Open Thread: Spring Training Game 7 - White Sox at A's
We have some early bad news out of camp regarding the A's opening day starting pitching:
Despite a slew of ominous signs, Geren had maintained an optimistic outlook on Duchscherer's status through Tuesday, taking solace in the fact that his ace hadn't been shut down.
Now that Duchscherer has been shut down, Geren has changed his tune.
"His Opening Day start is definitely in jeopardy," said the skipper.
But Spring Training must go on, as Dana Eveland, fifth-starter candidate Jerome Williams, and potential closer Joey Devine are all scheduled to take the mound today, and Eric Chavez is penciled in as the DH.The A's will be facing Lance Broadway, which I think might be one of the best pitcher names ever. Can you imagine Hawk with the Broadway puns?

I had just posted the lineups in a fanpost
and discovered that I could do so with it looking like the actual boxscore — cool!
However, once I saw that baseball girl had posted the game thread I of course deleted my post.
Buan is interviewing Jared Lansford on the pregame show. Young Lansford’s agent is Dave Stewart, by the way.

That IS cool!
We have a lineup widget we use for regular season games, but I don’t think it’s set up for Spring Training. Feel free to share in this thread; I’d like to see them!

I just went to the mlb.com schedule box
selected the whole box and copied. then I pasted it to the fanpost, expecting to see it with messed up formatting, which I was going to fix before publishing. But it came out just as it looks on the mlb site.

let's see if I can do it here
no, it came out with messed up formatting…I have no idea why it worked in the fanpost!

Really excited to get a look @ Williams today.
Now w/ Duke out, he becomes an even more interesting possibility.

With the Duke news
I think its time for BB to go spend 3-4m on a starting pitcher. We have no anchor with Duke doubtful. Who’s available?

Agree
We have too many SP that are basically ready. Outman and Gio, then Jerome Williams, Edgar Gonzalez can easily fill the 4, 5 until Duke comes back.

How far off from the majors is Carter projected? A year, two years?
sanity is insanities underpants...
by brian.only on Mar 4, 2009 12:35 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yes
Basically he is somewhere in that range. He will start the season in AA this year so theoretically he could play well and earn a promotion to AAA at some point during the season, putting him in position to compete for a MLB spot next spring.
Probably more likely scenario is that he spends most of the year in AA and then starts next season in AAA where he could get a shot during the season with the A’s or have to wait till 2011. He has pretty serious strike out issues which suggest he may take the slightly slower route to the majors.
I think somewhere between 1 and 2 years away is a pretty good guess for Carter. With the usual caveat that any prospect could bust and throw off any projection.

September callup this year is probably a fastest-case scenario for Chris, with starting 2010 being a remote possibility if Giambi leaves and Barton continues to suck.

Linden
franks a lot brought this guy up jokingly a while back.
I did’nt know about AN back then and was blown away that he didnt make the team w/ the the kind of ST he had. Sorry if this is old news around here, but did he just piss someone off or was he a terrible defensive player?

I believe he had inflated stats due to playing in late innings of Spring Training games
Which supported the AAAA label of his.
I am Ray Fosse's infatuations with Clay Wood and high-definition television.

I think gameday went back to the "update every half inning"
because it just shows Chavvy replaced by Ellis as a pinch hitter, but it won’t update any farther than that. grr.

I'm still waiting
For the first time that Giambi, Holliday, Cust, Chavvy, Buck, Sweeney, Suzuki, Cabrera, and Ellis hit in the same lineup. Until that happens I won’t pay close attention to ST games besides the pitching lines.

Circus...
Barton beats out a grounder, Davis rounds third, they get him in a rundown, it gets away from the shortstop as Davis gets in safely to third, Barton goes to second in the melee.
by oblique on Mar 4, 2009 2:15 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Davis over ran third, but the shortstop botched the throw. Everybody safe. 2nd and 3rd. 2 down. bot 7. 4-2 A’s.
