mater, Virginia Tech, only offered a walk-on spot. Curry was rail thin and not terribly athletic, and it was thought – incorrectly – that his only skill was shooting. To the contrary, he was a good point guard in high school and has shown those skills this season. Unfortunately for Curry, his Davidson team was eliminated in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament. He won’t be in the Big Dance this year.

Davidson can still be in the NCAA tournament if they get an At-large bid

His brother Seth is pretty good too
I saw him play in person when Liberty played Clemson early in the season and was impressed. I don’t think he was offered a scholarship by Virginia or VT either, which is mind boggling – I can sort of understand VT, but Virginia is terrible and could certainly have afforded to take a chance on him.

Good thing we have Nomar
He can play 3rd. Hell, if needed, he can platoon with Crosby. Nomar can play against righties, and lefties, and the ambidextrous; and Crosby can play some in spring training when the games don’t matter. Perfect!

I think Bobby can field that position well, if he commits to it, and I thought his swing looked pretty good. 11 years in the majors; only 7.9 if you add games played/162.
I love how rehab has been awesome, how he’s been looking great, amazing even all spring….until he is scheduled to take the field…..
(ps. i like Chavez. I cross my fingers every year that he’ll rebound to former status. But I am running out of fingers to cross and slowly forgetting what he is capable of—-injury seems to be his most consistent contribution—-and this triggers a deep dark rage within.)

First 11 Cuts:
The Oakland A’s today optioned pitcher Jeff Gray to Triple-A Sacramento. The A’s also reassigned non-roster invitee pitchers Brett Hunter, Jared Lansford, Arnold Leon and Tyson Ross; catcher Josh Donaldson; and infielders Tagg Bozied, Adrian Cardenas, Chris Carter, Yung-Chi Chen and Jemile Weeks to their minor league camp.
Oh, and there were 11 cuts today, by the way. No one thought to be in contention for a roster spot, although I have to say that a lot of scouts ask about Jeff Gray all the time. They’re always surprised he’s not on the big-league club. There was a lot of hope this offseason that the A’s would leave him unprotected, the interest is so high.
