A's STILL fighting injury bug
Maybe I'm overreacting a little bit, but it's troublesome that several of the A's players have some major health concerns. These players are also expected to contribute a great deal this year.
- Duke - elbow problem and hasn't pitched (always battles injuries)
- Devine - elbow problem (always battles injuries)
- Chavez - still hasn't played in the field and we've been hearing he's ready for a week now (always battles injuries)
- Ellis - was supposed to be ready by now but still isn't throwing
- Barton - leg problem
- Giambi is always battling injuries
- Nomar is always battling injuries
- Buck is always battling injuries
- Gallagher seems to be frequently injured

I think
the additions of Springer and Wuertz and wanting to add Reyes and now possibly Beimel indicates that the A’s realize what an injury risk Devine is. Oh, and they held him back from the WBC which seems to have not mattered anyway because he’s hurt already.
I wouldn’t put Chavez on this list, yet, since he really hasn’t had any setbacks. The only people I’m really worried about is Duke and Ellis. Barton isn’t pivotal to this team’s success this year so he can start the year on the DL and it won’t matter much, if at all.

The thing is, none of those players, except Devine, were healthy
to start spring training. The A;s have actually been relatively injury free.
Honestly it does get old
I’m glad these 20 and 30 year olds don’t have real jobs and have to work through injury’s. Damn did I just say that?

Most of them probably wouldn't be dealing with injuries like these in normal jobs

Are you kidding?
Have you tried lifting that Alhambra water jug? I had Johnny Thom surgery (it’s named after a famous data entry processor) over one of those.

The cuts at the end of spring training can be especially painful

Don't sell yourself short.
There must be the occasional stapler accidents.

I'm pretty sure every baselabb player is always battling injuries in one form or another
I'm starting to like our bullpen......Wuertz and all.
Yeap. It's only a big deal when the player's name is A-Rod.

Seriously,
this has become a joke.
I know everyone on here is excited about the 2009 season, but let’s be honest…anything is an improvement over 2008!! And before all the rolling of the eyes at a “another” negative post/comment, let me just say I want the A’s to be good, and i hope they are…but we all know deep down that they are basically going to be lucky to be a 2nd-tier team in the League. Yes, they’ll likely be better than the Royals, maybe the Indians, blah, blah, blah. They will also likely miss the Playoffs, so who cares?
We have no SP (allright, very little); we still have basically an inept offense, even with the upgrades; and we are basically hoping that every break falls our way to achieve even a modicum of success…ie: injured veterans hoping to stay healthy/uninjured, young and/or inexperienced players hoping to overachieve (or learn on the job); etc. This has been the MO for the last 3+ seasons, and it is no way to be successful, regardless of the genius of the front office!!
I hope the club is great…I really do. But they will not compete this season with the League’s elite teams… Its not negative, just reality.
I am just sick of the players on this club constantly being injured, thats all. Geren has got to be one frustrated MoFo, despite his towing the company line.

that's pretty pessimistic
and i am hoping you’re incorrect
"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball
of course its pessimistic
thats the point, is it not? the club hasnt done anything to warrant much optimism since 2006, right?
Ive followed this club since 1970, and these recent seasons are as dismal as the late 70s and the mid 90s. I’m not saying they arent tooling for the future, but the future wont mean a thing if they cant have healthy players.

wow
2006 was two seasons ago, in which they re-tooled in a manner that’s looking successful thus far.
yup, we’re all gonna die.

Anything is an improvement over 2008?
I’ll assume you’re too young to see the A’s of the late 70s, mid 80s and mid 90s. 2008 wasn’t all that bad.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
Ellis wasn't supposed to be ready yet...
I thought…. {tries to remember}
I thought they said awhile ago, before spring training had started, that they didn’t expect him to be able to throw until late March, if I’m remembering right.
Awww… Unicorn's optimistic. And a cheeseball. That’s cute. ~Whiteshoes40
its even rubbing off on the fans
I am out the baseball season (San Diego adult baseball league) for the next 6months – 1 year with a torn labrum in my pitching arm……
