Su Slu has much rotation news

The basic story is as follows:

1. Braden will start Opening Night. he is being placed on a schedule which puts him there-- Eveland is way off that schedule;

2. Duke might be ready by end of first week, meaning there could be only 1 spot available;

3. That spot will go to Cahill or Anderson. Edgar is Gone; no discussion  of Outman.

4. Which means if Duke is not ready-- suffers a setback, for example-- we'll probably see both of the kids in the rotation.

I wish there were more depth-- in terms of more guys doing better than they are-- but this is the outcome I expected several weeks ago. So let's leave all the service time and overwork debate to the side for a while, and hope the kids are all right.

I'm torn

On one hand I want to see the youngsters pitching as much as anyone more on the reason of interest then whether they are ready or not. Let’s face it, they are much more exciting then these non roster invites that only show they can not pitch in the bigs year after year. On the other hand I would rather let schmuckboy43 and donkey13 pitch for a few weeks if it buys us another year with the youngsters in trade. I would never understand sacrificing a full season with top prospects for a few starts from some cheap fodder. Now it goes without saying I have no idea what I am talking about but in my mind it would make sense to buy a few weeks to get the extra time down the road.

I'm scared and excited at the same time.

If you think the A’s are a contender and they’re neck and neck with the Angels, you could argue that a few starts with cheap fodder could cost you the division title. And a full season in Year 7 simply isn’t a very certain proposition. It’s not worth much today.

I still don’t think the A’s are going to be healthy enough or mature enough to win this year, but I’d still want my 10 best available players in the lineup every game.

inside scoop on rotation

I was sharing a root beer float with Billy Beane yesterday — yes, it was one float with two straws — he told me the starting rotaion he was oprdering: Braden, Galleger, Cahill, Anderson and Eveland. They are not going to rush Dush back and figures one of the starters will eliminate themselves by the time Dush is ready. I asked what Geren thought of the plan and BB cracked up at thought that Geren had any say in the matter.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with two attractive straight men sharing a rootbeer float on a warm Arizona afternoon.

anybody have any real insight into why cahill seems to be the favorite among fantasy sites? based on spring training results and the fact that anderson’s already pitched in AAA i’d think he has the edge. any thoughts?

I don't know if I believe it...

But a lot of analysts are thinking that Anderson’s injury (or soreness) is enough to keep him from starting out of AAA. Maybe it’s a conservative analysis based on the A’s injury history.

Swisher is better than Nady in every single aspect of baseball. Why the hell would Girardi (who really might be the worst manager in baseball, and one of the biggest jackasses) go with Nady?

Swish can't hit no more

And i can’t think of a single major league team— well, I’m sure I could come up with a couple— that is a worse fit for him right now than the A’s. First Base? Giambi, Barton, Doolittle, Carter Corner Outfield? Holliday, Cust, Buck, Cunningham. No way he comes here or should.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Ugh

Ok, first of all, Mr. Double Negative – Swisher can, in fact, hit. He was quite possibly the unluckiest hitter in baseball last year. He’s also a better player than Nady.

sure he should

there’s this little thing called money— Doolittle, Buck, Cunningham, Carter, barton will all be fairly cheap for at least 2-3 more years. Swisher is not and will be only if he has no options anywhere else.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait a minute

Allowing for last season’s fluke (and you haven’t argued that point), you’re basically saying Swisher can’t hit because of a 30 point drop in OPS between ‘06 and ’07 and a few spring training at bats? Seriously? I’m sorry, but a 30 point OPS drop is not a sign of “can’t hit.” His TT might be that .836, but .836 is hardly a bad player.

by thejd44 on Mar 24, 2009 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

you is leaping to conclusions, man

I just showed a trend. 2008 is the most recent and by far the most significant. obviously the Yankees are watching much more than a few spring training ABs. I don’t dismiss it as a “fluke”, necessarily.

And I’d say that some combination of Barton and Doolittle— not to mention Buck and/or Cunningham, or Carter— will be better than a declining Swisher within a year or two. So why take the salary on now? makes no sense.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

You understand that Doolittle was basically awful in AA last year?

He had a sub-.700 OPS in 2007, tore up Stockton, and then went back to a sub .700 OPS in Midland.

well, i said...

they— or some combination of they— Barton, Doolittle, Buck, Cunningham, Carter— woud be better than swisher with a year or two— that means 2011, i do believe.

And as for this year, we have a left fielder, Swisher’s best outfield position. He’s not a serious CF candidate, and i do not believe we should retard Buck (and Cunningham to follow) for whatever he could produce, which is not likely to be better than Buck.. Plus there’s the minor issue of his salary, compared to all the young guys. plus we have Giambi and NoMar and barton to cover 1B.

Need any more reasons?? There is simply no room at the inn for the guy.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Buck has done a pretty good job of retarding his own progress

Look, I’ll admit that Swish being more expensive makes it more difficult to argue bringing him back, and I’ll also admit that it was a quasi-joke built largely on sentiment.

But let’s not split hairs— none of the tweener outfield prospects in the high levels of the A’s system has consistently shown that they can hit for prototypical corner OF numbers. And I’m also not keen on pinning my hopes on some 1B prospects that haven’t even smelled the major leagues yet.

Taking a more serious bent than I originally intended to, I’d jump at the chance to add Swisher—at the immediate expense of Buck and Cunningham (keep in mind Holliday is a FA after this season)—if the price was right.

I just remembered I love Eric Chavez.

What are the odds on Nady keeping that job for any more than three weeks? Giardi will have his fill of Nady in less than two, I think. They may have similar power but Swisher gets on base a hell of a lot more and he’s a much better fielder.

Believe it or not, Price headed to minors
Rays looking at the big picture, and want potential ace to get more ‘seasoning’

What’s a guy have to do to make a team these days, anyhow?

Get himself ranked as the No. 1 pitching prospect in baseball? Nope. Apparently, that won’t do it.

Get himself named USA Today’s 2008 Minor League Player of the Year? Nope. That won’t, either.

Hmmm, get picked to win the rookie of the year award by every magazine in America except Better Homes and Gardens? Uh, ’fraid not.

OK, how about marching in to save the game in October that launched his team into the first World Series in franchise history? Sorry. Not quite enough.

All right, well, how ‘bout doing all that stuff and racking up a 1.08 spring ERA? Nah, unbelievably, that’s probably not going to get it done, either.

Not if the guy we’re talking about is David Price, anyway. And not if the team he’s trying to make is the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays haven’t quite yet said that their favorite 23-year-old left-handed phenom is about to be handed a plane ticket to Durham, the Rays’ Triple-A affiliate. Not officially, anyway.

But every indication is that that’s what’s about to happen, probably any day now. And if that isn’t a sign that the Rays obviously have way too much talent and way too much pitching, I don’t know what is.

You have to wonder how many teams in baseball would have the courage to make a decision like this.

but if I were a Rays fan, I would be okay with it as long as the goal was to show teams you might be trading with that you can keep Niemann if you want to — therefore maybe upping his trade value a bit to teams that need starting pitching (Padres, Jays, Nats, etc). Then trade him as soon as you get a decent deal. Niemann has some upside, and you don’t want to just release him.

What outcome are you referring to? Because it sure as hell isn’t the rotation you predicted less than two weeks ago.

Sounds to me like Braden, Gallagher, Duke, and Eveland are going to start, and 1 of AC will get the last spot. If what you’re saying today is correct, neither of the Gonzalezes is starting. So basically, you couldn’t have been more wrong with your previous predictions.

Or did you predict this rotation before you predicted that one? if you’re going to change your predictions every week to cover all possible situations, don’t rub it in when one of your 3000 contradictory predictions turns out correct.

We’re down to Eveland-braden-Gallagher; the two Gonzalezes, and MAC.

I’m betting on a 2-1-2 configuration. One of the first three is either sent down (Gallagher) or dealt; one Gonzalez makes it (probably Edgar); plus Cahill and Anderson.

okay so if the rotation is eveland, braden, edgar, cahill, and anderson, with gallagher sent down or traded, you totally called it. good luck with that.

what's a Gonzalez between friends??

i still got 4 of 5— including both Cahill and Anderson, it seems, partic. after Outman’s disaster tonight. A lot better than most…. And of course you don’t trade Gallagher when Gio is hurt, Duke is hurt, Anderson has forearm tightness, and everyone else is blowing up.

Laugh at me if you wish— but I was much closer to the truth than all of you MAC AAA crowd— or even those who ranked Mazzaro ahead of Anderson and cahill.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude

Current rotation:

Braden
Eveland
Gallagher
Cahill OR Anderson
Duke (who will be flipped into the #1 spot, I’m sure)

5 slots.

Your proposed rotation:

Braden OR Eveland OR Gallagher
Eveland OR Gallagher OR Gallagher
X Gonzalez
Anderson
Cahill

You said that only 2 of EBG would make it. Wrong. All three will. You can’t claim all three when you specifically said that only two of them would make it, with one being sent down or traded. You said a Gonzalez would make it. You were wrong. And then you said that both Cahill and Anderson would make it, which currently is not what you are saying that SuSlu is claiming. So you got 3 of 5 names (when Eveland and Braden and Gallagher were actually all locks for the rotation), and all of your predictions were wrong, and now you’re claiming that you got 4 of 5 right and that you’ve known all along that this is how it would turn out.

then try for accuracy.

If no duke, then it is pretty obvious as of this writing that it will be Braden-Gallagher-Eveland-Cahill-Anderson. OK?? that’s 4— count ’em— out of 5. (I had Edgar and only 2 of the 3 so-called "locks") If Duke is back then there is no comparable because I— and everyone else— was assuming he would not be ready in time for the first week.

“all of your predictions are wrong”??

Wow. I predict both Cahill and Anderson— and maybe are joined by about 10% of this board with the other 90% saying neither of them, or Mazzaro first— and you are ripping me!! Pretty amusing.

Like I said, i was wrong about a Gonzalez. Time will still tell about whether when duke is back Braden-Eveland-Gallagher all stick and one of Anderson-Cahill goes back down. let’s see, OK?? And as for the “E/B/G "were actually all locks for the rotation”— do you know who basically said this was not true? And said it today?? Billy Beane, that’s who. According to SluSlu
When we spoke to GM Billy Beane today about Bob Geren’s contract extension, he mentioned that Dallas Braden is the only starter with a spot sewn up. (He’s not counting Justin Duchscherer. Duchscherer has a spot if he’s ready the first week.) Dana Eveland, Sean Gallagher, Brett Anderson, Trevor Cahill and Josh Outman are all competing for the other three to four spots, depending on Duchscherer’s health.

Linky

We can assume Eveland and Gallagher have the inside track but I’m still surprised they haven’t “sewn up” a spot.

and this is also....

what i have been saying all spring, contrary to those who thought Eveland and gallagher were locks. Now Edgar and Outman may have pitched us into that reality, but BB has— as I and a few others have been saying— had a very open mind about this whole thing. And I would think he is certainly toying with the notion that Cahill and Anderson are superior to at least one of the holdovers and maybe two.

Do you really think Eveland and Gallagher aren't locks?

I don’t really think either has been in doubt all along.

Not according to BB, nico

I think he’s very tempted to put cahill and Anderson in for the duration— that if they pass the first tests— he might move Eveland in a trade when Duke comes back. I’ve said that for weeks now— and this Slusser report certainly doesn’t close the door on that possibility. Gallagher seems to be in fine shape, after two strong outings.

And we’re all still guessing as to when Duke is back and how long he stays in the rotation before being shelved again.

by windyfelix on Mar 24, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would he rid his team of the depth it needs, especially when Duke's so injury prone?

Besides, it’s easy for him to keep one of the starters in AAA. What, exactly, would he trade Eveland for? Another outfielder? Another infielder? Another catcher? Relief pitching? I just don’t see Beane giving up on Eveland while his value isn’t great. What would he get in return?

Can't believe windy is actually arguing this poing...

Gallagher, Braden and Eveland are, indeed, locks for this rotation on opening day (barring an injury, of course). Despite what BB puts out to the public, the only two questions are:

1. Will Duke be ready to pitch in the first week?
2. Who will be #4 or #5? Anderson and Cahill or Cahill or Anderson?

Anyone disagree?

Here are my top 5 pitchers

First pick is a no brainer

Had him for #2 but got sent down to AAA for more seasoning

2 and 3 could go either way- 2 w/ a higher ceiling, 3 more polish

4 is on the Left( one on the right was an non roster invitee that got dropped…)

and this Vet for #5 on Minor League deal

Bobby Crosby = ground-out triple play...

I don't think our staff is ready for this season.

The staff seems to be getting hit pretty good (Maybe it is just tired arms). Looks like the MAC all will be up in July if things do not start turning around.
