What to do with Crosby?
The A's have found themselves in a very interesting position having 2 starting shortstops from last year on their roster. Bobby Crosby is number 2 on the list and apparently is not pleased about it. He has asked for a trade apparently but the real question and discussion that I am interested in having is what should the A's do? They tried to put Crosby on waivers and nobody wanted him, and now Crosby wants them to trade him to a team that needs a "starting shortstop". So what does everyone think does Bobby Crosby deserve an opportunity to be a starting shortstop? Should the A's acquiese to Crosby's wishes? Is there even a team out there that would want Bobby Crosby? Or should the A's just go into the season with him as a utility of player of sorts coming off the bench and deal with the possiblity that he might not be happy?
Personally I think that the A's should keep Bobby Crosby as injury protection because as we are all aware of the A's injury problems. Let's face it our infield isnt getting any younger, we have a starting infield of Jason Giambi (38), Mark Ellis (31), Chavez (31), and Cabrera (34). The two youngest have probably the most extensive injury history and the oldest of the group has some injury history as well. If Crosby was not in the fold you would basically be relying on Nomar who is getting up there in years with injury history as well and a group of guys who are young and unproven or have shown they are not very good. Crosby has never duplicated the type of year he had his rookie year but some of that goes with injury history but at least we know he is capable of playing at this level and it would be really nice to have him as the replacement for days off for the starters as well if an injury strikes, which is basically inevitable. On top of this I don't believe anyone wants him so there will not be any trade offers and basically if the A's were to trade him it would be out of respect for Bobby. Personally I think he is more valuable to a team that is showing signs of wanting to go for the division as a replacement player then what the A's would get in return for him in a trade, which likely would only be a half bucket of balls and half his salary paid for....
So what does everyone else think about the situation with Crosby? should he stay or should he go? Whats better for the team? etc.

Hm
I’d say he could definitely start for Kane County.
Actually, he wouldn't
Either Jason Christian or Dustin Coleman will be starting for Kane County. One of those two will be starting for Stockton, most likely as well. Cardenas will be at AA Midland. Pennington will be at Sacramento.
How about the Arizona Rookie League? Oh wait, Nino Leyja is there.

Crosby's main limitation as an A's backup infielder
(besides not being a good baseball player) is that he has never previously played 1B, 2B, or 3B, and O. Cabrera usually plays about 160 games/year at SS.

Aw, c'mon
He ain’t been that bad. His reaction has been pretty typical of a longtime starter: I’ll play my butt off while I’m here, but I’d prefer to play everyday somewhere else. I’m alright with that.
I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.
Yeah, I can't really blame Croz here
Who wouldn’t want to play every day instead of be humiliated by sitting for the team he has started for over the past 5 years?

I'm alright with that, except for his idea that there's a team that wants him

I don't see how he's acting like that
“But I still think I can be a shortstop somewhere. Ideally, that’s what I want to do. In the meantime, I’m under contract with the A’s. I’m going to go out there and play for my teammates here. And play hard for them.”
…
“I understand the whole process as it goes along,” Crosby said. “I understand I cleared waivers. I understand they have to do something. I’m just going to wait and see. I’m not going to bash the A’s. They just decided to move on. It’s as plain and simple as that. I don’t have to be happy with it. In fact, if I was, they’d probably think something was wrong.”
He wants to be a starting SS, and he’s upset that he no longer is. Every player in his situation would feel that way. So why are people demanding that he lie about the way he feels so he can spout some PR cliches instead?

Please stop putting words in my mouth
I don’t expect him to be happy with it. I don’t expect him to want to learn new positions. I do expect him to realize that nobody else seems to want him. He says he understands, but if he did, being outspoken about trade demands as if it were much of a possibility contradicts those words.
Exactly
Asking to be traded, in this situation, suggests either a delusional lack of self-awareness or that his comments are little more than selfish, petulant venting. Either way, all he’s doing by bitching to the press is damaging his own image even further.

It certainly doesn’t seem to be the former (“I understand the whole process as it goes along. I understand I cleared waivers.”) As to the latter, of course he’s upset and would like to be traded if another team comes calling—why do you want him to lie about that?

Why do I want him to lie about it?
Because I care about the A’s, and don’t give a rat’s ass about Bobby Crosby’s hurt feelings. If his whinging forces the A’s to make a stupid roster move like releasing him, I will be extremely irritated.
As it is, it’s already eroding whatever miniscule leverage the A’s might have had to get something for him in return (even if it’s only an organizational player and a million off his salary). Anyone who wants him can just sit around and wait for him to become such a clubhouse cancer that the team has to release him.

I think you understimate front offices
1) The A’s aren’t going to be forced into doing anything by Crosby.
2) Every team’s GM knows how competitive and egotistical baseball players are. Every front office surely knows that every player in Crosby’s position feels the way he feels—whether they say it or not.
3) I don’t see any reason to think that Crosby is—or will become—a clubhouse cancer. He hasn’t said a single bad word about the organization or any other players, and he’s not whining about how he should be starting over Cabrera. What he has said is that he’ll bust his ass in whatever role he’s in.

I don't think it's optimistic

Now you're just making stuff up
My position is that other front offices know exactly what is going on here… and that knowledge will, to the extent that any of them are interested in picking up Crosby at all, cause them to hold out until Crosby’s whining and attitude forces Beane to get rid of him.
The A’s have already had to lecture Crosby about his role with the team once. I suspect it will not be the last time.

Many players become role players late in their careers so they can play longer.

Not only do I have no problem with him feeling the way he does, but...
…I would be disappointed in him if he didn’t feel that way.
Having said that, I do believe he should not have said anything publicly. It doesn’t help the team, and I don’t believe it helps his cause, either. It just makes him look whiny and out of touch with reality as he had no takers precisely because he has been such a huge disappointment.
I could prove God statistically. Take the human body alone - the chances that all the functions of an individual would just happen is a statistical monstrosity.

Exactly
What the hell did he expect he would gain by going to the press? A fan revolt by the legions of Bobby Crosby faithful out there?
The only conclusion I see, apart from simple idiocy (which is certainly a possibility) is that he is hoping to force the team into releasing him so that he can stand a better chance of getting a job elsewhere. The new team would only have to pay him the league minimum, which would probably open up a number of possible destinations.
It’s a tricky game he’s playing— he has to be just annoying enough to get released without being so annoying that he acquires a reputation as a permanent malcontent.

waivers vs trade.
Possibly, he’s more attractive in a trade where the receiving team could ask the A’s to pick up a portion of his salary, as opposed to picking him up on waivers and assuming his contract. (see: Mark Kotsay)
I don’t that 15 teams would be interested in his services, or that he’s acting like there’s 15 teams that would love to trade for him, but he’s certainly better than /someone’s/ starting SS this season. As bad as he is at the plate, he’s adequate in the field.
still Swish Fan #1.
I think there were only 5 teams Crosby would start for
…assuming Bobby hit like he did the last 3 years. Typically, Bobby was only a marginal improvement. In a lot/most/all cases, it was for a team that wasn’t going to compete, so why even bother to make a move that may be a lateral move for at most 1 win (why wouldn’t they have gone after Cabrera at his low rate?). And these non-competitive teams may have a younger SS they are trying to groom for the future.
If Crosby has a hot Spring or some team has an injury, he might convince some GM he’s the hitter he was in 2004 and 2005. But right now, he doesn’t look much better than the 25th best SS in baseball.

2 Uses for Crosby
1. Between 2B and SS there are 324 games.
I don’t see Ellis/Cabrera playing all 324 due to injury or necessary rest.
There is room for Crosby to start 70-80 games even if everyone is healthy (with Cabrera moving over to 2B).
2. Wait until any contender’s SS goes down with an injury ( Reyes, Jeter, etc.) and then work a trade for a good prospect. We’re already on the hook for his salary, so why not get something for him?
Crosby's not tradeable at the moment
but if he does what is asked of him, and keeps working on getting better he’ll get his time — and increase his value so that a club in need might consider him sometime during the season.
He also helps himself if he stops complaining — at least within earshot of reporters, and probably within earshot of management.
Crosby is Tradeable for the right injury
ARod is about to have surgery. The Yankees might be interested. It’s a good thing that the A’s signed Nomar a few days ago.
I'd be surprised if they came calling for Crosby before Hannahan

Huh??
Room for him to start 70-80 games “even if everyone is healthy”? You’re saying that for nearly half the games on the A’s schedule it is preferable to start Crosby over one of the best defensive second basemen in the league Whether or not he plays SS or 2B??
No, that will not happen. He might start 20-30 games if everyone is healthy— but his more important value is as an injury hedge— if Cabrera goes down he can play short; if Ellis goes down, shift Cabrera to SS.
70 Games
If Ellis AND Cabrera are both healthy enough to play 127 games each, there are still 70 starts for the back-up. What are the odds that BOTH will play more than that?
Even if Cabrera can play all 162, it might make him more productive to get him some days off, not to mention the days that he will have to play 2B

Sell him to Japan
The A’s should ship him to Japan and pay 3/4 of his pay. This would free up a spot on the team and Crosby can complain as much as he wants without anyone knowing what he says. Could you imagine him complaining and one of his teammates says “what is that crazy american saying now?” “maybe he is trying out for a game show?” The dugout erupts with laughter and Crosby is wondering whats so funny. Its you crosby.

Trade him for a stating pitcher
The A’s should trade him the Boston Red Sox. The A’s could trade Crosby and possibly Josh Outman or another starter for Jon Lester. He was 16-6 with a 3.21 era and a 1.27 whip with an amazing 152 strikeouts. This acquisition would allow the A’s to have some relief on the rotation after the possibility of Justin Duchscherer going on the DL to start the season.
I'm sure Boston would jump all over that...

With Duchscherer out, I really think the A's need to play hardball
and trade Crosby to the Red Sox and Padres for Lester and Peavy.

Uh, did you miss the part where the Dodgers have Furcal and Hudson?
Why would the Yankees want him? Hell, even the Royals have a better player.
Trade Crosby and eat most of his salary
It will be better for the A’s clubhouse if the A’s trade Crosby. Crosby won’t be happy as a backup here. Cabrera is always healthy, so Crosby will likely get no playing time at SS. And we shouldn’t move Cabrera to 2B to appease Crosby occasionally.
Unless another team has an injury or if Crosby has a superb Spring, it will be tough finding a taker. He’s a bottom of the order guy and his defense is only above average.
It was Musical Chairs for SS this off-season, and Cabrera almost found himself with no takers. That’s why Cabrera fell into our laps for just $4 million.
I couldn’t find a SS last year with 400 PAs that Crosby would displace. I think we need to sit around and wait for an injury. Greene did have a worse year, but that was likely an aberration, and the Cards just signed Greene as a free agent.
The Pads got Eckstein (and had Rodriguez)…Crosby may be slightly better (unless he really starts hitting like he did 3 years ago)…but the Pads aren’t spending money and don’t seem to want to try to win…and they already added Eckstein.
The Orioles picked up Cesar Izturis for his defense. Maybe a 7 inning/2 inning platoon of Crosby and Izturis would help them. But the O’s probably aren’t competitive this year…and they already signed Izturis.
While it’s tough for Bobby to take, he just may not deserve to start anywhere in the majors at SS…unless he proves he can hit like he did 3 years ago. And his attitude isn’t helping his tradability factor…especially since there’s a good chance he’ll be a backup with his new team.
And when you’re a SS who can’t hit, there aren’t many positions for you to go.
Here's the problem: The A's are trying to trade Crosby
and eat most of his salary and teams still aren’t interested. Probably because they figure they’ll get a crack at Crosby for free soon when the A’s give up and release him for the roster spot.
A question: If the A’s send Crosby to Sacramento and he refuses the assignment (as he can), becomes a free agent and signs elsewhere, what happens to the $5.25million? If by refusing the assignment he gives up the contract, then the A’s should just send him to AAA to start the season and let him play some 2B, 3B, and LF.

Crosby was the 10th best defensive SS last year
I underestimated Crosby. So we might find a match for Crosby with a team with a poor fielding SS. Of course, that’s likely a backup role for Bobby. Pads and Eckstein seems like the best match. The DBacks and Drew. The Mariners’ Betancourt had really bad defensive stats last year. I thought he was a decent SS.
I think if Crosby signs somewhere else, it’s for the league minimum and the A’s are on the hook for the remaining $4.85 million. There might need to be a 10-day waiting period on waivers before another team can get him for the league minimum. He’s gotta be worth $1 million to somebody, so we’d do better to just take a deal like that (Crosby and cash for a non-prospect or a bag of balls).

Crosby's contract really isn't that terrible
It’s a one-year deal and $5.5 million just isn’t a whole lot in baseball terms. It’s certainly more than he’s worth, but it’s not some huge albatross like the Zito deal. It’s probably not one of the 50 worst contracts in baseball right now.
Funny dodger fans
On one website a bunch of dodger fans said the A’s should trade Crosby to the dodgers for Juan Pierre and the A’s throw in a pitching prospect. So if the A’s are just getting rid of pay why would they want to take on more? No it will not happen. If Crosby utility work pans out watch him being traded to the cubs with the A’s picking up 2/3 of his pay. To bad major league can’t be like other sports and the A’s buy out the contract.
I don't think it's that no team wants Crosby
I just think that the few teams that would like him believe they can get him for $400,000, without losing a player of their own, because the A’s will release Crosby eventually. And he’s a small enough upgrade from what they have that if they don’t get him, oh well.

Why? Because they have to pay anyone they have $400K
and Crosby is a potential upgrade for several teams as a backup infielder if not as a starter (e.g., San Diego, STL, Toronto).

I guess the way it's shaping up, the four bench spots go to
Nomar, backup catcher, Rajai Davis, and Crosby, with Denorfia and Barton (and Cunningham) stashed away at AAA, up only if someone gets injured or demoted. Crosby’s playing time comes when Ellis needs a break.
I could see them going with that for a while, I suppose. I’m just thinking that come May, if Denorfia or Barton is tearing it up, the A’s may decide to call one of them up at Crosby’s expense and have Nomar serve as emergency SS (Cabrera to 2B). This probably depends greatly on whether it looks like Ellis can play every day or whether he’ll need regular breaks, and to some degree same with Chavez.
What may save Crosby from being released is the fact that the A’s have two infielders who will almost certainly need some time off. If the A’s could reasonably expect both to play 150 games, I think Oakland might carry just one backup INF.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I doubt Ellis will play every day early in the season
so Crosby is most likely to get chances there. He may also get some chances elsewhere on the infield, including coming in late in the game. Nomar will likely get starts at first and third when an opposing lefty pitcher is starting, or coming in later to pinch hit for one of those position when a lefty reliever comes in. Chavvy will also get eased in at third, so it’s quite possible that Crosby will see some time there as well (not necessarily starting a game, but coming in later).
He’s not likely to get much time at SS since Cabrera plays just about every day — he played 161 games last season! However, Crosby could play SS if they decide to move Cabrera to second occasionally, again to ease in Ellis.,,,and Crosby could also see time at first. On Saturday he was also practicing there.
The injuries and possibility that Ellis won't be ready for opening day are why I think he won't be released
If the A’s can’t find someone to trade for him, they’ll just keep him on during spring training just in case. And he might even break camp with the team, again, just in case. I don’t see them releasing him until they need that roster spot or he complains enough.
What to do with Crosby...
Where’s the nearest woodshed?
Assuming that’s not an option, trade him and $5 million to whomever offers the best prospect. Crosby’s new team would be on the hook for $250K, which is an even better deal than the vet minimum Crosby would earn as a FA.
I think at this time it’s better for all involved if the A’s quit trying to make Crosby into something he’s not and for everyone to move on.
