Yay for some Saturday baseball excitement! The WBC is here, and with that brings Team USA vs. Canada at 11am, Pacific Time.
Also, among the veteran sightings at the WBC is none other than Bernie Williams, who is playing for Puerto Rico. No word as to whether playing guitar helps you stay in shape.
One last WBC tidbit: Ichiro finally got a hit. To all Mariner's fans I want to impress this message; you can breathe now.
In other news, the A's apparently have signed Andrew Sisco. There was a fanpost about this a while back by notsellingjeans, but it looks like a good signing for such a low risk investment.
Another good piece of news for the A's here. Apparently Vlad has instantaneous aging syndrome. Here's hoping it begins to afflict Lackey as well.
In some non-related baseball sports news, Rafael Nadal is at it again. Personally, I'm still waiting for that Pete Sampras comeback.
Tiger sighting next week at WCG-CA Championship. Yay Tigers!

As I mentioned in today’s paper, Joey Devine has been sidelined for an undetermined period with elbow sorenesss. That’s a little alarming, considering his tendency to miss 4-6 weeks each year with nagging injuries. The A’s are still calling Brad Ziegler the closer, but most scouts and people around baseball figured that Devine would wind up in the role because his stuff is better suited to closing while Ziegler is perfect in a set-up role, but if Devine misses much time, Ziegler will be the guy for sure.

That worries me a lot...
Devine is just too good to do without. He says it’s his mechanics, I hope he is just being overcautious.

Still 3-2 Netherlands, going to the 9th
We could have our first big upset of this year’s WBC.

crosby doesn't like us anymore, apparently
and wants to go somewhere where he can be a starter shortstop…

problem is no other team wants him as a starting shortstop
at least not unless someone has an emergency need….and even then, a $5.5 million dollar player who has not produced may not even be a preferred emergency option.

You know,
That’s’ probably not a bad idea. I think wherever he ends up, he will do better than his record with the A’s.

i heard some astros rumor on mlbtraderumors.com
but couldn’t find the link for it since it was a few days ago. I don’t know if thats a serious rumor, though.

As awkward as it may be for Bobby,
this is exactly what I would want him to say:
“But I still think I can be a shortstop somewhere. Ideally, that’s what I want to do. In the meantime, I’m under contract with the A’s. I’m going to go out there and play for my teammates here. And play hard for them.”
He may be in denial about his abilities, but he seems like a good teammate.

Pedro tore it up today in the WBC
If he comes cheaply, why wouldn’t we give him a shot? We are probably going to need someone (unless we call up one of the MAC or Simmons), and Pedro seems like he could fit the bill quite nicely, if healthy and effective (I don’t know how much of a gauge the WBC is).

I think Beane is probably
keeping an eye on this situation, but I don’t think Pedro wants to pitch in the AL, and, I think he will probably want too much money.

I'm liking the WBC right now
USA seem to have a deep team. David Wright, Jimmy Rollins, Dustin Pedroa (however you spell it), Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones (although he is sucking and hurt right now), Roy Oswalt, Jake Peavy, J.J. Putz, Adam Dunn (he hit a BOMB the other day), Mark DeRosa.

the story with some of the teams seems to be
run up the starter’s pitch count (limit is 70 games) and get into the bullpen (anyone throwing 30+ pitches in one game can’t pitch the next day). These were some of the rules for pitching for Round 1. In Venezuela’s case yesterday, once the starter was taken out it was obvious that Venezuela doesdn’t have a very good bullpen — that’s were the USA team did its damage.
The Netherlands and Puerto Rico have decent bullpens. That’s part of how the Netherlands upset the Dominican Republic, and was leading Puerto Rico 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth. (Oh, and Bernie Williams should not be playing in the outfield — and probably shouldn’t be playing at all.)
Italy seemed to be doing well against Canada, which last I saw was on the verge of elimination.
by OaklandSi on Mar 9, 2009 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But if they don't have these counts
MLB teams would never allow their players to go. Japan and Korea might not either.
