Beane on ESPN talking Ballpark
Beane was on Baseball Tonight talking about the new ballpark efforts. He said that as long as they are in the current situation the roster turn overs will have to continue untill a new park is built. He also said that this was the first year that he had heard back from free agents saying they didnt wanna play in an old facility and that ballpark. So heres to hoping something can be worked out soon. Hopefully before our current crop of young players hit free agency. The show will prob be re-aired again tonight at some point if you wanna check it out.

I just caught that
Did he say we are the last team to have one in the works or did I hear that wrong. For the most part he said many of the same things we have said around here. Go AN!!!

Yeah he did mention something like we were one of the last
teams to get a new park.
"Their Triple-A rotation, led by Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, could be better than some big-league rotations; Michael Ynoa is the best Latin American prospect of the decade; 2008 draftees Jemile Weeks and Rashun Dixon bring much-needed tools to an advanced group of hitters." - BaseballProspectus.com

The Marlins are getting one and it’s expected to be built in time for the 2012 season.

Timing smells funny
About the FA old ballpark story- now that Freemon is out.
I could see sluggers being put off playing in a pitcher’s park, but IMO- I think its more about a team being a contender.

I think attendance has a lot to do with it -
That there just isn’t an atmosphere of excitement the way there probably would be in a Fremont/San Jose venue.

I wonder...
Would players would be blackballing the Coliseum if Lew hadn’t broadcasted his negative opinion of it?
by roscoe on Mar 24, 2009 4:40 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably yes
Wolff’s hardcore black balling of it was a fairly recent development. Players have been avoiding staying in and coming to Oakland for far longer. And no amount of talk can change the fact that once the Metrodome is gone that the Coliseum is one of the two worst stadiums left in MLB in a duel for last with Tropicana Field.

Not Likely
most of have played there and have first hand experience. Others have probably had teammates who have played there. I seriously doubt any player would pay much attention to what the owner thinks of the stadium.

You may be right but
I must ask this question: Why is this the first time Billy has heard that reaction from players? What has changed?

how many free agents has beane attempted to sign?
old guys at the end of their careers who are unwanted by most teams, if not every other team (frank thomas, giambi, garciaparra, piazza, mike sweeney), not players in their prime who have other options.
then came furcal, and he had other options, so he went elsewhere.
and how many players are going to actually say that’s the reason they’re choosing another team?
not many players ever come out and say things like that, but furcal did.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense.
By the way, I like your sig line but find it funny that 3 of the Ramones had already died when Beane said it.

one of the Bee Gees had already died too

Or...
There are now only two stadiums in MLB that aren’t either storied or fairly new, or going to be new shortly.
The facilities that the players see, the clubhouses, the weight rooms, etc. Those are muuuuccchhhh nicer in the new parks.

Las Vegas would bite
For a bunch of reasons… small media market, season ticket base is small for a city that thrives on tourism, they would be in a worse situation within 5-10 years.

With the economic downturn
Las Vegas’ growth has slowed dramatically.
Also, building huge cities in the middle of the desert is stupid.

The sad thing is
I live in Vegas now, but basically in the timeframe that it would take for the A’s to move to Las Vegas, I plan on being back in the Bay Area by the end.
Nice grammar, but I’m too tired to backspace.

I truely wish
I could afford a season ticket so I can feel like I’m helping my team out. There sure are a few mighty tempting, nearly affordable ticket options though.

I could feel like the season ticket I’ve had for ten years meant something… truth is these guys don’t care about us little diddly ass season ticket holders unless our last name is CORPORATION

There are
The A’s sent me a two for one season ticket deal the other day on the first deck. Infact I’ve been getting deal emails from them almost daily at this point.

So now... seemingly all of a sudden...
…players don’t want to play here because of the facility.
Granted, the sample size is relatively small, and there is the Furcal thing though one anecdote does not a trend make, but it strikes me as just a tad too coincidental and convenient.
I could prove God statistically. Take the human body alone - the chances that all the functions of an individual would just happen is a statistical monstrosity.

I don't think it's all the sudden
If you have been in the “bowels” of any stadiums you will notice a stark contrast between Oakland’s and everywhere else except those that are about to be replaced (Minnesota/Miami) and those that are revered for their history (Fenway and Wrigley). Oakland’s facilities for players are substandard and increasingly so. While it is probably not top of the list for reasons not to come to Oaktown… it is probably on the list.
