Lansford
I thought that some of you older fans may appreciate this. I know Carney was a popular player back here in the late '80's and early 90's. I saw this article on the A's page today and I thought that in case somebody missed checking the A's site they'd like to take a look at this article. It is about father and son so that is kinda cool too.
Just a cool little article.
Let's Go Oakland!

Déjà Vu
Oakland visits Scottsdale to play a Giants split squad Sunday, and wouldn’t you know it. Lansford’s son, Jared, is on the list to pitch.
It's always good to read about Carney.
He was fun to watch . I like keeping track of the players who made a true impression during their time here. TY for posting the link.
My least favorite A's player ever
I never understood why so many people were infatuated with this guy. It must have been some sort of scrappy underdog thing. His presence on the A’s All-Century team tarnished the whole thing.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
why?
carrer .290 hitter, was .03 points away from the batting title in 81 (yeah, for boston). played good defense. he wasn’t a mcguiresque batter in the late 80’s, but he made a pretty solid contribution to those teams.
least favorite ever? jeremy giambi? johnny damon? mike piaza?
i was wrong to do that stuff
Empty batting average, not much power after his first few seasons, didn’t walk much, possibly the worst fielding regular third baseman of the 20th century (good hands, zero range). ‘81 was a strike year so his batting average in a great hitting environment in a short season isn’t very impressive. The most overrated player the Oakland A’s ever had. He was good for slapping a few singles and hustling but not much else. Sal Bando was a vastly superior player and he gets almost no credit except from the guys he played with. I’ll never understand it. I rooted for him to do well while he was here but he was frustrating to watch, especially while he was receiving so much undeserved praise. As much as Ray Fosse was in love with Jason Kendall, he’d drop Kendall in a split second for Carney Lansford. It was sickening.

bando
is definitely head and shoulders a better 3rd baseman and a more significant Oakland Athletic… i also agree that carney’s approval rating had/has much to do with the success of the team outside of his contribution. that said, there are many former A’s i’d vote off the island before him.

Lansford.
I agree there were lesser players than Lansford but there weren’t any who received the kind of undeserved credit for his team’s success that Lansford did. Only Jason Kendall comes close. I don’t really have anything against the man personally. By all accounts he was a good guy. I think it’s the combination of him receiving so much praise and his visually unappealing brand of ball (deep crouch at third base, jerky batting stance, upright running style) that irked me so much. The selfish snowmobile accident certainly didn’t improve my opinion of him. I acknowledge that he was a major contributor to the 1989 world championship. He didn’t hit for any power but he was on base frequently that year. Still, all that Carney Lansford worship, especially from Ray Fosse, and Lansford’s placement on the All-Century team make my head explode. It’s bad enough to ignore Sal Bando but how about Frank Baker? He’s in the Hall of Fame and a marginal player like Carney Lansford aces him? If I can borrow one of Ray’s expressions, Unbelievable!
