Chavez says he's ready for Opening Day
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap;_ylt=AmM._6dzGaI3bbt8DN_pA8KFCLcF?gid=290330119&prov=ap
He says he's ready, which makes him our Opening Day 3B, which leaves somebody off. Is it Pennington? Crosby? Nomah?!
My guess is that they send Crosby down to AAA by waiving him (let's see if anybody bites this time) to maybe work on a little 2B and 3B, because in all likelihood Chavez will get hurt again and Crosby may come back and platoon with Nomah at third. What do you all think?

Um, I thought Pennington was already removed from the equation.
Crosby and Nomar are on the roster no matter what.

He should be, but Beane loves him for some reason.

No
Here are today’s cuts: pitchers Edgar Gonzalez and Chris Schroder, infielders Gregorio Petit and Corey Wimberly, outfielder Aaron Cunningham and catcher Joel Galarraga.
Also Crosby can refuse assignment to the minors as he has 5 years of service time. If that happens he would become a free agent and the A’s would be on the hook for all of his salary except the league minimum while some other team could sign him and would only have to pay the league minimum. This is highly unlikely to happen.

Does that mean we're pretty much forced to demote Pennington
or a reliever?

There really isn't a way Pennington makes the team w/o a Crosby trade.

I'm not positive
but I think if a player refuses a minor league assignment and opts for free agency then they forfeit whatever is remaining on their contract. This is why most players in this position accept the assignment because generally a 5+ year vet who is getting sent to AAA is probably owed more than he is likely to make on the open market.

no, remember Frank Thomas
when he was waived a couple yrs ago from Toronto? Toronto ate his salary minus the minimum the A’s paid to get him.

No way Pennington makes the squad unless there is some other freak injury
to either Crosby or Nomar.

I asked Rob Neyer a question about Chavy today...
heres what he said.
Adam (New Hartford, NY): Why so down on Chavez? I mean hes basically had 2 seasons off. Hes had the surgeries hes needed. Hes now playing. All signs pointing to 120 games.
SportsNation Rob Neyer: (12:50 PM ET ) Gee, a whole 120 games? And how well is he going to play in those 120 games, exactly? Look, I’m on his (and the A’s) side. I want him (and them) to do well. I just don’t think it’s going to happen.

Got some other questions going about him:
tom: (san jose, ca): will eric chavez be the alltime homerun king for a player too never make an all-star team?
SportsNation Rob Neyer: (12:55 PM ET ) Good question, Tom … is he on track for that? He’s still 70 behind Tim Salmon, and I’ll be somewhat shocked if Chavez hits 71 more.
Jeff (Dixon, CA): Chavez has never made an all-star team? Really?
SportsNation Rob Neyer: (1:00 PM ET ) Yeah. Weird, huh?

Not that weird
He always sucked in the first half.

I wouldn't say he always sucked
but he was definitely a second-half player. That explains a lot.

Chavy ready for Opening Day?
so we have one thing in common.
But I certainly won’t make it to 120 games…

Makes sense to keep Crosby
He’s an experienced veteran who plays decent defense, has some pop in the bat and can steal a base – a good “utility” guy. Sure, I’d rather be paying $500,000 a year for him than $5 million, but that can’t be changed. Let Crosby play fairly often as utility guy and hopefully a trade offer will come along when some other team needs an infielder.

Well the dollar figure can be changed by trading him for someone cheaper.

No, it can't.
Because no one is going to trade for him unless we eat a big chunk of the salary. The other 29 teams already had a chance to take over his contract when we put him on waivers a while back.

Also, unless he's hiding someone's father in there
I would dispute that he has pop in his bat.
