Official Cabrera/Garciaparra Press Release

A’s Agree to Terms with Cabrera and

Garciaparra on One-Year Contracts

Star-divide

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with infielders Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra on one-year contracts, the club announced today.  To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s outrighted infielder Yung-Chi Chen to Triple-A Sacramento.  Chen will remain in camp as a non-roster invitee.

Cabrera batted .281 with eight home runs and 57 RBI in 161 games with the Chicago White Sox last year.  He also stole 19 bases and had career highs in walks (56) and strikeouts (71).  The 34-year old ranked second in the American League in singles (144), sixth in plate appearances per strikeout (10.28) and tied for sixth in hits (186).  Cabrera had a .978 fielding percentage, which ranked fourth among AL shortstops.

Cabrera made his ML debut with Montreal in 1997 and played for the Expos until he was dealt to Boston at the trading deadline in 2004 in a four-team, eight-player deal that also saw Garciaparra go from the Red Sox to the Cubs.  He played for the Los Angeles Angels from 2005-07 and spent last season with the White Sox.  The native of Colombia is a .274 career hitter with 105 home runs, 684 RBI and 184 stolen bases in 1572 games over 12 seasons.  Cabrera won Gold Gloves with Montreal in 2001 and Los Angeles in 2007 and his .981 fielding percentage since 2005 is the best among AL shortstops.  He has appeared in postseason play in four of the past five seasons, including 2004 as a member of the World Champion Red Sox.

Garciaparra is a .314 career hitter in 13 big league seasons and his batting average ranks seventh among active players.  He also has 226 home runs and 920 RBI in 1369 games.  The 35-year old made his Major League debut with Boston in 1996 and was named AL Rookie of the Year in 1997.  He finished second in AL MVP voting in 1998 and then won back-to-back AL batting titles in 1999 and 2000.  A six-time All-Star, Garciaparra remained with Boston through the trading deadline in 2004 when he was dealt to the Cubs.  He returned to Chicago in 2005 and has spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, earning NL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2006 after batting .303 with 20 home runs and 93 RBI.  Garciaparra appeared in postseason play last year for the fifth time and is a .321 hitter with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 32 career postseason games.

Garciaparra hit .264 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 55 games with the Dodgers last year in a season interrupted by three stints on the disabled list.  He has eight stints on the DL over the last five years, but has a .292 average, 53 home runs and 251 RBI in 441 games over that span.  Last year, he appeared in 31 games at shortstop, 11 at third base and eight at first base.  Garciaparra played primarily shortstop over the first nine seasons of his career, but over the last four years he has appeared in 194 games at first base, 88 at third base and 57 at shortstop.

In addition to Cabrera and Garciaparra, the A’s have also acquired Matt Holliday from the Colorado Rockies and signed Jason Giambi as a free agent since the end of the 2008 season.  Those four additions have combined for 14 All-Star games, six Silver Slugger Awards, three batting titles, two Gold Gloves, a MVP and a Rookie of the Year.  They have a .294 career average, 855 home runs, 3366 RBI and 361 stolen bases in 5489 major league games and also have 116 games of postseason experience.

Apparently (did I spell that right?)

OaklandA23 is direct representative of the Oakland A’s (or maybe just the website) so he/she doesn’t need to post a link.

Although, you think they would anyways to avoid people like me crying CGV everytime a offical release is posted.

Garciaparra at 2B?

Geren just said on the broadcast (on AM 860!) that Garciaparra said he could be play 2B. So if Ellis isn’t healthy I suspect we’d see Nomar at 2B.

contrast Nomar's saying he can play any base they ask him to

despite his reduced range and injury history…with Crosby’s telling the world he’s never played anything except ss…

Crosby thinks he has a future career to consider

Nomar is one and done. Makes sense, in a very selfish way. Like when Soriano got all pissy about playing the outfield for the Nats.

I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.

Nomar made that comment when he was a starting shortstop

when he was traded to the Cubs…he was a very productive player with seemingly a bright future. Soriano — as pissy as he was — was and is a very good offensive player.

If Crosby really wants a future in baseball he’s going to have to display a willingness to do whatever is asked of him. If he fails, he fails. But he doesn’t have any leverage — it’s not like he has a well-respected offensive resume to brag about.

Chen gets the axe

No surprises there. The A’s have made some fairly savvy waiver moves this offseason, getting both Joe Dillon and Chen into the organization at, ultimately, no significant cost.

Tangentially related question: has A’s minor league camp actually opened yet?

that confused me

didn’t they get Chen on waivers, and if so don’t they have to put him back through? Does this mean they already did and he cleared?

apparently they didn't have to put him through waivers again

he was simply outrighted to Sacramento, but remains in camp as a nonroster player, according to this article

by OaklandSi on Mar 6, 2009 12:46 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

he had to be put through waivers...

to be removed from the 40-man roster. they probably put him through a few days ago & obviously wasn’t claimed.

he went through waivers this offseason already

and the A’s claimed him.

Does he need to go through it again?

by OaklandSi on Mar 6, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yes...it was by Seattle though

If a team removes a player from the 40-man roster they MUST send him through waivers. Seattle failed to get him through waivers and Chen retained his “never been outrighted” tag. So the A’s put him through waivers probably 2-3 days ago, when he cleared waivers they outrighted him to Sacramento, he had to accept assignment because it was his first time.

Good point Paul

They basically added two good pieces to an eventual Sacramento championship team for free.

I love the A’s 40-man roster right now. They really did have a good offseason. If they could get another lefty like Mulder or Sisco in camp on a minor league deal, that would be icing on the cake.

Would you want Joe Beimel on a 1 year, $1M major-league deal? I don’t think I would. I liked Reyes, but Beimel isn’t as good.

so you want mulder in camp but you don’t want to pay beimel $1m?

He did say Mulder in camp on a minor league deal

which means Mulder would not make much unless added to the major league roster.

well I'm kind of ambivalent about all of them

but the feather in Mulder’s cap is that he was good at one point. I’m not sure Beimel ever was.

Nah

A’s don’t need more relievers. I’d rather see Outman get some low-stress bullpen work than pay even a marginal amount for a marginal upgrade. If they end up sending him into the rotation, they can call up Kilby or someone such to replace him. If he’s a long-term bullpen pitcher, well, you could do a lot worse for a left side than Blevins/Outman.

Isn't there an advantage long term for the A's...

…to push off a young player’s free agent year. If the A’s think somebody is going to be really good, they might save a free agent year by not bringing him up. I’m thinking more Cahill and less Outman, but Outman is a lesser prospect. How many AB, IP, years or whatever are needed before a young player’s free agent clock starts ticking?

I wonder if part of Beane’s free agent calculations this year included the value of keeping young players in the minors for a year longer. I wonder how often Beane brings up the 3rd or 4th best pitching prospect so as to put off a free agent year on the 1st or 2nd best pitching prospect. If you do this in down years like the last two, it probably makes us stronger contenders in the years we will contend.

I think the Mariners regretted giving A-Rod 54 ABs in 1994 and 142 ABs in 1995 since they lost him earlier than they should have. They lost him just before 2001, and that 116 win team could have actually been good with him. And with A-Rod’s offensive prowess in the playoffs, they coulda gone places. Isn’t it sad for A-Rod that the Yankees don’t put a playoff caliber team on the field so he can try to improve on his playoff stats.

Any time in the majors counts against a player's "service clock"

If you manipulate the system just right, you can ultimately have a player for six years and most of a seventh.

For good prospects like Mazzaro, Simmons, Anderson and Cahill with zero MLB service time, there is a strong, even overwhelming incentive to keep them out of the majors for the first 3 weeks or so of the season so that they will not become free agents until the end of the 2015 season at earliest. That’s where roster filler like Williams and Edgar Gonzalez comes in handy.

For the intermediate level (#3/#4-type) pitching prospects like Outman, though, I like the play of bringing them up and working them in gradually from the bullpen.

I doubt it

my guess is the A’s will want to have them doing a bit of the “getting in shape” work that position players do for the first week of spring training.

Press Conference up

On the A’s home page.

They didn’t sound too convincing to me that they want to be here, especially Cabrera. Nomar couldn’t even name Geren, “the manager.”

I don't mind much if they're not thrilled to be in Oakland

They’re on for 1 year, and Cabrera at least will be playing for his next contract. I don’t buy the “contract year” theory, but it at least assures that Cabrera won’t be half-assing it.

I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.
