Open Thread: Spring Training Game 9 - Mariners vs. A's

After Trevor Cahill (or K-Hill, if you prefer) turned in a sparkling performance yesterday in his three innings, adding to his hype, the pressure is now on new A's pitcher Edgar González, as he throws against Jarrod Washburn and the Mariners in today's game.

According to Wikipedia, RHP González (from Mexico) signed with Arizona in 2000, but was placed on the suspended list when he didn't report for assignment in the Dominican Republic. He made his MLB debut with Arizona in 2003; the youngest pitcher in baseball at the time; at 20 years old. González bounced between AAA and the big leagues from 2003 to 2006, but was on the Diamondbacks in 2007 out of the bullpen, and 2008 as a replacement starter.

DUCHSCHERER UPDATE

from Slusser

In another note, Justin Duchscherer is back from Los Angeles and he said Dr. Lewis Yocum has recommended the same course of action as the A’s medical staff, along with a stronger inflammatory medication. Duchscherer won’t throw again until Monday, but he said if he is improved at that point, he believes he can get ready for the season quickly and be ready for Opening Night.

I don't know what the best news in that report is

The thought that Duchscherer may not be hurt that bad, or the fact that an actual expert agreed with the opinion of the A’s medical staff. Both are exciting developments.

at home I get the annoying AM buzz that I get with many stations.

I was in San Jose last week and couldn't get a strong signal there.

If ever a game should have been called on account of wind, that one was it. Good thing Jerry Blevins didn't have to pitch in that one; he's tall, skinny and still a little weak from the clubhouse bug he caught, and I could practically see one of the 40-mph gusts at Electric Park sweeping him off the bump and pinning him to the left-field fence. --Mychael Urban

Fosse just established

that working for the Giants will kill you.

Losing this team would be a huge failure for this city and an affront to Oakland’s great sports legacy.

just checked, Hammer in Italian is "martello"

(like “martillo” in Spanish), but apparently “mazza” can also be used to mean a club like a golf club or a baseball bat.

Can you take over the pxp?

If ever a game should have been called on account of wind, that one was it. Good thing Jerry Blevins didn't have to pitch in that one; he's tall, skinny and still a little weak from the clubhouse bug he caught, and I could practically see one of the 40-mph gusts at Electric Park sweeping him off the bump and pinning him to the left-field fence. --Mychael Urban
