So what would NYY have to give up to get Chavy
We love him...we hate his injuries. However, thanks to A-Roid getting a cyst (which I am sure has no relation to his steroid use...chortle laugh), the Spankees need a 3rd basemen and quick. Buster Olney in his infinite wisdom tossed out three names: Garret Atkins, Andy Marte, and Eric Chavez.
So, putting it out to you fellow A's fans, what would it take to give up Chavy?
I would love to get Swisher back for RF and try to get Hughes for our current rotation and give up Chavy and Mazzaro. It is obvious that Hughes has been coveted in the past, but I think those days are gone. Plus desperation makes clubs (especially the Yankees) do strange things. You help the rotation, add Swisher to shore up a solid OF, and then wonder who in the hell you can trade for to get a 3rd basemen. The Yankees might try to give Nady instead of Swisher, but neither the Indians or the Rockies would want Nady so it is not like they can deal him to another club instead. The Yankees would also get Mazzaro who is more of a prosepct than Hughes, but can help them in a year when they really need it.
Thoughts?

Doesn't make a lot of sense
I can’t see why the A’s would want Swisher (I love Swisher, but the A’s have no place for him to play currently), and I can’t see giving up Mazzaro AND Chavez to get Hughes. Also, if the Yankers want a quick answer, than Chavez probably isn’t it, as he has yet to play 3B in a spring game.
IF (and that is a big if) the Yankees wanted him, I think BB would get something like Ian Kennedy + C/C- prospect, at most.

Doesn't really make sense for either team
If the A’s were to trade Chavez, Nomar would become the A’s starting 3b. That would completely undermine the A’s trying to compete this year. The Yankees would be trading for a often injured, unproven 3b who becomes a backup in a month and would cost them 25 million. Neither team would do the deal unless one team completely screwed the other. So no deal will occur.

Ian Kennedy is something we have enough of, because at the end of the day he is Dana Eveland and Dallas Braden (and Greg Smith whome we got rid of). He is a 4th starter who might develop into a 3rd starter someday. Hughes on the other hand might be something very special, and he allows us to keep MAC (or CAM) in the minors till September.

Chavy is worth Swish straight up, and if we are throwing in Mazzaro I want someone like Colby Ramus back. (Which means he doesn’t go the the Yankees anyway)

+1 for the comment about Hughes
but you think Swisher=Crosby?
Swisher’s OPS+ in each full season is 101,125,127, 92 and he has hit at least 21 HR in each of those seasons. Plus he can play 1st and all 3 outfield positions. And of course his great personality and facial hair have to count for something right?
Crosby’s OPS+ in each full season, 93,111 (in only 333 ABs), 67, 68, 76 and he only has hit double digit HRs once. Plus he is bald and thinks he should be a starter and refuses to try other positions. (no offense Bobby C but it’s true, and I’m going bald too)

Are you talking about Crosby or Chavy? I was talking about Chavy, and even then I’d only trade the injured version of Chavy for Swish, not the good (pre ‘07) version. If Chavy really can prove he turned a corner then he’s worth more then Swish.
Swish is a good hitter, but the fact that he can’t play a premium position makes it hard to want to trade for him when we could wait a year and get players like Carter and Doolittle. They would have just as good or better numbers, and Doolittle is a better defender at first then Swish.
Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

If the Yankees wanted to overpay and give up a serious prospect or two
Then I would trade him. Garciaparra, Hannahan, Baisley, Chen, Dillon would probably make a passable 3rd baseman. Certainly they don’t have the potential of a healthy Chavez, but it wouldn’t be godawful.
But again, only if the Yankees were seriously going to overpay. And Chavez would probably block that trade, seeing as as he’ll be a backup a month or two into the season. Olney was probably just throwing at names that are available or on teams where players are always available, like Oakland. Can’t see this trade actually happening.

Not that it matters now anyways, as vignette17 said, its too damn late to get rid of him, we would have to play Hannahan and Nomar is like a cheap/worse version of Chavy

I don't know if just covering Chavvy's salary is enough
If a guy like Russell Branyan was available, I’d do the deal. But to compete this year, the A’s need more than a Nomar/Hannahan platoon at 3b. 11 million isn’t all the A’s would get, they’d also have nothing at 3b. This late in the offseason there’s not really any FAs to use the 11 mil on and no 3b makes the A’s not a playoff team. Which means trading Holliday becomes the next logical step. Cabrera nor Giambi nor Nomar nor Springer really make sense either if that’s the case. Trading Chavvy basically means the A’s should go back to full on rebuilding.

Agreed!
Let the Yankees be horrible and fall way behind the Red Sucks and Rays and Orioles. I love this! Chavvy stays!

Chavvy's health has been too precarious the last few years...
for this kind of silly speculation. Dream on…

Fun speculation time!
Isn’t it funny that ARod is now too hurt to play right before the WBC – and presumably right before the mandatory Olympic-standard drug testing. Hmmm….

If I were running the Yankees...
I’d get KC on the phone and try to get Mark Teahen. He was a decent third baseman before Alex Gordan took his job and it was recent enough that he should still be able to do the job.. Also, his versatility would make him a good player to have on the bench after A-Rod returns.

Good idea
… Teahan would be a good option because of the ability to slide into a reserve role once Pay$Rod returns. In that regard, he’s a better option for the Jankees than Chavez or Atkins, neither of whom should be in a reserve role.

I'd take A-Rod back in the deal
And throw in Crosby.
But the Yankees have to pay all three salaries.
Sound fair?
